ASK THE NURSE My friends have all had cataract surgery and I thought it was not such big deal. Now I guess it’s my turn and I think it is a big deal. Could you tell me more about cataracts?
Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgery in the United States with more than 3 million Americans undergoing the surgery each year. I suppose it is so common that you would think it is not a big deal, but understand when it is about you, it does become a big deal.
“Cataract” is derived from the Latin Cataracta meaning “waterfall”. As rapidly running water turns white, so the term may have been used metaphorically to describe the appearance of mature ocular opacities.
A cataract starts out small and at first has little effect on your vision. You may notice that your vision is blurred a little, like looking through a cloudy piece of glass or viewing an impressionist painting. It may make light from the sun or a lamp seem too bright or glaring. Or you may notice when you drive at night that the oncoming headlights cause more glare than before. Colors may not appear as bright as they once did.
The type of cataract you have will affect exactly which symptoms you experience and how soon they will occur. There are three types, the first being a nuclear cataract which is usually associated with aging. The second is a subcapsular cataract and effects people with diabetes or those taking high doses of steroid medications. The third is a cortical cataract which is characterized by white opacities that start in the periphery of the lens and work their way to the center of the lens.
No one knows for sure why the eyes lens changes as we age forming cataracts. Researchers have identified factors that may cause cataracts. Some of them would be ultraviolet radiation from sunlight, diabetes, hypertension, obesity, smoking, previous eye injury or inflammation, significant alcohol consumption and family history. One theory of cataract formation is that many cataracts are caused by oxidative changes in the human lens. This is supported by nutrition studies that show fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants and vitamin E may help prevent certain types of cataracts. Some good food sources of vitamin E include sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach, kale and other green leafy vegetables may reduce cataract risk. Another step you can take to reduce your risk of cataracts is to wear protective sunglasses that block the sun’s UV rays when you are outdoors.
Cataract surgery is very successful in restoring vision. Nine out of ten people regain very good vision, somewhere between 20/20 and 20/40. During surgery, your surgeon will remove your clouded lens and in most cases, replace it with a clear, plastic intraocular lens.
And now Dear Reader, relax, have that cup of tea because you are a “big deal”.
Peg Drummey, Stoneham Board of Health Nurse, answers your questions on health. To submit a question, check at the front desk or email [email protected].
MVES's Referral & Information Service is beginning monthly office hours at the Center. In August, staff will be here from 10am to noon on Thursday, 8/17.

MEDICARE COVERAGE OF DIABETES SUPPLIES
Some diabetic supplies are covered under Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance) rather than Medicare Part D (Drug Plans). These include: blood sugar (glucose) test strips and testing monitors, lancets and lancet devices, insulin pumps and glucose control solutions for checking the accuracy of testing equipment and test strips. These products are covered under Part B as durable medical equipment and must be purchased with a doctor’s prescription from a Medicare-approved supplier or pharmacy. Not all pharmacies realize these supplies should be billed to Medicare Part B. In addition, some pharmacies, especially those that are not part of a large retail chain, may not participate in Medicare Part B and therefore cannot bill the purchases to Medicare Part B. Always ask if your pharmacy participates in Medicare Part B before purchasing diabetes supplies. For further questions regarding Medicare Part B coverage of diabetes supplies, please contact your local SHINE program at 781-388-4845.

Help your body work for you! Find pain relief, reduced stiffness, and a better quality of life through Tai Chi. Taught by certified instructor Susan Becker, our Tai Chi is based on the methods of Dr. Paul Lam. It is often described as “meditation in motion,” harmonizing body and mind by practicing slow continuous movement accompanied by deep breathing. There’s growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems. Our practice is gentle, requiring a small range of motion, and can be done standing or seated. All are welcome to this program sponsored by Mystic Valley Elder Services.
Beginner Class: 8 week session (9/13-11/1)This class is an introduction to sun style Tai Chi. It’s perfect for beginning practitioners. Free thanks to Mystic Valley Elder ServicesWednesdays at 1PM
