ASK THE NURSE
I have been experiencing shortness of breath and dizziness. My Doctor told me I needed a pacemaker.I am nervous and I need more information. Can you help?
I will do my best. First, it is perfectly normal to feel nervous. You are doing the right thing by getting all the information about a pacemaker beforehand. Knowledge is power.
Doctors recommend pacemakers for many reasons. The most common reasons are bradycardia and heart block. Bradycardia, a big word which simply means a heartbeat that is slower than normal. Heart block is a disorder that occurs if an electrical signal is slowed or disrupted as it moves through the heart.
Before recommending a pacemaker, your doctor will consider any arrhythmia symptoms (improper beating of the heart, whether irregular, too fast or too slow, such as dizziness, unexplained fainting or shortness of breath). He will also consider whether you have a history of heart disease, what medications you are currently taking and the results of heart tests.
So Dear Reader just what is a pacemaker? A pacemaker is a small device that consists of a battery, a computerized generator and wires with sensors at their tips called electrodes. The battery powers the generator and both are surrounded by a thin metal box. The wires connect the generator to the heart. A pacemaker helps monitor and controls your heartbeat. Placing a pacemaker requires minor surgery and is usually done in the hospital. Your doctor will numb the area where he will put the pacemaker so you do not feel any pain. It is usually placed in the chest below the collarbone. He may also give you antibiotics to prevent infection. Once the pacemaker is in place he will test it to make sure it works properly.
Pacemakers are supposed to prevent or eliminate problems, not create them and generally that is what they do. As long as you follow a few simple precautions and follow your doctor’s instructions for having your device checked periodically, you can plan on leading a life that is virtually free of restrictions caused by the pacemaker itself.
And now Dear Reader you have knowledge and power to feel a little less stressed and anxious, go and enjoy that cup of tea and relax.
Peg Drummey, Stoneham Board of Health Nurse, answers your questions on health. To submit a question, check at the front desk or email [email protected].
MVES's Referral & Information Service is beginning !"#$%&'(")*+,(%"-./(0$($%,(1,#$,.2 In June, staff will be here from 10am to noon on Thursday, 6/8.

ART MATTERS: ALEXANDER CALDERBorn in Pennsylvania, he was the third generation of successful sculptors. From when he was a small boy, he was always making “stuff”; toys, utensils, and objects out of bits of string, wire, buttons, cloth, wood and tin. He always had a sense of whimsy about his objects and invented the “Mobile”; a way to compose colorful shapes, and fine lines moving in a constantly changing arrangement. He is also known for creating and performing his own circus. Join us for a whimsical look into his world.Tuesday, June 6th at 1PM

Program Spotlight
For people with Medicare, MOON has a new meaning: “Medicare Outpatient Observation Notice”. This newly required notice must be given to some patients who have been admitted to a hospital for “observation”. Hospitals are increasingly admitting patients under observation status.
You may be surprised to know that even if you are admitted to a hospital room overnight, you might not be an “inpatient”. If you are under observation, you are considered an outpatient even though you may stay in a hospital bed for many days. This changes how your Medicare coverage works. The MOON will explain the reason for observation status and how it affects your Medicare coverage.
For example, if you have Original Medicare, with or without a Medigap plan, an inpatient hospital stay of at least three days is needed to get any coverage for skilled nursing facility (SNF) care. If you are under observation, you would not get any follow up SNF coverage paid for, even if it is medically necessary. However, if you are in a Medicare Advantage plan or your doctor is in an Accountable Care Organization, the rules are different and the three-day requirement may be waived.
For further assistance about this or any Medicare issue, contact the SHINE !"#$"%&'( ()"%*+,-(./012(3#45+6,,"7(#88,"( 8",,9(:#+;-,+6*%4(:#5+7,4*+$(#+(all aspects of Medicare and related health and drug insurance programs. To schedule a SHINE appointment, call your local Senior Center. For other SHINE related matters, call 1-800-AGE-INFO (1-800-243-4636), then press or say 3. Once you get the SHINE answering machine, leave your name and number. A volunteer will call you back, as soon as possible.
What is a MOON?
Did you know Original Medicare may not pay for rehab care if a patient is in the hospital under Observation Status? Beginning March 2017, hospitals must inform patients if they are receiving hospital services as an outpatient or Observation Status. The MOON form explains how further treatment will be covered: all hospital services would be covered under Medicare Part B with a 20% co-payment, and rehab care could be 100% out-of-pocket.
For further questions regarding Observation Status or the MOON form, please contact your local SHINE program at 781-388-4845 or call the Center SHINE counselors at 781-438-1157

There’s growing evidence that this mind-body practice has value in treating or preventing many health problems.
