everyone loves their Grandchil-dren and everyone loves their grandparents…right? There is nothing greater than the grand pa-ternal bond. Living this day in time in 2015 where we live in a nation of accessibility creates temptation, particularly to criminals who want a fast buck. I have had a couple of people tell me they have received phone calls that start out “Grand-ma?” And then they answer by saying one of the grandchildren’s names. The caller proceeds to fake their identity and state they are in trouble and in desperate need for money. I have learned there is ac-tually a term for this called Grand-parents Scam. So I googled Grand-parents Scams and many articles appeared. You may want to do the same, so you are prepared if you receive a call such as this. Please be conscientious and aware of this horrific scam. More importantly read up on it to stay informed. We still have tickets to the best new show in Las Vegas “Showstop-pers” at the Wynn in Las Vegas on Tuesday, June 16. Sign up today and don’t miss this stunning show with over 100 dancers and their vibrant Las Vegas style costume. Featured Club: Crafty Crafters

The Crafty Crafters Club provides a fun, non-threatening environment for all those who enjoy creating yarn art in the form of knitting, crochet, embroidery, needlepoint, cross stitch, beading and more. Of the 30 members, the experienced ones are willing to teach those who are willing to learn. They share patterns and ideas for both the begin-ner and the advanced crafter. Members bring their own projects to work on, to share with others or to get help with a difficult step in the process. Mem-bers enjoy the camaraderie and have a good time.

The club meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. - noon in the Arts and Crafts room at the Pioneer Center. Members are free to come and to go any time during the scheduled meet-ing time. All residents are welcome to join the club, there is no charge.

For more information contact President Kris Petersen at 801-631-7436 or [email protected].

Loretta Green, Sun City resident and first runner-up in the 2014 Ms. Senior Mesquite Pageant, was recently crowned as the 2015 Ms. Senior Mesquite Queen. Although there was a lack of contestants for the 2015 pageant, the bylaws called for a queen to be crowned, so Ms. Green was selected for the honor. She will also be the representative to travel to Las Vegas in August to compete in the Ms. Senior nevada Pageant . The winner of that event will continue to compete in the Ms. Senior America event in October. For those not familiar with the Ms. Senior Mesquite Pageant, it was started ten years ago by Ms. Jean Watkins. From the begin-ning, it was nOT a beauty contest nor was it a talent contest; it provided a means for raising funds to give back to the community of Mesquite as well as a means for women to be all they can be and to celebrate womanhood. Ladies, please take note that more women are needed to be involved next year, so start making your plans now. Ms. Green will be a busy lady throughout the year and has already attended the 2015 Mesquite Lun-cheon and Fashion Show gala, participated as a cancer survivor in the Mesquite Relay for Life and was honored to participate in the Mesquite Days Mayor’s Pancake Breakfast and Parade. In a recent trip to Carson City, Ms. Green met nevada Governor Brian Sandoval and placed a wreath at the foot of the Clark County tree. Ms. Senior Mesquite will continue being an ambassador for Mesquite, speaking at service clubs, participating in community events, golf tournaments, etc. When not (figuratively) wearing the crown, Ms. Green enjoys her church and friends at Valley Presby-terian Church, bridge, sewing, embroidering, reading, travelling, and enjoys her grandchildren when-ever she can see them. Look for her about the town, and tell her how proud you are of her.

Over 130 people from nevada, California and utah joined to celebrate the newest member of the Sun City Mesquite com-munity, Jake, who will be Heather Champion’s service dog. With the help of the Pioneer Center staff and volunteers, ev-eryone enjoyed a cook-out, a cake auction, great music from Mike Rye and JD’s group, and were able to meet and greet Jake. Loyalty Dog Trainer, Maritza Trujillo, brought Jake to the party and will be finishing Jake’s training by July. Only through the generosity of our great community has this project succeeded. Thanks to the church groups, the lo-cal animal shelter, We Care for Animals, the Mesquite-Toes Tap team, and Sun City Mesquite for their support with this fundraiser. Also, thanks to all the Overland Trail helpers with the cook-out plus salads and cakes. Donations of food were

given by the Conestoga 1880 Grille and cakes for auction were made by the eureka pastry chef, Steve Brown. As we will soon have our first service dog in the community, we need to know the proper etiquette of dealing with Jake. Per the nevada Revised Statue 651.075 rights, Heather can only legally be asked two questions: First: ‘Is Jake a service animal?’ and second: ‘What task is Jake trained to perform?’ They are protected under this statue to be allowed into any public area or business. Jake or Heather cannot be charged an additional fee or deposit or be required to prove that Jake is a service dog.

The Conestoga Golf Club is “shooting a great round” for the first four months of 2015 and is off to a record setting year. It’s the fourth consecutive year that the Club has exceeded 15,000 rounds of golf in the first four months. This is especially noteworthy with all of the modifications made to the rates and pass programs for this year. If you are reading this article and are a golfer, you are probably aware of these modifications. The modifications to the pass programs increased the average rate per round by 18%. Sounds like a lot, but this increase amounts to only an average of $6 per round up to $33 per round - from $27 aver-age per round in 2014. The highest rate for a Sun City resident non-pass holder was reduced from $79 to $69 per round and is averaging $62 per round through these first four months. For the second consecutive year the Conestoga Golf Club received multiple awards from Golf Week Magazine including being recognized as a” Best Residential Course” and “ Best Course You can Play”. It is also listed in the top ten courses you can play in the state of nevada for the second year in a row. Part of the Conestoga Golf Club operation is the 1880 Grille. The 1880 is also having a banner year. The food and beverage revenue for the 1880 Grille is up by 23% per golfer and 15% overall. The 1880 Grille has produced a $50,000 increase in food revenue in the first four months of 2015 as compared to the same time for 2014. Travis McDowell, General Manger stated that, “this increase in performance of the 1880 Grille indicates that we listened to the input and concerns of our residents”. He went onto say that, “we made some personnel changes which resulted in better quality of our service and food”. This is outstanding performance for the Conestoga Golf Club operation and is certainly good news for all the property owners of Sun City. Let’s hope that this successful performance continues throughout 2015.

Best Kept Secret: La Mexicana Market

Fresh ingredients? Check. In-house bakery? Check. Baked daily? Check. Authentic Mexican food? Check. Fresh meats cut to order in the butcher shop? Check. Specialty foods by order? Check. Mexican foods cooked daily? Check.

Is there anything missing from this list of offerings at La Mexicana? Sun City customers who shop at the “Mexi-can Market” usually say they can’t think of a thing. Of course, they start to salivate as they review the lists of food items they have purchased!

Owner/proprietor Delfino Rojas won’t have it any other way. He opened his shop twenty years ago and determined that his store would always be known for “high quality” and “authentic foods.” La Mexicana does

offer items typically found in area grocery stores, but Delfino Rojas has no interest in attempting to compete with them on a generalized scale. He has his special niche market, and concentrates his and the staff’s energies there. Maintaining the store is “lots of work,” Delfino says, but this hands-on manager who loves his store does not leave much to chance. There is always a staff member fluent in english on duty, so on the off chance that a clerk does not completely understand clearly the wishes of those of us who do not speak Spanish, the english speaking staff member helps out. Future plans for La Mexicana include possibly expanding the chock-full store, or adding another lo-cation. La Mexicana is open 8 am to 8 pm seven days a week. The market is located at 400 S. Riverside Road, Suite 408. Delfino’s message to customers and potential customers? “Welcome to all!” Check!

It was a win-win event on May 18 for eight Sun City residents as Chef Scott McGlinchey and the eureka Culinary Crusaders hosted them to a 7-course wine pairing dinner. Deborah Demos, Sandi Randle, Craig Roush, Liz Phelps, Vern and Char Thornton and Rick and Sheila Walton were the lucky bidders to win this amazing private event meal and the Relay for Life American Cancer Foundation benefited from their bid. The meal was a culinary sensation and Chef Scott treated the diners like royalty. It was an evening filled with fun and laughter and a perfect way to say goodbye to our favorite Chef. Sun City residents are going to miss Chef Scott and his talented wife Mandy as they begin their new retirement adventure. Chef Scott has been an integral part of our lifestyle here at Sun City. He has also been very generous in donating his time, passion and talent to our events and fundraisers. He and Mandy will be terribly missed in our community. We wish them happy days ahead and leave our welcome mats out for them.

RELAY FOR LIFE

A variable annuity is an investment contract designed to help you reach your long-term fi nancial goals, such as retirement. Issued by an insurance company, a variable annuity allows you to invest tax deferred and includes an option to turn your assets into income you can’t outlive.

How a Variable Annuity Works

1. Once you invest in a variable annuity, professional managers manage it by investing in a wide range of stocks and bonds.

2. All dividends, interest and capital gains are reinvested. No earnings are taxed until you make a withdrawal.

3. You can move your assets among a variety of funds without impacting your current tax situation.

4. You only pay for what you use, so you control when you pay taxes based on when you make withdrawals.

Benefi ts

• Lifetime Income – Annuities can provide income for various lengths of time. The lifetime annuitization option is normally only available from an insurance company and may provide lifetime income.

• Diversifi cation – Variable annuities enable individuals to invest in professionally man-aged subaccounts. Subaccounts o er a diversifi ed range of investment objectives, and each subaccount invests in a diversifi ed portfolio of securities. A subaccount is sepa-rate from the general assets of the insurance company. Although diversifi cation does not ensure a profi t or protect against loss, it is a way to help you manage risk by having assets in more than one place.

• Professional Management – A subaccount is managed by an individual or a team of individuals who select the investments based on the subaccount’s investment objectives.

• Asset Allocation Program – Based on how comfortable you are with taking risk and your investment objectives, you can design a customized asset allocation portfolio. Because di erent investment options may fl uctuate at di erent rates, you can choose when to automatically rebalance your asset allocation portfolio on a tax-deferred basis – either quarterly, semiannually or annually. This way, your original asset allocation is maintained over time. Similar to the concept of diversifi -cation, allocating assets cannot ensure better performance or eliminate risk of investment loss. It can, however, help you manage risk by choosing to vary investments based on risk tolerance.

• No Contribution Limits – When you invest in an annuity, you are not limited in the amount you can invest.
