October and November collide on the last and the first days of the two months. November 1st is Samhain, or, in Irish, “Summer’s end.” October 31st is celebrated as Halloween, or the eve of the Hallowed day of November 1, All-Saints Day. For the Celts in Ireland and Europe, these two days were amongst the holiest of the year. It was a time when the veil between the world of the living and the dead was at its thinnest, and people were able to cross over from the other side to the land of the living without much disturbance. The harvest was in and the nights were getting darker sooner, causing shadow to cast malevolent figures along the landscape. The stories of dread came to life much more easily in this climate of darkness. In that background, celebrate the Irish holiday by recalling, or meeting, these folks. They are dead sinners, witches, sea monsters and more. First up are the Sluagh. The Sluagh were thought to be dead sinners, some of whom were too mean to be housed in Hell and were not allowed to cross over to Tir na nOg, the land of the forever young. Ac- cording to Irish folklore, these spirits come from the west, flying in groups like flocks of birds, and try to enter a house where someone is dying to take away that per- son’s soul. Some Irish families would keep their west-facing windows shut at all times to keep the Sluagh out of their homes. So, keep your western windows closed during late October and early November. Not scary enough? Well, how about fire spitting monsters? Caorthannach, (Car han-nack), the fire-spitter, thought by some to be the devil’s mother, is a demon that battled St. Patrick when he banished the snakes from Ireland. Patrick stood on the mountain now known as Croagh Patrick and expelled all the serpents and demons into the sea to drown. Caorthannach, however, managed to es- cape. The demon slid down a mountain away from him, but Patrick spotted her and chased her down upon the fastest horse in Ireland. A long pursuit left Patrick thirsty. Caorthannach knew St. Patrick would need water to quench his thirst along the way, so she spit fire as she fled and poisoned every well she passed. Though he was desperately thirsty, he refused to drink from the poisoned wells and prayed for guidance. A well appeared for him to drink from. Patrick eventually made it to the Hawk’s Rock where he waited for Caorthannach. As the demon approached, he jumped out from his hid- ing spot and banished her from Ireland with a single word. The evil fire-spitter drowned in the ocean leaving a swell behind that created the famous Hawk’s Well. Another story is that she swallowed Patrick at Lough Derg, but he prayed and she bled to death. Well, how about Carman, the Celtic witch? Carman is the Celtic goddess of evil magic. She was said to have come from Athens, sent by the Greek gods. This destructive witch roamed around with her three evil sons: Dub (“darkness” in Irish), Dother (“evil”) and Dain (“violence”), de- stroying anything or anyone in their path. Carman put a blight on Ireland’s crops and terrorized the Irish until the Tuatha De Danann, the “peoples of the goddess Danu,” used their magic to fight and de- feat her. Four of the heroes of the Tuatha Dé Danann, Crichinbel, Lug, Bé Chuille and Aoi, challenged Carman and her sons. The sons were forced to leave Ireland and Carman was imprisoned. She died of long- ing and was buried in Wexford among oak trees. Her grave was dug by Bres. The place she was buried was called Carman after her, and the Tuatha Dé Danann are said to have instituted an Óenach Carmán, or Festival of Carmán. Her story is told in a poem of the Metrical Dindshenchas, which states that she died in 600 BCE. Was the Carman too far back in the mists of time? Then how about the Bean Nighe? As the "Washer at the Ford," she wanders near deserted streams where she washes the blood from the grave-clothes of those who are about OCTOBER 6, 2016 6:30 PM MILWAUKEE MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP MEETING Lakefront Brewery - 1872 N. MilwaukeePresident’s Message..................................Ladies and Gentlemen, Shamrock Club

Members and Celtic Friends All,September was another busy month for

the Shamrock Club and our extendedceltic community.

Late August brought in a new Milwau-kee Hurling Champion - Slim McGinn’s,another of the early continuous sponsorsof the league, in a hard fought victory overSilver Spring House. Slim has also been aloyal sponsor of our annual St. Patrick'sDay Parade for several years.

Labor Day weekend was the annualWisconsin Highland Games . . . a BIGshout-out to our celtic brothers and sisters. It was a grand event.

There were several little parties aroundtown for half-way to Saint Patrick's Dayand a wonderful time was had by almostevery one at Turner Hall for the "Taste ofIreland," a venue that features several fineIrish eateries and the specialties they offer. Our own Honorees were invited to attendand the Color Guard Pipes and Drums puton a very nice show.

We also were featured in a promotionalpiece on Channel 58 thanks to MicheleMcCormack, who always brings awinning smile and an Irish spirit to somany of our events.

Speaking of good shows and a freshvenue . . . The Shamrock Club’s Octobermeeting will be a Celtic "O'toberfest" ofsorts.

BuaFriday, November 9, 7:30 pm..................................A Chicago-based quartet composed of

some of America’s most talented youngmusicians, Bua will bring the beauty andpower of their critically acclaimed tradi-tional Irish music to the Irish Cultural andHeritage Center, 2133 W. Wisconsin Ave.,on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

Taking their name from the Irish wordfor victory, the band has performed atmany of the most prestigious festivals inNorth America including a return visit toMilwaukee Irish Fest in August. Each ofthe band members also taught at the 2016Irish Fest Summer School.

Brian Hart’s evocative, award-winningsinging – often in Irish Gaelic – is centralto Bua’s unique sound. In 2002, he be-came the only American to have won thetraditional senior title in singing at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil. He is also anaward-winning sean-nós dancer.

The group’s instrumental “heart,” SeanGavin won the prestigious Seán O’RiadaGold Medal competition in County Cork in2016, the only American to receive the award.

Known for a sophisticated and excitingfiddle style, Devin Shepherd began Suzukiviolin lessons at age 4. At age 12, he re-ceived an Illinois Arts Council MasterGrant to study with famed Irish fiddler LizCarroll.

One of North America’s most soughtafter guitarists, Brian Miller was recentlyawarded a grant from the Minnesota StateArts Board to continue the Lost FortyProject which celebrates and makes ac-cessible century-old field recordings ofMinnesotan traditional songs. The LostForty performed during this year’s Irish Fest.

Tickets for the show are $21 in ad-vance, $25 on concert day and $10 for stu-dents with an ID. To order online, visitwww.ichc.net. Tickets may also beordered by calling (414) 345-8800.

Just for Fun..................................On vacation in Europe, Bob noticed a

marble column in a church in Rome with agolden telephone on it. As a young priestpassed by, Bob asked who the telephonewas for. The priest told him it was a directline to Heaven, and if he’d like to call, itwould be a thousand dollars. Bob wasamazed, but declined the offer.

Throughout Europe Bob kept seeing thesame golden telephone on a marble column. At each, he asked about it and the answerwas always the same: a direct line to Heavenand he could call for a thousand dollars.

Bob finished his tour of Europe with astop in Ireland. He decided to attend Mass ata local village church. When he walked inthe door he noticed the golden telephone, but underneath it there was a sign stating:

“DIRECT LINE TO HEAVEN25 CENTS”

“Father,” he said, “I have been all overEurope and in all the cathedrals I visited,I’ve seen telephones exactly like this onebut the price is always a thousand dollars. Why is it that this one is only 25 cents?”

The priest smiled and said, “Son, you’rein Ireland now. It’s a local call.”

to die. It is said that mnathan nighe (theplural of bean nighe) are the spirits ofwomen who died giving birth and aredoomed to do this work until the day theirlives would have normally ended.

The bean nighe were most associatedwith the western Scottish Islands and ofNorthern Ireland. A bean nighe is de-scribed in some tales as having one nos-tril, one big protruding tooth, webbed feetand long-hanging breasts, and to bedressed in green. If one is careful enoughwhen approaching, three questions may beanswered by the Bean Nighe, but onlyafter three questions have been answeredfirst.

A mortal who is bold enough to sneakup to her while she is washing and suckher breast can claim to be her foster child. The mortal can then gain a wish from her.If a mortal passing by asks politely, shewill tell the names of the chosen that aregoing to die. While generally appearing asa hag, she can also manifest as a beautifulyoung woman when it suits her.

Finally, we come to the Kelpie. It pri-marily lived in Scotland, but was alsoknown to the Irish. The kelpie is a mon-ster right out of Celtic myth. The creaturecan take on multiple shapes, but usually itappears in the form of a horse. The kelpiegalloped around Ireland, looking like alost pony, attempting to trick women andchildren into riding on it. But the strangething about this pony is that its manewould always be dripping with water. If awoman hopped on, the monster wouldthen run into the water, drowning its vic-tim, and then would take her to its lair toeat her. The Irish demon would sometimestransform into a handsome man to lurewomen to its trap, but a telltale sign that itwas a kelpie was if that “man” had kelp inits hair.

So, try not to date men with kelp-filledhair, washer women on the sides ofstreams, ancient Greek witches withmalevolent sons, fire-spitting women whowould fight patron saints, or flocks of fly-ing sinners this month. They may addmore drama to your life than you wouldwish.
