Message from the PresidentMarch is here and I haven’t skied as much as I would have liked. The Snow Basin/Powder Mountain trip was great, with lots of snow and powder. I’m looking forward to the Switzerland trip, just a matter of days away.

A big thanks to all who made the Crab Crack a success, especially Fred Uranga, who makes it possible for us to use the Officer’s Club at the base. The club had a complete make over, and was quite delightful. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Bogus Basin contributed a ski pass for next year for our raffle and a new member, my friend, Hazel Haynes, won the prize.

Upcoming is the Ullr Festival on March 6 and the annual meeting on March 21. The annual meeting is a time for all club members to have a say about what happens in the next year. New board members will be elected and awards handed out. Look for the announcement in this issue of The Mogul.

First, I want to thank you folks who have renewed your Life Flight membership through the Club. I currently have 12 applications I am holding to send into to St. Alphonsus. The Club must have at least 25 applications to qualify for the annual fee of $35 per household, otherwise the annual fee will be $45. This is still a great savings to our membership.

Therefore, for you folks who haven’t considered renewing your membership with Life Flight, now is the time. The applications are available on the website. If you need me to mail one to you, please let me know and I will get one mailed out to you.

You will not want to miss out on the free fun and prizes as well as thanking ULLR for the wonderful snow this season. We all hope that it will continue coming. Who will be the ULLR King and Queen this year? This year’s festival will be somewhat different with the “search for ULLR” contest throughout the mountain. Find an ULLR and bring it in for a prize. It could be anything, from a t-shirt to a snowboard.

The registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and it is free to participate in any and all of the events. All participants will need to register in order to claim their prize.

There will be an added bonus, half priced club memberships ($10.00) for those that want to join in the fun for the rest of the season and the summer. We have many events planned.

If you have not attended our annual meeting in the past, you need to be there this year. It is a subsidized club event and for only $10 per member you get beer and wine, dinner with dessert, and the opportunity to get caught up on what the club is doing. Elections of new board members will take place and some fun surprises.

Social hour is from 5-6 p.m. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. with election results and awards at 7:30 p.m. We’ll be done by 8 p.m.

You will need to R.S.V.P. to Rosie Rosco with a check. Mail it to: Rosie Rosco, 1615 Euclid Ave, Boise, ID 83706 no later than March 18.

If you are not there, you might find your name on a committee. If you want to have your name on the ballot, let Rosie know that also.

BBSC will be hosting a two day ski trip and party at Brundage Mountain. It will be our way of “taking the show on the road.”

We will have two night accommodations at Shore Lodge and a party with dinner at the Brundage Lodge. We will start with a day of skiing Saturday, gathering at the “Birds Nest” at the end of the day for beverages and snacks. Then have first tracks down Main St. on the fresh corduroy snow. The party will begin at 5:00 p.m. with live music and dancing. A buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 and music again until 9:00 p.m.. We’ll even have transportation back down to the Shore Lodge where we will probably continue the party.

So here’s the deal: Cost-$150.00 per person double occupancy with the dinner. Party and dinner only, $20.00 for club members, $25.00 for non-members. We will carpool and this price does not include lift tickets. There will be discounted tickets for those members that need to purchase.

As my time comes to a close as the editor of The Mogul I thought I’d take this opportunity to say thank you. Thanks to all who have supported us and put tireless effort into The Mogul’s great success, and thanks to all club members for their wonderful support.

As you may recall it was about a year and a half ago that we decided to make significant changes to The Mogul. And boy did those changes make a huge difference! For that I have to acknowledge first and foremost Michael Bouton. Without his foresight this never would have happened. As many of you know Michael never stops looking for ways to enhance the clubs visibility in the community and this I believe is one of his best efforts. Also I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Ruby Andridge our current web master who’s dedication and hard work were the foundation to the Mogul we see today. I’d also like to thank Vince Zappy and Kayla Bovey at Idaho Entertainment Events for all their efforts and hard work. Kayla takes the mess I send her every month and puts together this wonderful newsletter and never complains…at least not that I hear!

The new Mogul and this wonderful new format have had many contributors and we really appreciate each and every one of you. I would like to take special notice of Ally Jacobs for her outstanding articles on skier fitness through the months.

Lastly I would like to thank our many advertisers without whom we would never be able to deliver this wonderful adventure we call The Mogul.

From the Editor


Another year and another fantastic BBSC Crab Crack took place on Saturday, February 13 at the Gowen Field Activities Center. One hundred and thirty hearty party goers showed up to participate in all the great festivities.

We started the evening with the social hour beginning at 5:30 p.m. and what a great way to start. The evening took off from there with outstanding food served at 6:30 p.m. We had crab, we had ham, and we had all the trimmings which included desserts provided by Dave and Ranae Kopet. Shortly after dinner the band kicked in and the party really started. The music was provided by Legacy and they were great.

Wonderful events like this take a good deal of volunteered effort and this year was no exception. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Rosie Rosco, Fred Uranga, Alicia Culbertson, Dave Kopet, Kerry Banyard, Bob Running, Liz McWhorter and Mishel VandenBusch for all their hard work and dedication.

We look forward to seeing you all next year and at the many upcoming Bogus Basin Ski Club events for 2010.

Oh no! Did you miss out on Bogus Basin’s annual $199 season pass sale? Don’t panic – while the $199 sale is over, you can still get a great deal on a 2010-2011 season pass. Through the end of March, you can buy your season pass for $239 or a family pass for $956. An individual Nordic pass is $89 through the end of March.

Buy your passes now, as prices will continue to increase as the year goes on and remember – season passes cannot be purchased or picked up on the mountain. They are available for purchase online, over the phone or at the Bogus Basin office (2600 Bogus Basin Rd).

Intrawest Sells a Resort and Lodging PropertiesIntrawest cried foul about published reports over an impending foreclosure action and the company assert-ed that it remains in control of all its resorts after ads appeared in major newspapers announcing that some of Intrawest’s lenders, represented by Wilmington Trust FSB, would conduct an auction to sell their interest in the company. The auction is scheduled to take place on February 19, while Whistler-Blackcomb hosts many of the events for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Since that announcement, Squaw Valley USA has acquired The Village at Squaw Valley from Intrawest and a newly formed company, Panorama Mountain Village Inc., consisting of area homeowners and local business people, announced that it had entered into an agreement to purchase Intrawest’s interests in Panorama.

The Squaw Valley transaction includes Intrawest’s real estate and operational assets including 2 condo-hotels and commercial assets whose tenants include 6 restaurants, 20 retail shops and a spa.

The Panorama purchase includes the resort’s ski operations, half-ownership of the Greywolf Golf Course, all Intrawest’s commercial operations, lodging units, and developable land.

Both sales come on the heels of Intrawest’s sale of Copper Mountain Resort to Powdr Corporation as Intrawest tries to pay down its debts.

AIG Transfers Ownership of StoweThe American International Group (AIG) has transferred ownership of Stowe Mountain Resort to its Chartis sub-sidiary which was formed in last year to take over AIG’s property-casualty and general insurance business. AIG has had an ownership interest in Stowe since the 1940’s, it spun off many of its assets and properties following a

$182 billion federal government bailout and the com-pany had said that it was going to sell the resort. But, according to the Burlington Free Press, Despite receiving what was described as many qualified offers for the resort, none were accepted and AIG opted to transfer ownership to the New York based subsidiary.

Ski Property Owners Sue Credit SuisseProperty owners at 4 resorts, including the Yellowstone Club and Tamarack Resort, have sued Credit Suisse and realtor Cushman & Wakefield for $24 billion in losses and damages, claiming the banking giant attempted to defraud investors through its lending practices of inflating real estate values to earn fees and then foreclosing on the properties to take control of them below market value.

In May, while ruling in favor of Cross Harbor Capi-tal Partners in its bid to wrest control of Yellowstone, a federal judge decried Credit Suisse’s predatory lending practices but Credit Suisse denied the accusations and declared that it would “vigorously” defend itself.

Canadian Ski Council Recommending HelmetsThe Canadian Ski Council is now recommending the wearing of helmets for skiing. Skiers are encouraged to educate themselves on the benefits and limitations of helmet usage.

A Way to Reduce Bag Fees on United Airlines?Some clubs in United Airline markets might be able to forget about bag fees. With United’s Premier Baggage Program, members (perhaps trip leaders?) and up to 8 companions traveling under the same confirmation number can check up to two standard bags each without fees every time they travel within the U.S. or internation-ally on United flights during the year. The program costs $249 per person, per year. If 9 members each paid $25 per trip segment bag charge, that could cost $450, so the potential savings to a club trip are obvious.

We know that we still have some amazing skiing left this season including sun and fun, but here at Greenwood’s Ski Haus we have been busy testing all the new gear for next year. Here is a hint of what you will see for next season.

It is official! It’s time for everyone to learn the term “rocker”. “Rocker” is as common in skis next year as when the terms “Parabolic” and “Shape” were first being talked about. There are all sorts of variations on the theme, but essentially the tip starts coming off the snow further down the ski. This not only works on powder skis, but we skied some skis with rocker that were designed for hard snow and if it’s done right, works very well. Rocker allows the ski to initiate the turn quicker on hard snow because of the shortened snow to ski contact area, and at the same time makes the ski easier to control in soft snow, where you have the whole ski giving you float.

For those who want ski boots that they can easily put on, walk in, and ski really well in, then Salomon has a great boot coming out for you next season called the “Quest”. Boots have continued to improve in fit and performance as they evolve with the changes in ski design.

Bindings are one of those things that most people consider something that just holds you on the ski but to those of us that are obsessed with improvements in our equipment, we love new binding technology. Marker and Salomon have some new bindings coming out next year that are lighter, hold your boot

better, and release even more consistently.

Skiing and riding is all about the fun and so is outerwear for 2010-2011! Colors are vibrant, clear, and bold. Prints and patterns are still prominent as well as “color blocking”. Color blocking is the combination of large blocks of colors on an individual garment. But never fear! If you like a more solid, subtle look for your riding attire, there are many solid options.

For women, we see the prominence of pinks and purples in many different shades. Black prints and plaids accented with bolder colors will be plentiful. Lightweight, quilted down is the preferred “around town” jacket; a great fashion look and super comfy! “Wet look” nylon outer fabric is the latest spin on the down sweater.

For men, we see colors ranging from the classic reds, greens, and blues to bright yellows, oranges, and even lavender.Clothing manufacturers are offering many variations of insulated, weatherproof shells, and softshell garments so you can find the perfect option for your needs on the slopes. Stretch fabrics are plentiful and offer great fit, function, and comfort. Winter fashions for 2010/2011 will be bright, bold, and fun!
