ooja International's forte is
reproduction of antique
range of furniture and even
new furniture is given that
treatment. There is demand
for such furniture; admitted-
ly it cannot be manufactured in large volumes. While
carrying out exports fulfilling its orders the compa-
ny also supplies to local exporters. The reason, the
company maintains is that everyone is not proficient
enough to undertake this kind of work. There is a
market in the Gulf countries and Europe, a small
volume in South Africa and the United States of
America.
It is easier to refurbish old products, such as doors
and windows, reclaimed from houses that are demol-
ished for newer construction. This old wood, sea-
soned naturally over the years, needs very little
attention other than good polish. These can be used
in combination with several products such as shut-
ters for wardrobes or sideboards. In fact, some of
these refurbished large doors are in demand from
high-end hotels or interior decoration of villas and
farmhouses of the well-heeled.

he skills acquired in

indeed, a labour intensive
work. The products man-

for use in kitchen along with a few for garden out-
doors also. The finish is given accordingly, depending
upon whether the product is to be made weather-
proof or rustproof.
The designs, of course, change every season, but
not its utility value. We are always open to sugges-
tions provided by the buyers when the demand is

our decades into manufactur-
ing handicrafts, Prakash
Handicrafts has now diversi-
fied into furniture. There is a
special appeal for Indian
handicrafts in the world and
its popularity is growing. The company manufac-
tures certain products on specific demands from the
buyers.
It manufactures wooden and steel furniture,
again aimed at Western markets. Bedroom furniture,
for example, is complimented by accessories that
match the main product. Likewise even its steel fur-
niture has similar products complimenting one
another. The steel furniture, in fact, has a Colonial
touch. Though its products are well-accepted in the
western parts of European Union, Saudi Arabia is
its biggest market.
Thus far, Prakash Handicrafts has not partici-
pated in any international exhibition but plans to do
so from this year. Meanwhile, the company plans to
set up a large retail outlet and believes its location is
its main strength. Its products should be accessible
to domestic buyers too, believes Prakash Chandra
Modi.

rince Art Exporter manufactures
a wide range of products from
furniture to gift items and every-
thing in between. In manufactur-
ing furniture, of course, the
exporter’s speciality is carving
that gives an antique look. The products have a wide
appeal in the countries of the Middle East as well as
Spain and a few Scandinavian countries. In fact,
South Africa, Turkey and even Sri Lanka have
shown considerable interest in such types of furni-
ture. The designs preferred by buyers in these coun-
tries differ so a lot of customisation as buyer’s
demands have to be undertaken. Other accessories
like side tables, chairs, centre tables are also cus-
tomised.
The manufacturer also recycles wood, mostly
taken out of old villas or big, old houses and
redesigns to make furniture. There is also demand
for large doors and door frames that have an antique
look. These are mostly used by hotels to provide a
royal touch to their interiors.
The company’s design team creates fascinating
objects from waste wood, which are primarily deco-
rative or for gifting.

It all started with textiles, and
then moved on to furniture. Priti
International uses raw material
which can be recycled. In its
endeavour and efforts to propa-
gate environmental concerns, it
takes part in fairs and exhibitions as often as possi-
ble to send the strong message:environment comes
first and our greed last. Their message seems to be
sinking in and now they have a slew of clients
demanding only durables and utility products manu-
factured from recycled materials. Even the wood
used for making furniture comes from broken ships
and boats.
The husband-wife duo designs products and new
designs emerge every quarter, i.e. before taking part
in fairs and exhibitions. It surely needs imagination
to make utility and home furnishing products from
grain sacks or discarded textiles without compromis-
ing on the quality. As a result, at each fair or exhibi-
tion, the company introduces a fresh theme for
which buyers wait expectedly.
While the Western world is concerned about
environment and uses recycled material, the compa-
ny regrets that this thought has not yet percolated in
our own countrymen. No wonder then that Priti
International is 100 per cent export-oriented unit,
naturally.

ajasthan Arts & Crafts House was
one of the five companies in Jodh-
pur marketing handicraft items
four decades ago. At that time
handicraft items were not market-
ed in an organised format and this
helped Sunil Gupta to identify craftsmen around
Jodhpur and neighbouring districts. Today, that
search has revived traditional art forms.
The company was into antiques as well but sup-
plies dwindled with each passing year. It was then
that Sunil Gupta realised that reproduction of
antiques, true to style in every aspect, was equally
appreciated and sought after. Starting with small
items, the company has now moved on to manufac-
ture larger products like book shelves, kitchen
shelves, jewellery boxes and wardrobes with shutters
which have decorative inlay work, a speciality of the
area. The unit also produces large doors in crafted
wood or with inlay which has found popularity in
Germany, Spain, Portugal and a few Scandinavian
countries.
In the furniture segment, Rajasthan Arts &
Crafts House specialises is handcrafted products.
Though the demand for such products is limited,
they have become poplar with a niche segment of
consumers.

teel and wrought iron products
are our speciality. Furniture
made out of steel or wrought iron
is in great demand in countries
like Italy, Germany and Japan.
The reason, apart from quality, is
intricate craftsmanship.Jodhpur is always known for
wrought iron furniture. The furniture is not confined
to outdoors use only, we do for interiors too.
Royal Arts has been specialising in wrought iron
and steel furniture for a long time. Though these are
basically meant for outdoors, a few designs created
by G R Jain have made them fit for indoor use as
well. The wrought iron gazebos, for example, are
extremely popular in Italy, Germany, Spain, and a
few other European countries. Though these gazebos
are mostly set up in public parks, the rich and
famous also use them to embellish their vast, mani-
cured lawns.
The indoor furniture, manufactured by Royal, is
slightly different: their designs vary and they are
lighter in weight. In addition, Royal also makes
household utility items such as candlestands and
planters. It has been manufacturing certain items
the styles of which are from the Victorian era. These
lamps, for example, use electric bulbs instead of
wicks, but they are popular, thanks to their antique
looks. Royal's design team constantly looks for new
designs always keeping in mind the preferences of
buyers.

Utmost care is taken to ensure quality in pro-

he company’s forte is solid
wood furniture marketed exclu-
sively in the United States of
America. The entire process of
production, from seasoning to
the finished product, is done
under one roof. State-of-the-art machines are used to
manufacture the products which in turn assures
accuracy in measurement and, more importantly,
the quantum of wastage is minimal. The advantage
of using modern machines is that the final product is
perfect.
The final touch, of course, is done with paint,
varnish or lacquer. It requires less human effort in
bringing out the gloss. The company's clients prefer
clean, straight-line looks.
Sethia Handicrafts Pvt. Ltd. has also appointed
a German furniture designer to create designs exclu-
sively for its European market. They are confident
that the design changes will not be too different to
adopt. Also, by introducing these subtle changes, the
final product would not look like mass produced
products. The products aim to occupy a niche.

nnovation and quality ought to
be uppermost in manufacturing
artefacts. This is what has been
put into practice by Vinod
Johari and his Shekawati Art
Exports while manufacturing
furniture, handcrafted products or utility items. The
raw material that the company uses is qualitatively
upgraded each year. Manufacturing contemporary
furniture and accessories has been Shekawati Art
Exports’ forte.
The company’s traditional markets for furniture
have been the USA and European countries since
buyers from these countries opt for solid wood furni-
ture rather than veneers. Having established its
brand image in these two markets, Shekawati Art
Exports is planning to diversify to other markets in
Asia and Africa. Vinod Johari participates in exposi-
tions, both overseas and domestic. Reason: buyers
like to touch the furniture, feel its texture as mere
brochures or websites do not portray the quality of
furniture.

eral variations. As per them, it is better
to have limited portfolio and concen-
trate on the products to achieve quality
and economies of scale so that end-

They are extremely conscious of the environ-
mental issues and compliances. A sample test is con-
ducted on each batch, before exporting it, by an
independent verification agency for compliances
such as non-toxic and lead-free material being used.
This information is then enclosed with the product
packaging for the reference of the end-users. Even
the packaging material is tested for similar compli-
ances. Each package contains installation instruc-
tion along with the ‘do’s & don’ts’.
Orders for its products are received through a
product catalogue of the company and the products
are then shipped directly to the customers without

benefited since the entire procedure is devoid of mid-

tarline Overseas manufactures
very unique artefacts using bone
and horn pieces and embossed
metal sheet cladding over furni-
ture. Though some would say it
was an old art form but credit
does go to them for reviving this art form and bring-
ing it to the notice of international audience. Manu-
facturing them is a painstaking process comprising
several hours and days of labour and is also quite
expensive.
Likewise, embossing metal sheets, mostly brass
and bronze, needs specially designed dies and since
no design is repeated a fresh set of dies is prepared
when the design changes. Starline Overseas are con-
fident that none of their designs could ever be copied
as it would require creating similar dies that costs a
lot.
Their products are meant for niche markets and
for connoisseurs alone. The designs are never repeat-
ed so that the buyer knows there will not be another
object with similar design with other person. There
is a feeling exclusivity amongst buyers.

Keenly aware of environ-

Keeping in mind the globe consciousness about
the harmful effects of environmental degradation,

gift items from recycled wood.
Some buyers from European countries insist on
furniture from recycled wood.
Old wood has a natural seasoning and working
with them is quite simple. Carvings on old wood
have a truly special effect. Suncity Art Exporter
reproduces old, traditional Rajasthani designs in
carvings that have a special appeal in Gulf countries.

arving on stone and marble is an
ancient tradition in the country.
Here Rajasthan gains an edge as it is
home to good quality marble and
naturally skilled artisans who have
achieved proficiency through cen-

The company started work on aluminium casting
and gradually shifted its energies to sheet metal and
later on to stone and marble. Though its main produc-
tion centre is close to marble mines, the entire coordi-
nation is done at Jodhpur. No product is too small or
too big in company's view. It has manufactured eight
metre-wide circular water fountain for an Italian client
alongside several small marble statues, both for indoor
and outdoor use.
The major market for marble products is Europe,
Italy being the largest importer while the United King-
dom clients prefer red stone products. Gazebos on

Thar Handicrafts’ main prod-
ucts are manufactured from
wood and metal, mainly iron.
The artisans are excellent in
creating fascinating, intri-
cately carved products and
have, in a way, revived traditional manufacturing
techniques. Most of these products have a good mar-
ket in Western countries.
Thar’s in-house design team keep experimenting
with designs — always keeping in mind what appeals
to Western buyers. Since most of the Asian countries
have a strong handicrafts’ presence in the interna-
tional markets, the products created by Thar are
innovative to withstand the competition. Perhaps,
what is most important is that designs are not
repeated year after year. The manufacturing tech-
nique is traditional and even the paints — vegetable
paints —that are used are those that have been used
over years.
The producer’s traditional foreign markets are
Australia, European countries and the USA, but
Thar Handicrafts is keen on expanding its presence
in other countries as well since there is a lot of scope
for Indian handcrafted products.

har International, though a
late entrant in the business of
manufacturing wooden furni-
ture, holds no qualms in com-
peting with some of the estab-
lished players in this field. Its
products and style, both are aimed at the Western
markets.
Thar International’s speciality is straight-line
wooden furniture which provides it the freedom to
manufacture quality furniture. It has its own design
department that comes out with simple yet elegant
styles. However, sometimes buyers do suggest some
modifications in designs, which are well incorporated
by the company. The company, under strict supervi-
sion, has outsourced seasoning of wood for economi-
cal reasons.
There is place for everyone in this vast market and
Jodhpur's wooden furniture is widely accepted in the
Western markets for its designs, quality and compli-
ances. The company does take part in fairs and exhi-
bitions and that exposure gives it a fair idea of mar-
ket requirements since it plans almost six months in
advance.

he company is concentrating
its energies to manufacture
gift items only. The products
are made of wood, metal and
glass or combination of all
these. Though the items of
utility are used daily, the decorative ones — be they
wall hangings or on-table displays — need to have a
lasting impression.
The Barun International conducted market
research to understand peoples’ preferences from
each country in Europe, rather than plunging
headlong, since the target markets were in
Europe. This helped the company to fine-tune the
products, the colours, sizes and kind of raw mate-
rial to be used.
Participating in international fairs and exhibi-
tions has helped Raju understand preferences and
the changes likely to happen the next season. The
company’s products are sold in France, Germany,
Spain, a few East European countries and South
Africa. The company is planning to enlarge and
consolidate its market share in countries where its
presence exists before looking at newer markets.

Traditional Handicrafts
Centre has been in the
handicraft business for
the past 32 years and
has done well to pro-
mote and popularise
Rajasthan's handicraft to the outside world. Some of
the items like engraved boxes are coming back into
vogue.
Similarly, large doors, with lots of engraving, fix-
tures and metal embellishments are sought after by
business houses, hotels, farm houses and villas to
enhance their interior décor. These fixtures provide
royal touches to the décor. The company also makes
accessories that complement these fixtures.
Rajasthan is known for its stone work as well as
good quality marble. The marble is used for making
several kinds of products but the most preferred are
water tanks and fountains. Mahendra Gupta designs
water tanks and fountains both for indoors and out-
doors. Again such products have found ready buyers
from corporate circles as well as individuals all of
who are based abroad.
