Christmas Eve will be a busy day with our service for the Fourth Sunday of Advent in the morning and our Christmas Eve service at 7 pm. On December 31, Rev. Kip Harris will lead you in worship while my family and I spend time with relatives. Christmas will end on January 7 as we celebrate the Epiphany and the light that Christ brought into the world. I admit that I have always loved Christmas. The smell of the fresh tree we would get each year. The Saturdays spent baking with my grandmothers – making treats we only had at Christmas. And of course the presents. I would be lying if I didn’t mention the presents. I never had lavish gifts, but there were ones I dearly loved. My Lite Bright, or the Lego sets, or the board games. I remember opening gifts at my grandparents’ house. We opened gifts one at a time, starting with the oldest person, down to the youngest person. Since I was the only grandchild until I was almost 8, I was always last. My grandparents took great delight in opening each package very slowly and precisely. Patience was never one of my virtues and I would go crazy waiting for my turn to open a present. I even made sure to work in the ones from my grandmother first, because they would always be clothes. As much as I dreaded those boxes from grandma, which she always tied with red and green yarn, I would give anything to see her and grandpa again. I think that’s part of the holiday season too. We give thanks and share gifts, but we also share memories. For some people that makes the days richer, but for others, the memories can be too painful to handle. Seeing that empty place at the table, or putting away that Christmas stocking that will never be used again, having to find new traditions – all that can make these days stressful and less than joyous. That’s why we worship in community. That’s why we pray together and share one another’s burdens. When the day comes that I can’t sing a certain hymn because the grief is too fresh, I know those around me are singing and lifting their voices for me too. When I don’t know what to pray, I know those around me are praying for me and lifting me up until I regain my strength. Whenever someone tries to tell me that they can be a Christian without the church, this is my answer. We are here to worship God and to take care of one another. So the next time you sing, sing a little louder for the person next to you who couldn’t sing that day. The next time you pray, say an extra prayer for the person who couldn’t find the words that morning. The next time you celebrate, make sure no one is left alone. I wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you! Peace, Kristin

VOLUME XXIX NO. 12 ____________ December 2017

Sing, Pray & Celebrate

Let me be the first to wish you a Happy New Year! It may seem early, but our current church year ends on November 26

with Christ the King Sunday. On December 3, we’ll begin our new church year with the First Sunday of Advent. The 40-50

days from Thanksgiving to the end of December are filled with anticipation, contemplation, and celebration. We spend

time giving thanks and sharing gifts, singing Christmas carols, and baking special treats. It’s a season of wonder, when we

consider how God entered the world as an infant, a way no one imagined, and changed everything.

There is much to look forward to this month. We will have our Hanging of the Greens service on December 3 and our

children will present their Christmas pageant on Saturday, December 9. Christmas Eve will be a busy day with our service

for the Fourth Sunday of Advent in the morning and our Christmas Eve service at 7 pm. On December 31, Rev. Kip Harris

will lead you in worship while my family and I spend time with relatives. Christmas will end on January 7 as we celebrate

the Epiphany and the light that Christ brought into the world.

I admit that I have always loved Christmas. The smell of the fresh tree we would get each year. The Saturdays spent

baking with my grandmothers – making treats we only had at Christmas. And of course the presents. I would be lying if I

didn’t mention the presents. I never had lavish gifts, but there were ones I dearly loved. My Lite Bright, or the Lego sets,

or the board games. I remember opening gifts at my grandparents’ house. We opened gifts one at a time, starting with

the oldest person, down to the youngest person. Since I was the only grandchild until I was almost 8, I was always last.

My grandparents took great delight in opening each package very slowly and precisely. Patience was never one of my

virtues and I would go crazy waiting for my turn to open a present. I even made sure to work in the ones from my

grandmother first, because they would always be clothes. As much as I dreaded those boxes from grandma, which she

always tied with red and green yarn, I would give anything to see her and grandpa again.

I think that’s part of the holiday season too. We give thanks and share gifts, but we also share memories. For some

people that makes the days richer, but for others, the memories can be too painful to handle. Seeing that empty place at

the table, or putting away that Christmas stocking that will never be used again, having to find new traditions – all that

can make these days stressful and less than joyous. That’s why we worship in community. That’s why we pray together

and share one another’s burdens. When the day comes that I can’t sing a certain hymn because the grief is too fresh, I

know those around me are singing and lifting their voices for me too. When I don’t know what to pray, I know those

around me are praying for me and lifting me up until I regain my strength. Whenever someone tries to tell me that they

can be a Christian without the church, this is my answer. We are here to worship God and to take care of one another.

So the next time you sing, sing a little louder for the person next to you who couldn’t sing that day. The next time you

pray, say an extra prayer for the person who couldn’t find the words that morning. The next time you celebrate, make

sure no one is left alone.

I wish a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you!

Peace, Kristin

organizing help throughout the holidays for numerous

families in our local area. This is a special opportunity

for each of us at Community United to reach out and

celebrate the joy of the season by spreading God’s

love.

Be sure to sign up during fellowship to provide

specific items for three families CUPC will be

sponsoring OR contribute financially toward the items

not donated. Items need to be returned to the church

by Sunday, December 17!

Again this year, we have the opportunity to

purchase a gift for a family member as well! The gift

price range is set at $10 - $15 to make sure all gifts are

similar in value.

Your generosity for this project is always

overwhelming! The blessing you are to those who

receive your gifts is life changing. Thank you for

allowing me to have this special opportunity to share

on your behalf.

“I’ll be home for Christmas

If only in my dreams.”

The Christmas Joy Offering Presbyterians have long celebrated the Advent season with special gifts and offerings. The Christmas Joy Offering dates back to the 1930's, and is used to support current and future church workers and their families. Half the collection is allocated to the Board of Pensions, and is used for emergency financial needs for current and retired ministers, missionaries and their families. Mini-grants are awarded for housing assistance, medical care and disaster relief. The other half of the Christmas Joy Collection develops future church leaders by supporting Presbyterian schools and colleges. Funds are allocated to both scholarships and operations. More info will be shared in the church bulletin and envelopes will be placed in the pew pockets. Thank you for your generosity.

The Christmas Joy Offering will be received and dedicated

on December 24, 2017.

A WARM WELCOME!

Nursery care is available upon request for children 0-4 years of age. (Older children are encouraged to attend Children’s Church during worship and enjoy the Kid’s Korner during fellowship.) At least two volunteers who have gone through the SafeChurch Training will be present to provide care during worship each Sunday. (Approximately 8:50 a.m. until immediately following worship.) Parents may feel welcome to use the nursery with their own children as needed, too. Please provide for your child’s needs while they are being cared for in the nursery. A bag with diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes will be greatly appreciated. Please also bring whatever snacks and drinks you will allow your children to have!

If you have any questions or wish to register your children for nursery care, please contact Bonnie Nesler at

971-6151.

“Freedom for Youth-Carlisle & Hartford, IA”

On Sunday, November 5, 2017, CUPC observed the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. It was a wonderful service traditional to the 16th century...the instruments played, the music they played, the pomp and circumstance atmosphere of the sanctuary and obvious absence of color…very “non-traditional” to our standards today. Following the service, Rebecca & Rylee Campbell and Edna Rawson had a brief conversation at the local convenience store. In their conversation, they alluded to the fact that the men sat on one side of the sanctuary and the women on the other…another tradition of the early church. The clerk had a puzzled look on his face when Rebecca and Rylee had their turn at the counter. “So isn’t it a little “old fashioned” to have the men sit on one side of the church and the women on the other?” he asked. Rebecca responded, “Yes, about 500 years!” She shared a brief explanation of what the day was all about at least to shed some light on the seating arrangement for the day. (You just never know when someone is listening! It’s probably a good thing that was cleared up on the spot!) Thank you, Pastor Kristin, for a very memorable service for the congregation and anyone else who is listening!
