Athletics Carnival
We enjoyed a spectacular winter’s day on Monday for our annual Athletics Carnival at Narrabeen Sports Academy. It is always such an amazing opportunity to be able to hold this carnival at such a terrific sporting venue. There were giggles of excitement galore and fabulous displays of BHPS sportsmanship as our students cheered each other on during races and field events. The Athletics Carnival is always a wonderful day and this year certainly was no exception. Participation levels were high, many personal bests were achieved as
well as a number of records broken. Many thanks must go to Mr Norman and Mr Browne for their superb organisation of the carnival. An incredible amount of work goes on behind the scenes to prepare for events such as these. We thank all of our terrific staff members and parent helpers for their invaluable assistance to the smooth running of the days as well as ensuring everyone maintained their energy levels with the delicious lunch packs provided.
Teddy Bears’ Picnic
We are all very excited to welcome our children coming into kindergarten in 2016 and their parents next Tuesday 11 August as they visit our school for our annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. This is one of several fantastic opportunities for children to experience the realities of ‘big school’, familiarise themselves with our school environment and get to know some of the amazing staff members at Beacon Hill. My sincere thanks must go to Miss Kylie Bull and her wonderful Kindergarten Team: Miss Beange, Mrs Covell, Mrs Grinter and Mrs Gaille Bowe for organising this event.

We congratulate all of our PSSA sporting teams on another terrific winter season and commend them on their commitment, team spirit and sportsmanship. Best of luck to our senior girls and senior boys’ soccer teams, junior girls and junior boys’ soccer teams, junior girls’ netball A and B teams and both junior and senior rugby league teams who are all competing in the semi-finals this Friday. Our senior girls’ netball teams and year 3 soccer teams will enjoy friendly games this Friday. Well done to all boys and girls on a great season!

Peta Hanson Principal SRC Fundraiser The SRC met on Tuesday and are planning a “Superhero” fundraiser day on Monday 24th August to raise funds for Bear Cottage. Bear Cottage is the only children’s hospice in NSW - a very special place that’s dedicated to caring for children with life-limiting conditions. Families who care for a child with a life-limiting condition often do so around the clock for many years. Bear Cottage’s vision is to be as far removed from a hospital environment as possible. They are located in Manly and are set up to provide excellence in paediatric palliative care 24 hours a day, and are affiliated with The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. Students are encouraged to dress up as a superhero and to bring in a gold coin donation in support of Bear Cottage on Monday 24th August. Students can also now enter their student portal through a link on the schools web page. Be sure to check it out! White Ribbon-Treasure Project Leadership Initiative On Monday 10 August, Year 6 leaders and Year 6 SRC leaders have been invited to participate in a Leadership Day incorporating the White Ribbon/ Treasure Box project- a combined schools initiative that sits under the White Ribbon umbrella. The two main purposes of this event are:
1. To provide our student leaders and SRC leaders with an opportunity to build their
communication, collaboration and citizenship skills. 2. To participate in the ‘Breaking the Silence’ program, strengthening a culture of respect in our
schools, ultimately challenging gender stereotypes and leading to a more balanced concept of masculinity.
Other schools in our network participating are: Brookvale PS, Dee Why PS, Balgowlah North PS, Harbord PS, Manly Village PS and The Forest HS. Stay tuned for a report from our school leaders and for further information on how we can contribute to the Treasure Project as a school community. Jane Stanley Deputy Principal

Wow, what a day we had last Thursday celebrating the school’s 60th. I would like to say thank you to all those who worked extremely hard to make this day a huge success. Firstly thank you to the committee, Jenny Harrison, Kylie McManus, Nicole Rourke, Deb Kasmar, Amanda Walsh, Melissa O’Sullivan, Michelle Howland and Julian McGee. This team worked for the last seven months putting together the day. Without this team our day wouldn’t have been the success it was.
Thank you to Mrs Jane Stanley for her overall involvement and preparation in coordinating the day, I would also like to thank Ms Peta Hanson for all her support to myself and the committee.
A big thank you also to Leanne West- assisting with the media and script, Kellie Alexandratos – assisting with catering, Sam Gojak- for the gorgeous donation of the cake, Peter Capindale, Lachelle Ferguson, Claire McHardy from Narraweena/Narrabeen Ray White for the supply of the 60th water bottles, Kaz Cerneaz, Libby Hall & Suzette Stevenson for their assistance.
To all the volunteers on the day who helped with the selling of the bottles, pavers, photos and to the massive team in the canteen cooking the 1000 sausages and packing them all … Marianne Hardy, Sonya Shelton, Nicole Holicky, Kim Gorman, Linda Zimbos, Jane Peterson, Kerry Derz, Sharon Douglas, Maria Battista, Shannon Mapstone, Louise Davis, Tania Thompson, Sheridan Femia, Cathalina Walsh, Keiryn Osbourne, Reno Giannitto, Scott Brewster, Rob Kralic (dad’s
cooking on BBQ), Madeline Butt, Jonathan Sharp, Amanda Pearson, Michelle Meyer, Michelle Wallis, Jo McNeil, Gabrielle Vana, Kirsten Simpson, Mary Leatherby and for anyone who I may have missed I do sincerely thank you for your help on the day as many hands make light work for us all.
We cannot forget the wonderful team in the school office who have also had a hand in making the day such a success. Thank you to Meegan Marnoch, Rosemary Robertson, Denise Kitchener, Jill Starr and to Steve Gibbons and his sidekick Peter King for all the preparation prior and on the day.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY to the incredible teachers at Beacon Hill for their patience and hard work for every single child at the school to teach them not only in the classroom but also the
great dance moves and fantastic music. Beacon Hill is such a wonderful community because of you all. To all the students, we are all so very proud of you and are extremely grateful for your hard work to make our 60th celebration such a day to remember for years to come. THANK YOU.

K - 2 CLASS AWARDS

The 2015 Sponsored Bounce is nearly upon us and there is a great prize of a $100 Westfield Voucher to be won for the student who raises the most amount of money for our school in sponsorship.
The Sponsored Bounce will be held in the MPC during school hours on 14 August 2015. We will be hiring a jumping castle and the children will have an opportunity to see how many bounces they can do in 1 minute! It is a fun day and the children really enjoy the opportunity to take some time out of their busy day for a good bounce! Every child will have an opportunity to take part.
Parent helpers will be present to count each child’s bounces and there will be prizes for those who do the most number of bounces in the infants and primary sections and prizes for the runners up in the drive to raise the most funds. The prizes will be awarded after the day when tallies are counted.
Don’t forget though to qualify for any prizes a donation / sponsorship form needs to be submitted! Forms went home this week and are included in this issue of The Beacon. Please ensure that forms and monies have been received by Friday 21 August to qualify for a prize.

WINTER PSSA Due to the inclement weather this season and numerous rounds cancelled due to ground closures, Manly PSSA has made the decision to extend the competition by one extra week and use the wet weather back-up date of 14/8/15. New dates for competition are: Friday 31st July last round of competition. All sports are at the regular venues with Boys’
Soccer at Millers this week. Friday 7th August - Semi Finals & friendly matches for teams who didn't qualify. Teams and
venues to be confirmed at completion of regular season matches. Friday 14th August - Finals week only for teams who qualify.

Athletics Carnival 2015 Our school athletics carnival was held on Monday at Narrabeen. We were lucky to have such favourable weather conditions which contributed to a fabulous day. It was great to see so many children participating in races and cheering on their peers. There were quite a number of extremely close races! Results for all track and field events will be published in The Beacon next week. A list of updated school records will also be included. A HUGE THANK YOU to those magnificent parent helpers who kindly gave up their time to make the day a very successful one.

The Scholastic Book Fair will be at our school from Wed 19th August until Monday 24th. There are morning sessions from 8:30 - 9:00 and afternoon sessions from 3:00 - 3:45 and we need helpers for both. I send my best wishes for Beacon Hill Public School’s 60th anniversary celebration. There are few things more vital than a good education in preparing young people for the challenges of life. Since 1955, your school has played a significant role in helping thousands of young Australians from the Beacon Hill community to reach their full potential. You have lived up to your motto – ‘Be Proud to Achieve’ – and inspire a love of learning that stays with your students throughout their lives. When I was a student, my teachers would continually remind me to: always think about other people, have a strong sense of right and wrong, and have big dreams. This is advice that has stayed with me throughout my life and it is reflected in the values of Beacon Hill to be kind and caring, to act with integrity and to strive for excellence. I pay tribute to all of the teachers and principals of Beacon Hill who have dedicated so much of their time and energy to giving their students the best possible education.
