The Marriage of Opposites
By Alice Hoffman
Growing up on idyllic St. Thomas in
the early 1800s, Rachel dreams of
life in faraway Paris. Rachel's
mother, a pillar of their small
refugee community of Jews who
escaped the Inquisition, has never
forgiven her daughter for being a
difficult girl who refuses to live by
the rules. But Rachel's life is not her
own. To save her father's business,
she is married off to a widower with
three children. When her husband
dies suddenly and his handsome,
much younger nephew, Frédéric,
arrives from France to settle the
estate, Rachel seizes her own life
story, beginning a defiant,
passionate love affair that sparks a
scandal that affects all of her
family, including her favorite son,
Camille Pissarro, who will become
one of the greatest artists of
France.
A monthly book discussion
group for adults.

COLORING
FOR CREATIVITY AND COMFORT
The Stayton Friends of the Library is
excited to be able to sponsor this greater
community benefit project. The Stayton
Public Library is planning to retrofit the
existing manual reader sign with a new
double-sided amber letter electronic
message board. This is the only free
community message board in Stayton.
The current sign only allows for one
message from an organization every two
weeks.
The new sign will allow for a message
every five to ten seconds. Many more community nonprofits will
now be able to advertise their events that benefit all citizens of
the North Santiam Canyon area. All ages community events such
as Santiam Summerfest, free Movies in the Park, various
fundraisers for local schools and the downtown Halloween Walk
can all be promoted easily via the new sign.
The Stayton Friends of the Library is a 501(c)(3) non-profit
organization dedicated to raising funds in support of Stayton Public
Library programs. Your donation may be tax deductible.
To donate, visit www.staytonfol.org or visit the library to pick
up a brochure.
