I lay on the ground shooting skywards. The fisheye lens wrapped thesurrounding buildings within its frame coverage.

Taken and published with the permission of my photography students, weexperimented with this group shot. I call this the “circle of life”. I jokedwith my students that this picture will be better off if all of us were in sometribal costumes with feathers on our head.

I was then building up my range of DX lensesand I pondered whether to purchase this lens ornot. I also wondered whether I should invest ina lens which will give distortion. I borrowed onefrom my friend and tried it for a week. I toldmyself, “Wow, wow, wow! I must get this lens.”
Even though I possess the 12-24mm DX lenses, the 10.5mm fisheye is a good complement as ithas a wider coverage than the 12mm. Oh yes, just to clear the myth of focal length, there is adifference between 10.5mm fisheye and asuperwide angle 10mm lens. Difference being, for a normal super wide angle 10mm lens, it hasless angle coverage than the 10.5mm fisheyelens. We also do not experience the barreldistortion as seen in the 10.5mm fisheye lens.
According to Wikipedia, the apparent effect ofthe fisheye lens is that of an image being mappedaround a . use this type of distortion as a wayto map an infinitely wide object plane into a finiteimage area, hence the 10.5mm fisheye lens canprovide more coverage than a normal super wideangle 10mm lens. Hence, the word “fisheye” onthe lens make it a whole lot of difference.Certainly, in very tight areas, the fisheye lenshelps to cover most of the scene, especially intight confined areas or small alleys. At the sametime, with a focal length of 10.5mm, one caneasily minimize camera shake since the minimum
shutter speed to minimize camera shake is 1/10of a second in this case. (The minimum shutterspeed to minimize camera shake is 1/focal length.)This will mean that shooting with this lens in lowlight conditions or even night photographywithout a tripod is not impossible with the helpof a higher ISO.
Some tips:
• It is important to note the degree of distortionwhen you ti lt the camera upwards anddownwards.
• Usually, the central area of the frame has lessdistortion, hence try to avoid placing your mainsubjects outside the central area of theviewfinder.
• This lens does not allow the use of a UV or
skylight filter to protect the lens, hence specialcare is needed to avoid grease or thumb printson the lens. Do standby a lens pen or lenstissue. But the wonderful angle which this lensprovides is worth the effort.
The fisheye lens is versatile. Used adequately, itcan even be used for shooting architecture, landscape, portrait and daily scenes. With thetips above in mind as well as the case studiesbelow, enjoy yourself in playing with thedistortion.

10.5MMFISHEYE
[ ]“Lens distortion…desirable or unwanted?
I love it though!”
When I first started photography with film in thegood old days, I did hear of this lens call the16mm fisheye. In those days, this is a veryexpensive lens which I can barely afford as astudent. I gave it a miss. Now into the digital era,I continue to use the Nikon system and this lenscame into my sight again in the form of a moreaffordable 10.5mm.
In this eleventh part of a series oftechniques, Steven Yee shall sharewith you tips on using the Nikon
10.5mm fisheye lens. A travelphotographer and photographyinstructor, Steven Yee conducts

Do take note of the distortionwhen you tilt the cameraupwards and downwards. Ateye level, barrel distortion isseen in region off the centre ofthe image. When the camera istilted upwards or downwards, the horizon became distorted. If used creatively, this sort ofdistortion can sometimes leadto some stunning shots.
Shot at the Singapore River, trying out this shot with a portrait andlandscape orientation can yield very different visual effect. But do takenote in keeping your balancing act, as looking at the distorted imagethrough the view finder can at times make you lose your foothold.

The below 3 pictures are taken with 3 different focal lengths. The 18mm focal length is often available in most of Nikon kit lenses. When the 12mm lens is used, it shows more coverage than the 18mm
focal length. The 10.5mm fisheye reveals more of the surroundingamidst the lens barrel distortion, which can sometime make the picture
look different from an ordinary undistorted shot.

Good use of the fisheye lens can also yield good effectfor architectural shots. The old stairways and the rooflooked appealing. While I enjoy the process ofcontrolling the distortion, I also have to take note ofmaintaining the symmetry.

to choose from, which made many serious
amateurs spoilt for choice. Many wonder which
lenses are good for travel photography.
My various encounters in travel photography
assignments and personal trip made me realise
the importance of knowing your objective. Before
embarking on any trip, I do research by looking
at previously taken images and plan my trip.
I have my checklist of categories of things to
cover so that I do not miss out anything. In a
way, I am taking pictures to add to my stock
library of images which I can use one day.
Another important thing I realise is the need to
travel light and yet adequately equipped. It is
good to have your workflow in terms of what
lenses to use for various situations. For me, I have
my “3 treasures” in my small camera bag.
• Nikon 10.5mm fisheye
• Nikon 12-24mm
• Nikon 18-200mm VR
So far, I have no problem with these 3 lenses for
most of my travel assignments. Many will be
shocked by the picture below which show how
“mobile” I can be and yet these equipment allows
me to cover a wide range of subjects. This Nikon
camera bag has since become my favourite camera
bag. It can contain a Nikon D300 and my
“3 treasures”.
The 18-200mm VR is good for genera l
photography, which can include portraits,
landscape, still life, action and other general
scenes. The 12-24mm is good for shooting
interiors, architecture, narrow alleys etc. The
10.5mm fisheye is useful if you need an even
wider coverage of a scene. The distortion can be
utilised in a creative manner. While some may
lament that the 12-24mm may create distortion,
in my opinion, it is all about how we go about
doing “distortion control” by managing how we
tilt our camera.
Certainly, backup is important especially if you
are going to some places where there are
numerous photography opportunities. My D2X
is now my backup camera and the 18-70mm
lenses are my backup lenses, both of them are
usually packed neatly in my luggage. So far, I find
the D300 an excellent camera to work with. It
performed a lmost as wel l as the D2X.
Recently, I was in Perth conducting a photography
workshop. The airport is very strict with the carry-
on board weight limit. Since this is not a
photography assignment, I brought only the D300
and my “3 treasures” which made me survive the
screening process at the airport. My short stint
there did not allow me to travel to exotic places
like the Pinnacles, but staying at the South Perth
Esplanade and driving around the King’s Park can
get some interesting decent shots.

FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - ALBERT LIM K S FEATURED PHOTOGRAPHER - ALBERT LIM K S
Albert Lim KS is a renowned Singapore-basedphotographer who has honed his craft over25 years. He is the photographer of choice formany leading architects and developers inSoutheast Asia.
His pictures have been published in leadinginternational architectural magazines includinga+u (Japan), d+a (Singapore), Architectural Review(UK), Architecture Australia, MIMAR, SingaporeInstitute of Architects Journal, World Architecture(UK), Space (S ingapore) and Monument(Australia). He has also been a photographer ofrecord for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture(AKAA) and his photographs have featuredin exhibitions at the Venice Biennale and AedesEast Berlin.
In the early days he shot everything. After winningthe Kodak Singapore Photo Competition in 1985,he goes on to represent Singapore in the HongKong Dragon Boat photo competition andtriumphantly won the overall grand prize. In 1986he took plunge and became a freelancephotographer. He is later appointed the officialphotographer for Miss Universe Pageant 1987.And in both year 1987 & 1988, he receivedacclamations from Singapore Tourism Board forBest Photo in the Tourism Awards. His big breakin architectural photography came in 1988 whenhe was invited by Lena Lim of Select Publishingto illustrate the book Innovative Architecture ofSingapore.
These early experiences have all influenced theway he looks at architecture. He identifies theunderlying structure and unlike some otherphotographers who take half a day to set up andlight a single picture, using natural light, heuncannily identifies the angles and captures theimmediacy of an object and the transmutingeffect of light on space. His most recent workalso makes sensuous connections with landscapeand topography. His studio work is carried outin a renovated shop house in Koon Seng Road, designed by Richard Ho Architects, which wonan SIA Award in 1996.
In addition to his work with Singapore andMalaysian based architects such as Mok Wei Wei,Chan Soo Khian, Tang Guan Bee, Kerry Hill,WOHA, Ernesto Bedmar, Wooi Lok Kuang, TayKheng Soon, Lim Teng Ngiom, Tan Kok Hiangand Wil l iam Lim Siew Wai he has beencommissioned by several international architectsincluding Philip Johnson, Ken Yeang, RichardMeier, Kenzo Tange, IM Pei, Gwathamy Seigaland Moshe Safdie and has worked in China,Indonesia (Bali), India, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia,Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore.
