For the third year in a row, EmTech Asia has exceeded all expectations. In 2016 610 innovators and technologists from 23 countries came under one roof in Singapore.

Co-organized by MIT Technology Review and Koelnmesse, and Hosted by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), EmTech Asia brought the best and brightest from the tech world to speak about the emerging technologies that will change our lives.

Taking advantage of this convergence of experts from different fields and backgrounds, MIT Technology Review also hosted a pre-event SOLVE-athon, a grand challenge looking at how technology innovation can address the needs of an increasingly older population in Singapore.

Following the SOLVE-athon, 45 speakers took the EmTech stage over two days to explain how advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, fintech, bioengineering, cybersecurity, self-driving cars and augmented reality, are changing our economies and societies.

The event also welcomed a stellar line up of Silicon Valley-based investors who joined the stage to highlight the tech trends attracting the interest of leading venture capital firms.

The event didn’t end when the curtains drew on stage, though. It continued the next day with site visits to some of Singapore’s most innovative institutions and research labs, including: Science Centre Singapore, SMART, SUTD and A*STAR’s GIS, IMRE and ARTC.

EmTech Asia also features the regional TR35 Innovators Under 35 Asia competition. Selected by a distinguished panel of judges, 10 young innovators under the age of 35, presented a three-minute elevator pitch on the EmTech stage. Their inventions and research were found to be most groundbreaking and exciting from a regional list of nominations.

EmTech Asia returns to Singapore in January 2017. Visit www.emtechasia.com and follow us on Twitter and Facebook @EmTechAsia.

TS: You mean like the Hollywood movie Mission Impossible or should we say Mission Possible?

JK: I don’t think it is impossible. I mean if you look at what people have already created, there are already robotics that you can control with your mind. Like amputees have robotics that canbe controlled with their mind. There are already mental interfaces, just that It is just not very easy to use or very accurate, right? But hopefully within 10 to 15 years, we would have made someadvancements towards that.

Justin Kan, Partner of Y Combinator

TS: What is the one thing you would say to our fans out there who are dreaming to be the trailblazing entrepreneur?

JK: The hardest part is just to get started, you know you got to take the rst step to be successful with your own company. You know, what you should do. Most people are scared to quit theirjob and get started, but you should start building stuff. Even if it is in the context of your current job, even if you are still at school – that’s what I did. I started working on my rst start-upwhen I was still an undergrad and so it was just a natural transition to be working on it full time.

Of AI and the human touch: EmTech Asia Day OneBy Benjamin Cher | Jan 27, 2016

It is not man vs. machine but man + machineDeep learning and AI need help comprehending humans

WHAT do deep learning, robotics and the classroom have in common? All of them require the human touch to ensure successful operation andexecution, according to experts at the EmTech Asia 2016 conference. The first day of the ongoing conference saw experts speaking on topics ranging from deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI), to bionics andpersonalised, targeted healthcare. Key concepts revolved around the need for humans in the equation, and how technology is ultimately going to augment, not replace, humanity. EmTech is the series of annual global emerging technologies conferences hosted by MIT Technology Review. Digital News Asia (DNA) is an officialmedia partner of EmTech Asia in Singapore. We’re safe … for now Deep learning is a concept that has been around since the dawn of computing, according to Quoc Le, research scientist with the Google Brainproject. “We built a platform called tensorflow and over time it took off and was used extensively at Google,” he said. “We want to empower not only users inside Google but people outside as well, and we believe that machine learning will play an important role inmaking decisions,” he added. Tensorflow is already being used and is helping machines cut down on error rates, according to Le, who added that machines can now recognise 95out of 100 images. “This technology is being used in Google photos, and it can search for different pictures and so on,” he said. “We also use it for voice recognition … since 2012, we have been able to cut the error rate down from 28% to 8%,” he added. Technologies like this are still a far cry from actual AI, argued Le, although he said he believes that deep learning is a part towards achieving such anentity. “I genuinely think that deep learning will be a very important component that will lead to AI,” he said. But we puny humans will still be around for the immediate future. Deep learning still requires a human to teach the machine, and a robot still requires

Deep Learning within Google's Brain10 FEBRUARY 2016

Deep Learning within Google's Brain

Research into the science of artificial intelligence (AI) has been around since the 1960s, but itfirst captured the attention of the public in 1996 when IBM’s supercomputer Deep Blueoutfoxed over the former Russian world champion Garry Kasparov in a chess match.

Since then, scientists have been trying to push the frontiers of AI but often with limitedsuccess, said Mr Quoc Le, a research scientist at Google Brain — and one of the EmTech 35Innovators under 35 in 2014.

Google Brain is well known as the project group that undertakes research in Deep Learning.

Speaking to delegates at the recent EmTech Asia conference in Singapore, he said one ofthe difficulties of AI was developing an often complex array of features and classifiers whichwould allow computers to recognise common inanimate objects like a cup.

The problem becomes even more profound in identifying living beings, be it a dog, a cat orpeople, because the volume of identifying features needed by computers would increasedramatically.

“My colleagues spent years trying to invent such features. I began to think that maybe it’sbetter to train a computer end to end to invent these features for itself and that was how I

RJ MICAL MANAGER GAMES GOOGLE

When will we see intelligent machines among us?

By Pedro Moneo | 02/10/2016

When I was 14 Robert J Michal managed to build a video game made with relays, flashlight bulbs and batteries. It was his first foray into a world that fascinated him andwould become since then not only in his profession but also in their way of life. Andalthough his imaginative capacity has since been amply demonstrated with its manycontributions in the field of video games, it is likely not then imagined that his namewould, fifty years later, mentioned every time a story of the personalities is drawn keyindustry.

Michal played an essential role in the eighties in creating the Amiga computer andvideo game Atari Lynx, two contributions without which it is impossible to understandthe leap that video games would for decades. Currently, after having left their mark ongiants like Sony, RJ Mical Director of Games at Google and more ambitious challengeis to connect a bulb in a hotplate for playing tic tac toe: he wants to help ensure thatthe machines have consciousness. And you want it now "is so important to me thatcan not wait for it to happen."

In the coming years, according to Michal, we talk with whatever we have at ourdisposal, since our portfolio in the refrigerator or car navigation system. They furthertalks that will enrich us, because the artificial intelligence of machines will be trained togrow organically with us. We will get to know each other, as in any human relationship, and making "friends". These "entities" as called Michal will be everywhere and videogames are of fundamental importance for their development because they serve as atesting ground before making the leap to everyday life. Get this recurring image inscience fiction become reality in the next decade is almost an obsession for Mical, andmost likely get it because he can not think of anything not to do it. The secret to thisunbridled passion for innovation is simple; he revealed on his personal website: "I neverget bored. I have not bored in my life. "
