Through

the Eyes

of Faith

You may notice that when it comes

time for the Prayer of Confession in

worship, I either have my hymnal

open to #571 or I have it printed. I

cannot seem to commit the prayer to

memory. If I do not have it in front of

me I invariably get a line wrong or

out of place – and I am supposed to

be leading us.

I do not have that trouble with

hymns.

For whatever curious reason my

brain works the way it does, I have

much of many of the hymns

memorized. The words of the

stanzas come back to me without

effort; which is wonderful, because

alongside the Psalms, hymns are my

“go to” when I need a spiritual boost.

During the worst of COVID, when

the church building felt so empty, the

hymn that was near to me so often

was,

“The church’s one foundation is

Jesus Christ our Lord; We are his

new creation by water and the

Word; From heaven he came and

sought us to be his holy bride;

With his own blood he bought us,

and for our life he died.”

The hymn that deeply speaks to my

spirit, and was the only hymn I had

to have included in my ordination

service was:

“Be thou my vision, O Lord of

my heart; naught be all else to me,

save that thou art. Thou my best

thought, by day or by night,

waking or sleeping, thy presence

my light.”

This morning as I think back on the

lives of those we have lost in the past

couple of months, the rise of the

Delta variant, and all the turmoil in our

world, this is the hymn that is remind-

ing me to stay steady and press on.

“On Christ the solid rock I stand,

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.”

Which hymns speak to you? Music

and hymnody are so much a part of

our worship, so much a part of our

spiritual journey that they lift us when

we are down, assure us when we are

wavering, and remind us to rejoice.

Which hymns speak to you?

“Joyful, joyful, we adore You,

God of glory, Lord of love;

Hearts unfold like flow'rs before

You, Op'ning to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

Drive the dark of doubt away;

Giver of immortal gladness,

Fill us with the light of day!”

May the Lord indeed fill us with the

light of day.

Peace be with you,

Jerry

Children’s Ministry Coordinator

I love it when I hear someone use my name.

Are you like that? When I am out and about,

walking through a parking lot, and someone

hollers my name out of a car across the parking

lot, I love it. I love it when I’m talking to someone, and they say

my name. I love to hear my name spoken over a loudspeaker

in accolades or written in print in a publication. I have always

loved hearing my name.

In the world of the classroom, we are encouraged to use

children’s names when we speak to them. Particularly in the

beginning weeks of the year when the transitions are new. The students,

moved up into their new grade, with a new teacher, often feel out of sorts

in that new environment. They see the teacher as their one and only ally.

We they hear their name spoken, in positive overtones, a sense of

community and inclusion is created. The student feels welcomed and

ultimately feels at home.

This isn’t a child focused phenomenon either. Studies show, that saying

one’s name creates serotonin and oxytocin (feel good brain chemicals)

in the brain. Just the same as seeing a familiar face in a lonely crowd

or realizing that a friend is present in a room full of strangers, the act

of someone saying your name pulls you closer into belonging within

that space.

I am so looking forward to incorporating this more in the youth group

setting this fall. We have some great programming planned that balances

Meditative Cognitions with Biblical lessons, Outreach Missions with Social

gatherings, and Outings with just old school fun. The Youth Group on

Sundays at 4:00 p.m. (to 6:00 p.m.) is BACK! One Wednesday Mission

events each month are BACK! FCC Outings are BACK! We are back!

I can’t even contain my happiness with it all.

Let’s join in together and make these moments count, once again. Let us

use each other’s names and create beautiful memories. Let us fill our cups

up with love and fill other’s cups up with feel good brain chemicals. Let us

fill each other with the love of Jesus and doing good for our neighbor and

our world. Children, Youth, Families and First Christian Church... we are

calling each of you, by name, back to be with us! Welcome home!

*P.S... when you see me from far away, feel free to “holla’ my name

loudly!!” It makes my WHOLE day!

You are loved! Shawna

Plant A Row for the Hungry

Continues

If you have overflow vegetables in

your garden, please consider

donating them to Plant A Row for the

Hungry. Each week food baskets

from Community Services feed

hundreds of Clark Co. residents. If

you take them directly to the Center,

please ask to have them weighed

and noted from FCC. If needed,

please call Rev. Dr. Jerry to have

your veggies picked up, or you are

welcome to bring your donations

to the church Monday—Thursday.

Thanks for your support of this

meaningful ministry.

Tithing during Summer

Back-to-School / Backpack

Programs

The 2021-22 school year is upon us and

the Family Resource and Youth Service

Centers of the Clark Public Schools with

share in our Monthly Missions Emphasis

for August.

Due to the advanced planning required

for Readifest, which would have started

back in February, the school system

determined the best way to reach those

families in need will be through each

school’s open house when classes start.

The 2021 Backpack funds raised will be

shared with all 8 Resource Centers for

the purchase of backpacks, shoes and

clothing this year.

Statement of Identity We are Disciples of Christ, a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world. As part of the one body of Christ, we welcome all to the Lord’s Table as God has welcomed us. If we are who we profess to be, then we must do as the Lord directs. Matthew 22:9 says “Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.” There is room at the Lord’s Table for all God’s children. Let us come together to celebrate the bread of heaven.
