Spectacular Sunset
KINDERGARTEN
H ave you ever
ridden in a
sailboat? Did
you go fast or
slow? Was it
relaxing or scary?
Leonid Afremov, a
Russian-Israeli
artist, painted the
sailboat piece to the right.
Afremov paints many of his
canvases in oil paint using
a palette knife as opposed
to a brush. Compare
Afremov’s painting with
Kaleb’s painting above.
What similarities
do you notice? How
are these two
paintings
different? Do you
think these two
artists used the same
colors? Do you think they
are at the same time of
day?
Kaleb Goodell created this
amazing masterpiece!
Doesn’t it look like a
gorgeous sunset? Can you
see the moon’s
reflection in the
water? Notice
the balance of
warm colors in
the sky and the cool colors in
the water. Wouldn’t you like
to vacation in this painting?

Strawberry Success
F irst grader Adriana
Florian beautifully
painted these
scrumptious strawberries!
Don’t they look like you
could just pick them up and
eat them? Notice how she
captured the shadow, used
multi-colored dots for the
seeds, and outlined each
strawberry in pink. Super!

“STRAWBERRIES REVOLT”
MARY SHEEHAN WINN
Artists throughout
history have used food
as the subject
matter of their
artwork. Mary
Sheehan
Winn’s painting
to the left was the
inspiration for our first
grade strawberry
paintings. I’m sure
Winn would be happy
to see the fantastic
results! I love her
thick
brushstrokes,
harsh shadows, up
close composition,
and tasty theme! If you
painted a picture of
food, what would you
pick?
GRADE 2
Dragonflies on Display
D id you know that the
dragonfly…
*Can intercept prey in mid-air?
*Has incredibly sharp mandibles?
*Can fly sideways or backwards?
*Has eyes all over its head and has
360 degree vision?
*Can live underwater for two
years?
*Has some species that lay
their eggs in saltwater?
*Has sanctuaries around
the world you can visit?
Cody’s dragonflies
are positively
perfect! Check out
the awesome yellow
and red-orange
pattern in their
bodies and the
interesting
placement of the
dragonflies! Wow!

Lighting the Way
H ave you ever been inside
of a lighthouse, walking
up the spiral staircase
and around the
observation deck? Lighthouses help
boats and ships avoid rocky shores when
it is dark out. Third-grader Addison
Ivory’s beautiful lighthouse painting is a
Addison Ivory
beacon of light. Isn’t the sky
gorgeous, with her use of pink,
purple, and yellow? Notice the
posts of her fence—don’t they
look three-dimensional with one
side having a shadow and the
other having a highlight?
Remarkable! Great job Addison!
GRADE 4
Catch of the Day
P aul Klee
was a
German
artist and teacher
who lived from
1879 to1940. He
was a part of the
Expressionist,
Cubist, and Surreal
modern art
movements. To the
right is his painting
“The Golden Fish.”
What similarities
and differences do
see between Klee’s
piece of art and
Gabriella’s above?
Do you see any
patterns in Klee’s
piece? How many
fish do you see?
How did he use line
to create texture?
Gabriella Solivan
“THE GOLDEN FISH”
PAUL KLEE
What a catch! Gabriella’s fish
painting caught my eye—
hook, line and sinker! Don’t
you love her use of pattern?
How many patterns can you
find? I see stripes and
different-sized polka-dots.
She also did a phenomenal
job of mixing original warm
and cool colors, from
turquoise to peach, lavender
to yellow-orange!
GRADE 5
“Well”
Done
H ave
you
ever
pumped water
out of a well?
Have you ever
been to a farm?
Charles
Freitag’s
painting “A
Helping Hand”
to the right
takes us back
to a time when
it was common
for folks to
pump water
from a well. Do
you think life
would have
been easier or
harder back
then? Do you
think your
would enjoy
living on a
farm? Why or
why not?
Claire Landfried
used chalk
pastels to
create the
drawing to the
right. Can you
tell how she
used brown to
make the well
pump seem old
and rusty?
What time of
day do you
think this scene
takes place at?
“Well” done

ART CLUB
Mr. Nixon: How did you come up with
this collaborative idea?
Mrs. Harrison: Sadly not all middle
school students have the same
creativity they did in elementary
school. This made me think of
collaborating
with the most
creative kids in
the district—
the elementary
students!
Mr. Nixon: What were your 7th and 8th
graders favorite and most challenging
parts about this project?
Mrs. Harrison: They loved reading and
comparing all the crazy descriptions
and adding their own creative flare. At
first they were overwhelmed by how
they would draw all the written details
and not disappoint the elementary
kids. Encouraging them that they
could come up with awesome results
gave them a boost of confidence!
