I'm happy to start this month's “Spin” by confirming that I delivered on my promise of great weather for the club picnic. It's difficult to ima-gine the humidity could have been much lower for a day in mid-June. The conditions were near-perfect for volleyball or any other picnic activity in which one might have chosen to engage.

The weather at the picnic was surpassed only by the quality and volume of the food. Randy Gonzales and Carol Price were the Team Sky of (non-professional?) food service, leading a peloton of World Tour-quality contributions from others. The collective result of the enthusiasm and generosity of all who brought food and drink was an inevitable over-abundance.

This was no problem at all for Team Sky, who came prepared with a stack of industrial-sized take-out containers and sent people home with probably another three or four meals' worth of food. I don't think anyone was sent home with Sal-butamol or EPO, but I'll be able to confirm that more definitively after the next few Tuesday night rides.

Non-picnic weather has also been noticeably better lately than it was

during our relatively cool and wet Spring. This is a welcome change, since many of us are riding extra mileage along detours around bridge reconstruction projects seemingly everywhere!

Among the side-effects of these projects is a non-zero chance that any given club ride will vary from published ride sheets and GPS routes. So far, it seems as though our ride hosts have been paying close attention to this and providing advance notice of route changes via the club Facebook page.

Even when that's not the case, you can count on our club veterans' encyclopedic knowledge of county roads to save the day.

Detours should be viewed as opportunities. I used the Gibralter Road bridge outage this past week-end as an opportunity to map the first 12 miles of ride SL18 away from Route 724.

In the past I might have chosen to skip that ride entirely due to some 10-20 out-and-back-style miles along a busy road with 60-MPH traffic. It was far more rewarding to do the ride than skip the ride.

Three years and countless adventures later, Tim Millikin reached the end of his round the world bike ride when he pedaled up to the Pagoda in Reading, in a 10-minute climb no less, to find photographers and, best of all, his “mum and dad” waiting for him.

But he was still a few thou-sand miles from home, because his point of departure was Read-ing, in the county of Berkshire, England.

It was an emotional moment, as described in his own blog: “Crossing the finish line marks the end of my cycling, a line drawn in the sand which makes the present the past and the moment when I went from being someone who was cycling around the world to someone who just had.”

His arrival in Reading, and some details of his three-year journey, are chronicled in the Reading Eagle, and much more can be read on his own blog and elsewhere on the Web (see links at end of this article)

From his blog:• Total distance traveled:

46500km/28993miles• Total duration: 1081 days• Cost: £9000/$12250Traversing, Europe, Asia, Aus-

tralia, South America (from the tip of Argentina), Central Amer-

ica, the USA.Mountains, deserts, jungles —

and he survived a bike-wrecking accident in El Salvador and wound up riding to the Pagoda on a blown-out tire that he ingeniously jerry-rigged.

Milliken recounts, in the Read-ing Eagle article, that after he was released from the hospital and rebuilt his bicycle, it was a relatively short trip to Reading from there.

He is made of sterner stuff!

any given day's riding group to buy in to your proposed detour. The best among those is min-imal mileage change. Reducing elevation-change is a close second.

If you can't win hearts and minds with either of those, you can always offer to pull for all the miles that don't match the original ride sheet!

Let's not forget that none of this bridge re-building activity seems to be reducing the volume of the tarring-and-chipping of localroads.

Be careful on that stuff. I know gravel riding is enjoying a bit of a renaissance these days. People who ride gravel intentionally do so on much-larger tires and much-lower tire pressures than those of us who are riding it ad hoc in the

middle of an otherwise decently-paved ride.July is full of days of abundant daylight hours

that persist for several weeks past the summer solstice in June. Take advantage of these few glorious weeks.

If we hit a stretch of uncomfortably hot days, try to ride earlier in the morning before the sun gets strong, or later in the evening as the sun starts to weaken. Do more climbs.

Many of the good climbs snake up forested hills. The same can be said of the better moun-tain bike rides in our area, as well.

If it rains, and you choose to not ride in the rain, or not to go outside at all, I recommend the Tour de France as a distraction to ease the pain of sitting through inactive recovery days indoors.

President’s message (continued from page 1)

Gibraltar Road bridge closing The bridge that spans the Schuylkill River at the village of Gibraltar will be closed at midnight, May 29, and remain so until mid-September for complete replacement of the superstructure.

The bridge, on Gibraltar Road, connects Exeter and Robeson townships. The nearest crossing east of there, other than on a highway, is at Monocacy.

MATT’S ADVENTURE RIDES Trail Rides

Happy trails withSeasoned Spokes

On Thursday, July 5, the Seasoned Spokes will ride the Lebanon Valley Trail, departing from the Port Providence Trailhead, Cornwall, Lebanon County. It's 30-38 miles round trip, out and back, depending on where you turn around.

The trail is shady, flat, with a slight incline on the way back to the Cornwall trailhead. It crosses a couple of roads and is covered with crushed gravel and fairly smooth, suitable for road bikes. Be prepared to dismount where the trail climbs steeply up from a road crossing.

See the BCBC Facebook page for any updates or ride leaders or meeting points for those who wish to convoy to the trailhead.

On Thursday, Sept. 13, the Spokes will ride the Schuylkill Trail from the Port Providence Trailhead, Longford Road, Mont Clare, a 41-mile out-and-back, with a lunch stop at Manayunk, the turn-around point.

July 21 KU01Little Gap Ride (Revised)

8 a.m. Start at Saucony Creek Brewery, Kutztown 99 miles, 6,100 ft of climbingThe ride starts out with an uphill trend on familiar

roads thru New Smithville, then heads east with a few roller and a steep climb or two ending in a big descent, crossing the Leigh River at Northampton. There, the ride turns north and uphill to the first rest stop at mile 28 in Cherryville.

There are a few miles to warm back up before the first big climb of the day starts, past the entrance to Blue Mountain ski area and a very fast decent to the Little Gap area. The road flattens out for the next few miles heading west thru Palmerton.

We cross the Leigh River again and begin another uphill trend to just before crossing Rt 309. We follow back roads up and down until we stop in New Ringgold to refuel for our attack (or attempt) on the “back side” of Hawk Mountain, at mile 75.

After the summit we descend for the next 5 miles and then follow the Maiden Creek thru Lenhartsville on the way to Virginsville. We use Crystal Cave road to get over the last rise and back to the Brewery for post-ride beverages.

The last few miles are downhill back into Kutztown. Bring your climbing gears and legs. Rests stop planned at 28, 43, 66.

And, yes, Tim Millikin is already contemplating more adventures, perhaps a journey by kayak.

Somehow, the 9 to 5 grind lacks lustre.

Links to route maps are on the Seasoned Spokes tab of the BCBC website: www.berksbicycle.com

These are group rides of roughly 20 miles that usually take a little less than 2 hours to complete. Many of the rides have a pre-post ride option that add an additional 10 to 20 miles. The pre-post ride options are announced each Monday by email. Rides are rated 1, 2 or 3 with 3 being the hilliest and most difficult. Lunches are scheduled after some of the rides during the warmer months. Plan to arrive 10-15 minutes before the start time with a bicycle in good condition, a bicycle helmet and anything you need to repair a flat tire.

For additional Seasoned Spokes information contact David Cruzan, 610-376-5048; [email protected]

Rides on the first Wednesday of every month, as of this April, start from this brewpub.

This replaced the Wednesday Fleetwood start location. Please join us for a ride and a bite to

eat or refreshment after the ride.As the daylight lasts longer, so will the rides, and

let’s not dwell too much on when sunset arrives a little earlier each day.

There is a real need for that backup second bike that you have parked respectfully in your basement/garage.

It’s now possible to turn your old bike into donations for a good cause. Dan Allen of Kutztown would like to have that bike.

He’ll bring the bike up to date (new rubber, chain, cables) as needed.

The rejuvenated bike will be donated or sold on line with

100% of proceeds going to The Reading Bike Hub.

Visit www.readingbikehub.org to see how a good bike, used or otherwise, can change a young life.

Contact Dan Allen [email protected] with questions or to arrange for drop off or pickup.

Editor’s Note: Yes, Reading Bike Hub is on board with this and appreciates Dan’s support.
