With the opportunity to run two successful businesses in beautiful Paynesville, East Gippsland gives Tamara Cook, her husband Chris and their family the best of both worlds.

Now managing both the long-established Bulls Cruisers and the Captain’s Cove resort, Chris also works part-time as a Civil Engineer. “There is a shortage of this skill base here, so there are always extra projects in this field, whilst I enjoy my other business pursuits” he said. Tamara believes that the waterfront location offers all they need for success.

“We’ve tried Perth, Melbourne and Far North Queensland and have found that in East Gippsland there are real opportunities for buying small businesses and doing really well,” she says. “There are plenty of challenges; we’re passionate about our businesses but we know, with three children, it’s not all about work.

“The climate is wonderful and we really enjoy our family time. We love boating and the beaches and snow fields are close by. The kids are happy and we’re happy.

“When you can have that balance it makes you a more effective business owner. We wouldn’t be able to achieve that anywhere else.”

teaching such names as Elizabeth Hurley, Pat Cash and even the British Olympic Rowing team during her career as a Pilates instructor, Catherine Wilks had experienced the world, yet she chose East Gippsland as the place to experience life.

“I have travelled the world during my career; I’ve lived in London, Jakarta and Sydney but I really wanted to live the country life.

“In East Gippsland there is a better quality of life, a great lifestyle and it’s more affordable. Life is less stressful without the crowds and there’s so much more freedom here.

“We love to get out on our boat and go fishing, we go prawning and for walks by the river. It’s such a wonderful lifestyle for kids too; you don’t need to worry so much.”

So after travelling the world, Catherine found her home in East Gippsland, “I would never leave,” she says.

When Nick Wright and his wife Sam traded the hustle and bustle of Sydney’s busy northern beaches for life on the Gippsland Lakes, they discovered that you can enjoy life on the water, without the big city price tag.

“The lifestyle is just amazing,” says Nick who runs a successful café, Fickle Fig, in Paynesville. “While my mates are sitting on the motorway in Sydney heading home on a Friday night, I am dolphin-watching on the Lakes.”

“I grew up on the water and always want to live near the water but here we can afford a house on an acre for the price of a car park in Sydney,” laughs Nick. “In East Gippsland our quality of life has jumped dramatically, you really can trade up your lifestyle.”

“It’s the ability to have a lifestyle that I really enjoy but in a time frame that I just couldn’t have achieved in the city.”

Maureen just can’t keep from smiling about her choice to invest in East Gippsland and start her dream business

Six years ago Maureen Cathcart decided the time was right to achieve a long-held dream. East Gippsland offered an affordable investment opportunity and enabled Maureen to open her successful kitchen and home wares store, House and Gift, in Bairnsdale.

“The business was so busy from the outset that within 8 months of opening we had outgrown our original 70 square metre premises and had moved to our current 300 square metre store.”

A transport hub, Bairnsdale’s location is central not only to East Gippsland but also to Maureen’s broad client base.

“Bairnsdale has all the business services we need; we don’t go out of the area for anything,” says Maureen. “We have regular clients from Armadale and Toorak, Sale, Traralgon, Canberra and the south coast of New South Wales. Our personal service is something you won’t get anywhere else and that’s why our customers keep coming back.”
