The power of musicin Alzheimer’s programming

Music strikes a chord in their souls where nothing elsecan. It’s exactly what the local program directors seeevery day in the Alzheimer’s residents they work with,

the power of music. “I am telling you, people come alive,” exclaims one director.

“When I sing next to them, and show them where we are, peo-ple who can’t talk at least hum. One gentleman would say onlythe word Jesus every time we came to that word. It started tomake me cry. The most spiritual part of a person can comealive through music.”

Residents often join in together to sing, listen to music aspart of their daily transition or simply to enjoy live performanc-es from musical groups. “When they come to the activities, theylighten up, whether the music is provided by children oradults, the music drifts all over the building. People will startclapping to the beat and start moving their feet,” explains onedirector.

Whether it’s music or other engaging activities at MorningPointe, it all comes down to understanding the residents andcreating meaningful days. It happens every day at MorningPointe of Lenoir City Assisted Living’s STAR Programfor those with increasing cognitive/physical needs, at the newfree-standing Lantern Alzheimer’s Memory Care Center ofExcellence on the same senior campus and at Morning Pointeof Clinton.

All three Morning Pointe communities provide compassion-ate care through licensed nurses and professional caregivers, assistance with activities of daily living, three well-balancedmeals and Active Living opportunities through its life enrich-ment program. The Meaningful Day programming is tailoredto meet the unique needs of the memory care residents. Otherservices and amenities include medication management, transportation, a beauty/barber shop and a broad range of caretailored to meet individual needs. www.morningpointe.com

Growing up in rural East Tennessee in a not-so-distantpast when the clatter of the telegraph could still beheard in the Clinton station and old men still sat on thewall outside the county court house talking about theWar of Southern Independence, Bob grew to love the his-tory and sense of place that is the South. GENERAL SHALE

Build an EnergyEfficient Home

Build an Energy

The tried-and-true “American Dream” to own a home is stillalive. Therefore it is important when deciding to build anew home that proper steps are taken at the beginning

stages of the building process. With that in mind, General Shalewould like provide some helpful information that will show youhow to build your new dream home that is energy efficient andcost effective.

Deciding how to build your new home is determined by consid-ering several variables. Perhaps the most obvious to consider isthe cost to build and maintain. Understanding how materialsand maintenance relate is important. While determining totalcost is a very detailed process, a primary component is thehome’s foundational and exterior structure. Researching thesetwo aspects can help you get started in the right direction.

Consider researching:

1. Energy Codes and Regulations 2. Energy Efficient Building Materials

Building codes and regulations can affect short-term and long-term costs of your home. Consulting your builder or a buildingmaterials representative is a great way to obtain important infor-mation on current codes, as well as those materials that bestcomplies with each code or regulation.

Understanding the latest energy code requirements is vital tothe building process of your new home. Just recently, theInternational Code Council (IECC), responsible for energy effi-ciency standards in the U.S., issued an update to the 2012International Energy Conservation Code. The new code containsmore stringent requirements for new buildings to improve ener-gy efficiency. Building with materials that comply with this newcode will ensure low energy consumption for your home, in turnexponentially saving on energy costs over time.

Understanding what building materials are most efficient forlow energy consumption is also very important. For example,

General Shale provides some helpful hints

See General Shale on Page 15

Page 15: A Place Called Home

MARCH 2013 A PLACE C ALLED HOME | SPRING 15

brick is already in full compliance with new energy codes.Brick walls are “mass walls” which require less insulation dueto its thermal mass properties. It absorbs temperatures, whichkeeps rooms cool during the warmer months and warm duringthe cooler months; thereby supporting lower energy consump-tion. Brick is low maintenance and has long-term performancewhich contributes to higher resale values.

Additionally, a new structural brick that eliminates the needfor load-bearing wood and steel framing is now available. Thisnew product is oversized for safer, stronger, more energy effi-cient construction and suitable for any type of foundation.

Insurance rates may be necessarily lower for a house built withstructural brick as it is more resistant to fires, tornadoes, hur-ricanes and even earthquakes.

It is common for homeowners to expand or remodel theirhomes. These projects provide a great opportunity to lowerenergy consumption by remodeling exterior and interior wallswith thin brick veneers (full size brick cut thin). They offer thesame energy efficiency as full bed brick construction but costless. Like its full brick and oversized structural brick counter-parts, thin brick meets all new code requirements.

By its very nature, brick is an easy choice in deciding the bestmaterial to build your new energy efficient home. Seeing yourdream home built to completion is a rewarding experience; somuch so that you might think you’re dreaming.

C RS Exteriors and Infinity from Marvin have introduced to thehome improvement market quite possibly the closest thingto a forever material there is available to make a window

frame with: Ultrex.Ultrex is a brand namegiven this pultrudedfiberglass material byInfinity from Marvin. The fact that it is a pul-truded material ratherthan a layered fiber-glass is what gives it thestructural integrity thatmakes it stronger andsuperior to other fiber-glass materials.

Ultrex is second tonone when comparing itto other window framingmaterials. It will outperform and outlast materials such as vinyl, alu-minum, wood, wood vinyl composites and aluminum clad wood.Couple this with the fact that it may be the most environmentallyfriendly window as well and you have the closest thing to a perfectmaterial available. This material’s basic component is silicon sand.It takes 39% less embodied energy to manufacture than vinyl, it’snon-toxic, it can be recycled and the best thing about it is that wedo not have to cut one single tree to make it.

Some windows are known to give off a toxic form of irritant knownas formaldehyde, which may cause temporary irritation of skin, eyes,or to the respiratory system. This is not the case with the Infinityfrom Marvin window. There are no toxins present, and we can leaveour trees for our children to enjoy. What else could you ask for inproviding a quality window?

“Oh, did I mention very energy efficient, never having to sand, scrape, or paint again, along with having the beautiful appearanceof a wood window? Now what else could you ask for?” said GlenHarness. “You say professionally installed? Well, call CRS Exteriors.”

Marvin, which has been a family owned business since 1912 andhas a well-earned reputation for both quality and innovation, haschosen CRS Exteriors as the exclusive window replacement special-ist from Chattanooga to Bristol. So if you have an interest in replac-ing your windows or doors and want to experience it with a compa-ny that shares the same values as Marvin, call CRS Exteriors. Let usshow you why we have become a super service award winner onAngie’s List and the number one Infinity from Marvin dealer in thecountry.

Whether the kids have all grown up and moved out or if thekids are on the way and it's time to expand a living area, building a new home is an exciting, yet often agonizing,

experience. The reasons for building a new home are many, butregardless of the reason, the process of choosing a builder shouldremain the same.

Andrew Nadalin, president of Pace 2000 Inc. and a fourth genera-tion builder and craftsmen, offers the following advice to prospectivehomeowners with their eyes set on building a dream home to calltheir own.

• Look for a builder with a solid reputation. A builder's repu-tation speaks volumes, but it doesn't have to speak for itself. That'sbecause a builder who has spent years providing personal service, innovative design and quality workmanship will no doubt have a hostof happy former customers ready and willing to offer their input. Ifduring the interview process a builder appears reticent to share hiswork or experiences with previous customers, this should be a redflag. Reputable builders will be proud of their work and more thanwilling to show it off.

• Find a builder who is flexible. You will be paying to build yourhome, not the builder's home. A builder should be flexible and readyand willing to meet your needs, no matter how unique they might be.

• Look for a builder who does more than build. A buildershould provide a network of qualified professionals to make theprocess go more smoothly. This network should include real estateand building consultants, interior designers, architects and engi-neers. Such connections can provide peace of mind and will alsoillustrate that a builder is both respected in the community and isintent on ensuring your home becomes the dream home you envisionit to be.

• Don't build on the cheap. Buyers who plan to build their ownhome are in the unique position to ensure their home is as safe andhigh-quality as possible. This isn't always the case when buying a

resale, so make the most of your opportunity and use only top-of-the-line construction materials and features and choose a builderwith experience in working with such materials and features.Building on the cheap could prove disastrous in the not too distantfuture, so don't sacrifice on quality when building a new home.
