Hutchinson House updateThis house, its heritage and the land that surrounds it, have compelled so many to be a part of saving it.

Thanks to the incredible generosity and support of the Hutchinson House Heritage Project, we achieved the first fundraising goal to pay off the $100,000 loan for the purchase of the house and grounds. Research and planning continue in earnest as the effort to restore the historic house builds momentum.

We began a partnership with Charleston’s American College of the Building Arts (ACBA) back in January.

The ACBA Spring Preservation class is completing an assessment that will include recommendations for the stabilization, repair, interpretation, and history of the property.

The ACBA student research will be incorporated into a professional structural and architectural assessment in order for recommendations for repair and restoration to be completed by fall of this year.

Exciting things lie ahead for the Hutchinson House, and none of it would be possible without you!

Mixing it up for environmental education Partnerships for learningWe are so fortunate on Edisto Island to have a wide variety of environmental learning landscapes. Our location in the ACE Basin provides our students with experiences in the creeks, rivers and beach environments as well as the estuaries, marshes and maritime forests.

With such a variety of outdoor learning opportunities, it would be impossible to employ all the expertise we need in one place.

Cultivating partnerships with members of the education staffs of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Coastal Education program and the Edisto Beach State Park have allowed us to supplement and enrich our educational offerings with the experts.

These scientists have a real passion for outdoor education and improving environmental literacy.

A State Park turtle specialist, Leah Schwartzentruber, helped us kick off the year with sea turtles and the impact of plastics on this species. Mid-year found our group at Botany with Bess Kellet and a salt marsh transect study.

DNR biologists Nick Wallover and Lauton Sutley, ended the year with an ACE Basin boat trip and a trawl that brought our study of “Water, Water Everywhere” full circle. It all boils down to a recipe for success as we collaborate to teach students to become stewards of their community’s natural spaces.

Bess Kellett, Botany Bay Plantation WMA Volunteer Coordinator, took the kids down into the salt flats to give them an up close look at the importance of our salt marshes.

An exciting final outing for the year took the kids out to experience the ACE Basin with SCDNR Wildlife Biologist Nick Wallover. The burrfish was one of many fascinating creatures discovered that day. During a visit to Edisto Beach, Leah Schwartzentruber, a State Park turtle specialist, explained how harmful it can be when plastics make their way into our oceans.

Give a gift that lasts

You can help to protect an ever-growing network of lands with foresight and visionary support. We encourage you to consider new ways to make gifts that will have a lasting impact on keeping Edisto Island scenic, natural and unspoiled.

Will you join the Legacy Circle? Here are a few methods that you can use to make a difference today and in the future:

You can name the Land Trust as a beneficiary in your will or living trust. A bequest can be a specific sum, a percentage of your estate, or the remainder of your estate after expenses and gifts to loved ones. Bequests can include cash, securities, real estate, houses, and personal property.

You can leave a legacy by making an insurance-related gift to the Land Trust. You can name EIOLT as

a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or annuity for death proceeds. You can set up the policy so that 100 percent of the benefit comes to us or divide the benefit so that we are one of two or more people or charities benefiting from your thoughtfulness.

The charitable IRA rollover provision allows those aged 70½ or older to make tax-free distributions direct from an IRA to a qualified charity.

If you have already included EIOLT in your will, please let us know so we can include you in the Legacy Circle and thank you during your lifetime.
