Be Positive

To be positive does not mean to be totally fearless. Some fear is

necessary for us to be appropriately cautionary. Not all negative feelings are bad. Some are warnings of caution. When we allow fear is to take over our lives, we will stop living. Living creatively is risking. To be positive is to have the courage to push pass our fears for the dream, the reward, the goal, the vision we cherish. On the matter of faith, the Gospel of Matthew quotes Jesus as saying:Truly, I say to you, If you have faith, and doubt not, you shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if you shall say to this mountain, Be you removed, and be you cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatever you shall ask in prayer, believing, you shall receive. (Matthew 21:20-22).

The language of myth and scripture is metaphor. The language is symbolic. The fact that a statement may contract science does not make it trite or useless. Even as we do not believe that a reported event may be scientifically possible, Scripture, even by that logical inconsistency, is calling us to the deeper symbolic meaning within the soul. If we can resist concretizing the metaphor after reading Jesus’ statement about the power of faith, a new and more relevant truth will emerge. For example, instead of wondering if this even can be true, ask, “How I can move the mountain of obstacle that is preventing me to improve my life?” Then the real value of the story will reveal itself. A truth, greater than the contradictory fact that story presents, will be the truth that will set you free. The power of the positive in the matter of faith is indisputable. William James said, “The greatest discovery of any generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude.” James’ gives us the result of a positive practice. We will change our lives for the better as we change our attitudes. This means changing our thoughts and

feelings about something we previously thought as negative. This may not be easy for some to do at first. However, by mindfully practicing to be positive as challenging occasions present themselves, we will discover what good learners we are as we set our minds to it. Are your thoughts self-supporting or self-defeating? Does the difficulty of the task find you retreating into negative attitudes? However demanding our task is, it will be by far easier if we maintain a positive outlook.

Be Prayerful

Praying is one of the most vital things we do to change consciousness.

This change in consciousness is similar to William James’s change in attitude for changing your life. Prayer is not intended to take the place of the action we must take in this life. Ernest Holmes rightly speak of this by saying, “God will not bake the cookies, except by means of you.” He also said, “There were no houses or buildings here on earth before men made them.” I have never seen anyone gain muscles by praying but I have seen many who did not pray go to the gym and do it.

The Word2The Greatest Discovery Ever Made

By Dr. Ernest Holmes

Your Possibilities are Unlimited

The greatest discovery ever made is the discovery

of the creative power of thought. Our thought can help us in healing our body and it can help us to control the circumstances and situations around us.

But if we were to ask, “Why is thought creative?” we could not answer this question any more than we could answer the question, “Why does a chicken come out of an egg?” or Why do acorns become oak trees?” or “Why does gravity hold everything in place?” Whe we disco er a principle in nature, we have to accept it.

We cannot explain why though is creative, but we can and must accept the fact that it is and then see what we can do with it. Just as gravitational force operates on physical objects to hold them in place, so there is another kind of force that operates on our thinking and tends to bring into our experience those things that are dominant in our minds. This explains why fiath is so effective, because faith is an affirmative attitude of mind that uses the creative power of thought constructively.

We can use the laws of nature consciously and decide what we want them to do for us, but we are not these laws. They are greater than we are, an we may have implicit confidence in them because we know they will never fail. We know that when we plant a certain kin of seed we will get a certain kind of plant. We know that when we mix certain colors together, we get another color. We do the plantint and the mixing, but nature produces the results.

If we can keep these simple ideas in mind and come to realize that the creative power of our thought is a power we take out of nature rather than a power we put into nature, it will be a great help to us.

3Dec/Nov 3MAR/APR Wisdom Knowledge

Rev. LaRRy BaRBeR

Wi s d o m knowledge is

power—the power to changes things. When scientists Watson and Crick discovered the structure of DNA, it was said they had discovered the secret of life. It was that

powerful. Copernicus set the world on its ear when he discovered that the earth was not the center of the universe. Galileo, Darwin, Newton and Einstein brought us similarly startling news, some of which we are still digesting. More recently, the landing of the Pathfinder on Mars with its vivid pictures of the surface of the Red Planet unfurled a wave of energy around the world. But for the spiritually hungry and aspiring, what kind of wisdom knowledge ought to be paramount to us? Nothing less than this: We live in a spiritual Universe and that Spirit is centered in us. Ernest Holmes says, “We may be sure that the whole aim of evolution is to produce innumerable selves which are all consciously centered in the Universal Self.” p417 “It is this Divine Self-Knowingness in man which distinguishes him from all other creation.” p391 Stated more poetically, the Upanishads say it this way: “Self is everywhere, shining forth from all beings, vaster than the vast, subtler than the most subtle, unreachable, yet nearer than breath, than heartbeat. Eye cannot see it, ear cannot hear it nor tongue utter it; only in deep absorption can the mind, grown pure and silent, merge with the formless truth. He who finds it is free; he has found himself; he has solved the great riddle; his heart forever is at peace. Whole, he enters the Whole. His personal self returns to its radiant, intimate, deathless source.”

This is wisdom that can turn us “inside-out” or, in this case, “outside-in.” This is not just the kind of knowledge that empowers us to program a technology device--this is the kind of knowledge that empowers us to program our lives. Who Is For Me? Someone might ask: “Do you mean God, the master being of the universe, the Love-Intelligence from which everything comes, is in me? And around me? And is for me? If I accept that truth, then I have to see myself as something special, something magnificent.” Yes, exactly. When people we respect indicate they’re for us, it makes a difference. But notice what Ernest Holmes is saying: God is for us! God is in, through, and around us. Don’t allow yourself to minimize the significance of this Truth. Why, because whatever is true about God, is true about you. If God is pure Intelligence, then you are pure Intelligence. If God is pure Love, then you are pure Love. Do I feel unloved? Then I am not relating properly to myself. Because according to what Dr. Holmes is telling us, if I am feeling unloved then I am in the position of a dolphin in the middle of the ocean crying out for water! If God is creative, then I am creative. And being creative, I can shape and sculpt my life into the picture of abundance, achievement and fulfilling satisfaction that I desire. Become quiet and open yourself to the Wisdom within you and let Spirit reveal your direction. Ask your higher Self for the answers you seek. Begin to see everything you do as being joyous and successful. Say to yourself: In everything I do, I am a success. Begin to see yourself as financially prosperous and abundant. Say: I am financially prosperous; I live in an abundant universe.

The Word4

Prayer is communion with Spirit and the opening up of our accesses to God’s inspirations. The forward progress in life involves many unknown and sometimes unknowable paths. Prayer is the great equalizer, for from this communion we will find guidance coming, as it is said, “In time and on time” for us to fear not for “though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil.” Prayer is both a way to find our faith, our courage and to retain it despite the treacherousness of our path. We cannot always avoid the dangers of life’s path but we do not have to lose our life through fear. To be overcome by fear it to lose our lives. Ernest Holmes said in the Science of Mind:The person seeking to demonstrate the power of prayer in everyday affairs should think of himself as being divinely guided. This guidance by Ernest Holmes is quite what David was doing poetically in the 23rd Psalm. The habit of prayer is the sustaining power of creativity. When Jesus told his disciples they could move mountain if they did not doubt, he was both explaining a principle that can be used by anyone and how it is use.

1 Thessalonians: 5:16-18Rejoice ever more. Pray without ceasing. In everything give thanks

Make it a habit to pray or make affirmations regularly during the day. You will see a positive difference in your attitude and, as a consequence, in your life.

Save the Dates

Every year, The Centers for Spiritual Living lovingly come together in person to make important decisions about the future of our organization and those that we elect to lead our vision This makes a strong impact on the growth of not only Centers for Spiritual Living, but of the greater Science of Mind movement. Dr. Arthur our Senior Pastor received “The Centers for Spiritual Living for 30 years Service” at the Centers for 2018 Spiritual Living Convention held this year in Irvine CA.

9Dec/Nov 9MAR/APR

On Thursday, January 25, 2018, Founder’s received a special visitor—Peter Manseau, Ph. D., the Lilly Endowment Curator of American Religious History of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC. Dr. Manseau is interested in creating an exhibit at the Smithsonian highlighting the intersection of religion and science as part of the Religious History

of America exhibit. He plans to make Science of Mind a part of that representation. Dr. Manseau knew he was going to be in the Los Angeles area and arranged to come by and see our museum. In addition to touring our Museum and hearing about our history, he spent time in our sanctuary and viewed our great mural, “The Wisdom of the Ages.” He said the Mural was beautiful, and he took several pictures of it. He was able to meet at length with Dr. Arthur Chang and hear an in depth explanation of the Science of Mind philosophy and the vision for the future of the movement. The Conversation of Dr. Manseau and Dr. Chang:

Dr. Manseau: “I know something about New Thought, but how does Science of Mind fit in?”

Dr. Chang: “Science of Mind is part of New Thought. We are a group of organizations that believe in the power of prayer and thought for changing our lives and the world for the better. The Science of Mind was Dr. Ernest Holmes’ attempt to prevent the religious tendency toward dogma and superstition. Science is open at the top and so is the Science of Mind. We do not believe in the devil as an entity. God is One and

Infinite. If God is infinite, then there cannot be God and something else. That would make God finite.”

Dr. Manseau: “Why is Founder’s considered the core of your movement?”

Dr. Chang: “Founder’s was built as the central church of the movement. Ernest Holmes did not want it named for him specifically, and so it is named “Founder’s Church.” I see myself as a Process Science of Mind teacher. I have adopted the Process Philosophy ideas of Alfred North Whitehead and Charles Hartshorne. No other minister in this movement does this. Ernest Holmes wrote in the Science of Mind textbook that he dreamed of the day when science and religion would walk hand in hand. That day has arrived. Process theology does this more than any other system of thought. I believe in the relationship of God working on one hand, and the people engaging the process on the other. If people wish to be more prosperous, then they must learn the science of money; not just pray about money. Many rich people do not pray, but they apply the Laws of money with good results. Similarly, many very fit people in the gym do not pray, while many not so fit people, who pray and do not exercise, do not have the desired results. However, life is not simply about demonstrating things. We must see the wholeness of it, which includes compassion or caring about each other. The age of the rugged individualist has passed. We must engage with our community. I see Science of Mind as relevant to the world. That is what I teach at Founder’s.”

God Creates LavishlySandra Powell, RScP

God created the all of everything in this universe to be lavish, opulent, and plentiful. The stars in the sky, the grains of sand on the seashore, the blades of grass in a field, the flowers on a hillside, the multitude of fish in the sea are just a few of the ways God shows up as the abundant, Omnipresent Power back

of everything. This Power known as God, withholds nothing and is forever expressing as overflowing abundance.

Your life IS the life of God. Where you stand God IS. You are that place of God individualized. What God is in the macro you are in the micro. The very essence of your being expresses the Wholeness and

Completeness of who and what God is.From this recognition of your life as the life of God, know right now, in this moment, abundance is the

nature of your being. It is who you are. Wealth, opulence, and prosperity are yours now! Every need is met effortlessly with ease and grace. The Spirit of God guides you in being an effective and efficient steward of wealth. You understand and manage the opulence that is yours wisely, effortlessly and with an inspired Spirit that is guided by the all good of God. As an individualized place where God shows up, abundance

and wealth flows through you, as you, NOW!Be grateful and give thanks for God being abundance and wealth in and as your life now. Give thanks

knowing that ease and grace are the order of the day in the stewardship and managing of the wealth that is your true identity.

This is already an accomplished fact in the Mind and the heart of God.And so it is.
