It would be difficult to write this month's Spin without mentioning COVID-19, the novel coranavirus pandemic.

By the time most of you read this, you will have endured at least several weeks of a new culture of “social dis-tancing” and government-mandated shutdown of non-essential busi-nesses. You may have found yourself washing your hands more often, and more methodic-ally, than you can ever recall. You've probably wondered how soon all of this will end.

There's no shortage of nar-ratives that suggest cycling as a con-duit to freedom, exhilaration, or even inner peace. Many of us recall the feelings that washed over us the first time we rode successfully without training wheels. Others may fondly reflect on riding to the middle of nowhere and leaving the stresses of the world behind. If you find your solace in things less epic, the memory of how it feels to have the sun on your face and the wind at your back is difficult to sur-pass.

Whether you can still enjoy those things is now a matter of great uncer-tainty. Conflicting data is everywhere these days. Bicycling magazine pub-

lished an article that seemed to say, “Go out and ride”. They quoted doc-tors who told them the virus appears vulnerable to UV light. That seemed reassuring. Then they followed that with “ride in small groups” and made hints about not riding too closely together or breathing on one another.

Our own officers group initially struggled over whether to sus-pend group rides. We wondered about the scope of

real risk and whether there were ways to man-age that. Could some-thing as small as chan-

ging our sign-in practices, for instance, keep us far enough away from each other to keep us safe?

What if we could agree to ride 6 feet apart? Would that solve anything? How could we self-govern that? Could it be as simple as agreeing to not ride in double-pace lines? It feels as though we'd remain slightly farther from each other when riding single file, but it's not as though anyone has ever measured that.

The questions and the doubts can become endless. How do respiratory droplets travel among a single-file line of riders moving forward at pace?

What is the effect of aerodynam-ics? To what extent do the droplets of riders on the front of the group rain on riders behind? How many riders in the draft will wipe their faces with their gloves before the virus dies in UV light? Can we trust the virus truly dies that way, as we've seen sugges-ted?

In the end, none of those things mattered. Despite varying opin-ions on direct risk, in particular, it turned out that none of us wanted to risk remembering ourselves as riders who prioritized their interests above others. The stakes are too great. Getting it wrong

could haunt us forever. If we have the good fortune to

achieve the intended outcomes of this social distancing era, the pain of living through it is more likely to pass in time. We may eventu-ally forget the details of the miles we didn't ride together. We'll eventually forget the miles we rode alone, or even the miles we rode on the Evil Trainer (TM).

If we stick together, and do this right, the moments we're most likely remember years from now are the moments things went back to feeling normal again. It could be that split-second when the sensation of weaving through

a 70-rider crowd while warming up for a Tuesday night ride washed over you. It may be when the quiet precision of a double-pace line lulls you into forgetting your name. Maybe it will turn out to be first day you saw smiles on the faces of riders who'd returned to our group from virus exile.

We should rejoice in these moments when they come. We will have earned the right to do that by having worked together, through separation, to make them possible for each other. Few things seem more consistent with a cyc-ling mindset.

I like that.

These are group rides of roughly 20 miles that usually take a little less than 2 hours to complete. Many of the rides have a pre-post ride option that add an additional 10 to 20 miles. The pre-post ride options are announced each Monday by email. Rides are rated 1, 2, or 3, with 3 being the hilliest and most difficult. Lunches are scheduled after some of the rides during the warmer months. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time with a bicycle in good condition, a bicycle helmet and anything you need to repair a flat tire.

The Oley Fairgrounds have been reserved, and BCBC’s 2020 Shoo-Fly Classic is set for Oct. 3.

Cyclists of all ages and abilities are invited to meander through gently rolling farmland, covered bridges, and historic landmarks of the Oley Valley and beyond.

Options include 20, 40, or 60 miles.

This year, ride participation will help raise awareness around teen and young adult mental health, with proceeds benefitting the Greater Reading Mental Health Alliance and their work to support

Berks County families. The ride will offer fully-stocked rest stops, SAG support, and a full lunch. A commemorative shirt is included for all participants who register before September 18.

The cost will be $35 pre-registered, $40 day of event.

2020 Shoo-Fly Classic still on, scheduled to roll out in October

By Jeremy Rapp, Ride Coordinator First Number: Terrain Rating Terrain rating 1-5 rates the total hilliness of the ride. 1 = FLAT – easiest2= GENTLY ROLLING HILLS–moderate terrain with easiest of hills (Almost anyone can handle). 3= SOME HILLS–Moderate hills with some steeper grades (Moderately Challenging–but within the ability of most riders). 4= HILLY – The number and difficulty of hills is quite substantial (Very Challenging).

5= EXTREMELY HILLY Extreme Challenge- steep and long hills most of the ride–Requires a very high fitness level). Second Number: Total Mileage for ride

Please note the Club policy on protective headgear: ALL Riders must wear Snell/ANSI rated helmets. Make sure you have a spare tube or patch kit, and at least one water bottle.

If weather conditions are questionable, the ride host may notify club members by posting a message on Facebook prior to the ride or make a decision at the starting location based on road conditions and the weather forecast,
