Well, it has been a pretty exciting couple of months for everyone with the National event in Las Vegas and getting prepared for the Howey Mission Inn Event. To add to the excitement there has been a change of date and format for the upcoming 2019 Regional Event that is still scheduled for Lakeland. We have moved the date to Feb. 21st-23rd, 2019, and have joined with another successful event with Carlisle Events. The addition of the Florida Chapter Regional Event with the ongoing Carlisle Autofest will only add to a very well attended event. The Carlisle Autofest features two car shows, special Corvette Corral, excellent vending options, very good car auction for the hobbyist and investor, car corral and a fun filled weekend for all auto enthusiasts. This will give everyone a lot more car related things to do.

The NCRS Regional will be located in Hangar D only and the Flight Judging and other NCRS activities will take place there as well. Our vendors will now go over to Carlisle Events to add to a large slate of vendors already participating in the Carlisle event and they will have a Corvette only vending area.

The committee who has been working on the changeover is Coach Bucheister, Paul Schwack, Tyler Townsley and myself. We are now busy trying to get cooperating hotels and to make many other changes to accommodate everyone with a positive experience. Thank you to the committee members for their help.

Why the changeover? It has become more obvious and necessary as the labor pool for doing events diminishes

As usual there are always certain items that always get me “fizzed up” and the one that always comes to the forefront is the awards banquet. Every year we go to great pains to have an awards banquet at the end of the meet and we have to make sure we have provisions made for everyone, only to have a lot of participants not show up to receive their awards. This comes at considerable expense to the chapter for unused meals paid for each year to make sure everyone had a seat and these very same people who do not show up have not paid to have their awards mailed out or purchased a banquet ticket. This causes a lot of after the event activity sending awards to self-interested individuals who need to take responsibility for their own actions. I am strongly considering a different approach next year that will not only get the awards properly disseminated and handed personally to each participant but will also increase the participation of the members in attendance to participate in the process and quit wasting chapter resources.

There was a positive side to the banquet and that was all who did attend were properly recognized for their achievements and we had in attendance for the first time three past Presidents, Keith Kibbe, Bill Clupper and Vinnie Peters that I can’t thank enough for their participation. Also in attendance we had our past director John Ballard and our new director Mike Sams with their wives to support the function and we thank them for their past and present interest in the chapter.

We have an upcoming May 3nd new event that will be held in Homosassa Springs and it will be the 1st time offered in this area. This will be a judged event and will be a limited number of cars with preference given first to Chapter members and then to other NCRS members. John Bucheister is the meet chairman and volunteered to do this event to create another judging opportunity for chapter members that we felt could be supported with qualified judges.

I would like to also take time to remember a good friend

and the age of our members is causing our labor pool to decrease. The decision became to either shutting the event down or combine with another successful event, which is what we have chosen to do. We feel this will benefit everyone in the long run and take a lot of the labor and financial pressure away and at the same time make it a larger event for all car people to enjoy. The other problem we are all seeing is the hobby is not enjoying the benefits of the great system NCRS has in place and far fewer people are restoring and showing their cars at these events. As much as we all would like to see younger people jump into the hobby, it just isn’t happening and this is not just in Corvettes. This common theme runs in every car club, organization, collector circles and many other venues. Bottom line is we have to create partnerships with other shows that make people want to attend and hopefully this change will be the right direction for us. In seeing some of the recent comments, I have to go along with one of our English members, who came with a group to Lakeland last year and thoroughly enjoyed himself. He said, “Your enjoyment and fun is what you make of it,” which is well said and should be obvious to us all. Thanks to everyone and congratulations to our Florida Chapter members who received awards at the National Convention. See you at the Howey/ Mission Inn Event.

Several Florida Chapter members were in attendance at this year's NCRS National Convention and received awards. Paul Schwack received a Dave Hill Mark of Excellence Award and the longest Trailered Car Award; Joe Wick received a Master Judge Red Hat; Richard Lomax was awarded a Master Judge 400 Level Award and Ed Nieves received a Master Judge Red Hat. There were also many unique cars on display.

Eric Jackson displayed his two ZR1 prototype cars. One is a 1989 and the other is a 1990. The South Point Casino hotel was a great place. Plenty of restaurants to choose from and the room rate was very affordable and of course, a fabulous casino for those who wanted to test their luck. Once again the NCRS was able to provide us with a great national convention. Special thanks to all the volunteers who made this event possible and special.

Editor’s Notes Hello everyone, I hope all of you are doing fine and are enjoying the summer time. For some of you, it's the best time of the year to drive our Corvettes, but here in beautiful Miami, Florida it's the rainy season, so it tends to rain almost every day. Well, at least it's good for the grass. It's been a busy NCRS season for me. I have had the opportunity to travel to several regional meets and just got back from our National Convention. I can't say enough about how nice the convention was. The South Point Casino Hotel was very pleasurable and it had plenty of restaurants to choose from. Margie and I took in some sightseeing time and visited the Las Vegas strip and downtown. We also participated in one of the tours and went to the Grand Canyon. Special thanks to Tom Barr and the Southern Arizona Chapter for organizing an excellent event. Everything went really smooth (at least from my perspective) and there were some awesome cars being judged. I took plenty of pictures for the Fuel Line.

On the home front, we have new dates for the Florida Winter Regional Meet. I have to admit that it's been a rollercoaster with this event. I'm staying optimistic that everything will work out and we can get the Florida Regional situated once again. I anticipate that combining the Regional with Carlisle will at least give things a different appeal. It's important that we all pull together and assist where we can so we can present well. In closing, I'd like to congratulate all the chapter members that received awards at the National Convention. Well Done!

presentation will take place at the end of judging. If you need the names of hotels in the area, send me an email and I will forward to you the list that will appear in the Drive Line.

Possible future events in late April or May, is a road tour to the Auto Museum in Tallahassee. A cookout for everyone making the trip, at long time chapter member J.C. Osteen's farm, is also in the works. Details for this will be finalized after the Regional.

As time permits, Paul and I will be working on a two-day judging school that will be worth five judging points. This event must be approved by the national judging chairman before we can schedule it. This will hopefully be scheduled sometime in late spring of 2019.

With many activities in the works and excellent volunteers, it is safe to say that the NCRS Florida Chapter is flourishing.

With the successful spring Chapter Meet at Riverview in the books, the next event on the calendar is Howey-in-the-Hills. This long time event at Howey has become a staple of the Florida Chapter. The venue is excellent, good food in the restaurant and always an enjoyable time.

Hopefully again this year our members will turn out and support another successful chapter judging opportunity. Also of some interest and much discussion, is the future of the 41st Sun-n-Fun Regional held in Lakeland.

Due to many complaints from some in the NCRS (not FL Chapter members), we requested a date change to late January. By the time the National Board approved the change, the dates were no longer available. Therefore, the event was canceled.

Upon receiving this news, I received a phone call from Dave Ewan, National Events Chairman and V.P of the N.C.R.S., to discuss other options to continue the Regional. His comment was, "We really want to come to Florida." This request was quickly relayed to our Chairman, Ed Augustine. He has been in contact with both Carlisle Productions and Sun-n-Fun. Both have been receptive to the idea of holding our event at the February Carlisle Flee Market and Car Auction. At present, Ed, Paul and I, are working on the details for February 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 2019.

Also for this Regional, we will be requesting that Dave Brigham approve Mike Hooker's excellent presentation, "Common Errors on Restored Cars, Distinguishing Repro from Original Parts" for a judging school session with appropriate points awarded.

What I can tell you about the Regional, there will not be a host hotel or an awards banquet. The awards

Ed Augustine awards Brian Fox a Top Flight for his 1962.

Three years ago car restorers Bill Connell and Joel Lauman got a lead on a rare 1957 Corvette that was parked inside a barn on a pig farm outside of Trenton, Ohio. The two were familiar with the history of the car and its original owner Bill Howe, a local car dealer who raced the car in 1957. While Connell was convinced that this car was a true airbox Corvette, it wasn’t until they were able to make the deal and bring the partially disassembled car back to the shop where upon further inspection, it turned out to be the first airbox Corvette produced by Chevrolet. Before we get into the details of what makes an airbox Corvette so rare, let’s go back to 1957 when small town Chevy dealer Bill Howe first got the Corvette. The story goes that Bill and a friend flew from Ohio to the Corvette factory in St. Louis where they picked it up on May 16, 1957. They then drove the car straight through back to Middletown, Ohio. They stopped for a couple of hours of sleep and then they drove through the night to Cumberland, Maryland where they arrived just in time to compete in an amateur SCCA event against some of the best known racers of the day. In the end, Bill Howe and his number “4007″ Corvette came in third place. Fast forward to present time. As Bill and Joel began work on the Corvette, they brought in noted Corvette historian and Chevy V8 fuel-injection expert Ken Kayser who spent two days researching the Corvette, upon which he proclaimed that the 1957 Corvette was indeed an original airbox Corvette and more importantly, was the pilot car from which only 43 were produced.

So what is an airbox Corvette? I had never heard the term before so I posed my question to the Corvette Forum’s C1-C2 section where the resident expert on airbox Corvettes “DZAUTO” schooled me on the following:

All fuel injected 57 Vettes have an air cleaner attached directly to the air meter. Fuel injection units do not like heat, and all of the 57 FI engines (except 43) drew in hot air coming directly from the HOT engine compartment. The 43 Fuel Injected cars which were built with an “Airbox” in 1957 had a somewhat crude, practically hand laid up, fiberglass duct work attached to the left inner fender and a hole was cut into the left side of the radiator support to allow air into the duct work. All of these 43 cars were built with heavy duty everything (translate factory built race car), brakes, suspension, special steering, NO radio, NO heater, wide

wheels, tachometer mounted (clamped) on the steering column, fuel injection, HD shocks and that about covers it. Somewhere along the line, the term “Airbox” was tagged to these 43 cars, and it stuck.

Finally, there is a bit of a mystery surrounding the airbox option. For many years the option was known as RPO 579E and in fact The Corvette Black Book shows that 43 Corvettes had the 283 ci FI engine option at an additional cost of $726.30. However in Ken Kayser’s book entitled The History of GM’s Ramjet Fuel Injection on the Chevrolet V-8 and its Corvette Racing Pedigree, he states that the real airbox option was actually 579D, an RPO not listed in the Black Book. Corvette Forum’s DZAUTO has read Kayser’s book and says the author seems to have a pretty convincing argument based on the research of GM’s archives on the subject.

Regardless of the airbox option’s RPO codes and how many may have been produced, what’s worth remembering about this story is the fact that an ultra rare Corvette with a unique racing history was found partially disassembled in a barn and was brought back to life by two guys with a passion for both Corvettes and local automotive history.

Congratulations to Florida NCRS member and judging administrator Paul Schwack, for earning a Dave Hill Mark of Excellence Award with his 1996 Collector Edition Corvette at the 2018 NCRS National Convention. To achieve this coveted award, an owner must attain a judging score of at least 97% out of 100 based on an original standard at a National or Regional NCRS event; as well as present the car for a rigorous performance test of all vehicle mechanical components an functions, all of which must operate as those of a new car, without a single failure. The car must again score at least 97% at a National NCRS Convention, to receive the Hill Award. Paul's car scored an impressive 99.1.

1990 to 1996 Dash Panel Trim Pieces Dash Top Pad (90-96)

The dash top pad of the later style C4 Corvettes carried two designs. 1990-1993 and 1994-1996. As mentioned above, the major visual difference being the addition of the passenger side airbag in 1994. However, the design of the dash overall is very different between these year ranges. The 1990-1993 dash top pads are a much larger piece that wraps completely around the top and bottom of the passenger side of the dash. The passenger side carpeted section (color matched to the interior) of the 1990-1993 dashes is part of the dash top pad and is not able to be separated. (The carpet is also glued to the dash and is extremely difficult to remove cleanly) This large design makes this piece more difficult to remove and much more expensive to ship to customers needing a replacement.

The 1994-1996 dash tops are different from the 90-93 versions as they are only a dash top pad. They do not wrap around to include the lower part of the dash on the passenger side like the 90-93 versions. For this reason they are an easier part to remove from the dash, and less expensive to have a replacement shipped. If repairing a 1994-1996 car that had an accident which caused the air bags to deploy, the top dash pad will be damaged around the airbag opening and usually require the entire dash top pad to be replaced.

Both the 90-93 and 94-96 dash top pads (more so on the 94-96) are prone to delaminating of the pad material from the plastic base at the front windshield edge, this will be noticed as the front dash edge appears to be peeling upwards at the windshield edge. Additionally, both designs are prone to cracking at mounting holes and at the plastic around the top drivers side defroster dash vent.

The instrument gauge cluster bezels are the same for all 1990-1996 Corvette.

The radio bezels of 1990-1996 had three different designs (seven designs considering ZR1 bezels). 1990-1991 was a gray color scheme to match other trim pieces of the dash, door panels, and console. The 1992-1993 radio bezels are physically the same as the 90-91 versions but are black with a rubberized coating. 1994-1996 radio bezels are different where they are made to wrap around the right side of the center dash edge due to the change in dash and console design of the 94-96 years. Both the 92-93 and 94-96 bezel had a black rubberized coating. As many owners know, this coating is very prone to scratching and peeling. Aftermarket replacement bezels are available for all versions 90-91, 92-93, and 94-96. However the gray color of 90-91 aftermarket pieces is not an exact match to originals, and the rubberized coating on the 92-93 and 94-96 versions is not an exact color match to that of originals.

The ZR1 radio bezels for 90-95 versions had provisions for the console mounted valet key exclusive to ZR1's. The ZR1 radio bezels followed the same color and fitment schemes as the base model versions. That is 90-91, 92-93 and 94-95 versions. However, there is a minor difference between 1990 and 1991 ZR1 bezels. The 1990 bezel (and valet key) did not have the small LED light to indicate when full power mode was active. The 1990's had a light in the dash information center to show when the mode was active. Starting in 1991 the valet key had a built in LED light for indicating full power mode and thus an extra hole was added to the radio bezel for this light. The word reading "Full" was also added for 1991 and up ZR1 bezels.

Fourth generation Corvettes contain pop-up lights that eventually require replacing of the bushings and/or gears. This guide will provide you step-by-step instructions that will save you hundreds of dollars.

In the name of full disclosure, I used the YouTube video prepared by a young man that goes by the name "ChrisFix" that provided me very clear instructions on how to accomplish this (video on page 11). Mind you, I'm by no means a mechanic or auto technician, but I was able to patiently follow the video instructions and fix my left side headlight bushings that was acting up. The first symptom your C4 headlight may give you that it's time to replace the bushings or maybe your gears, is you will hear a noise for about 10 seconds after your headlights are turned off and your pop-up lights return to their close position, which means that the gears are spinning. This could be an indication that the bushings have deteriorated and it's time to replace them.

Also, let me give you the heads-up, sometimes when you repair one side, the other side will then start experiencing the same symptom and you will have to perform the same repair (this happened to me). I was able to do both of mine in about three hours and I was taking my sweet time.

YOU CAN DO IT!!

We are opening up opportunities for vendors and event promoters to participate

in our sponsorship program. It's our intention to promote your product to the

best of our ability. The Florida NCRS Regional meet is unique, because it brings

many Corvette owners from all over the nation. We will hang your company

banner in the high traffic area of our event. Please contact us so we can build a

sponsorship program fit for your business or event. To coordinate sponsorship,

e-mail John Bucheister at [email protected].
