A PINK SHIRTDOesN’T STOPBULLYING.

A PINK SHIRTDOesN’T STOPBULLYING.

APRIL 8TH 2015

YOU DO.YOU DO.

Bullying is an issue that is affecting Canadians in schools and communi-ties all across the country. Young people are being hurt and they need our help. That’s where the Day of Pink comes in. The Day of Pink, held on April 8th 2015, is about addressing bullying and discrimination. It is a day where we come together to raise awareness, educate ourselves, and change lives.

The theme for the Day of Pink this year is A Pink Shirt Doesn’t Stop Bul-lying—You Do. We all know that wearing pink doesn’t stop bullying. Bullying and discrimination require an ongoing commitment to making our schools and communities safer. If we want to see real change in our communities, we need to educate ourselves, and raise awareness about this important is-sue. The Day of Pink is about more than just wearing pink; it is about taking a stand.

Last year, the Day of Pink engaged more than 9.2 million people across the world. This year, we want to reach 10 million. Will you help?

This guide is aimed to help you participate in the Day of Pink! It will:

» Give you ideas for fun events you can run in your community » Help you learn where you can get the resources you need » Show you how you can help educate your school and community » Teach you how to raise awareness about these issues » Show you how you can fundraise to support anti-bullying programmingYou can order more supplies for the Day of Pink by visiting dayofpink.

org! Jer’s Vision will have all the supplies and resources you need, plus more ideas for what you can do!

Thank you for your participation in the International Day of Pink!

Yours truly,

What is the Day of Pink?April 8th, 2015 marks the International Day of Pink. It is a day

where communities across the country and the world unite in celebrating diversity and raising awareness to stop homophobic, transphobic, transmisogynistic, and all other forms of bullying.

The International Day of Pink was started in Nova Scotia when 2 straight high school students saw a gay student wearing a pink shirt being bullied. The 2 students intervened, but wanted to do more to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying. They decided to purchase pink shirts. The next day they got everyone at school to arrive wearing pink, standing in solidarity against bully-ing and discrimination. The result was that an entire school took a stand and began working together to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying.

The message was clear: Anyone can bully and, anyone can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it.

Each year on the second Wednesday of April, millions of people wear pink and take a stand. The Day of Pink is a symbol, a spark, that empowers and inspires youth across Canada to stand up against bullying and discrimination.

Who is Jer’s Vision?Jer’s Vision: Canada’s Youth Diversity Initiative is the organization

that powers the International Day of Pink. We are a youth-led anti-bullying and anti-discrimination organization that works in schools and communities across Canada.

We are working in schools every day of the year, educating over 250,000 students about how they can be proactive in the fight against bullying and discrimination.

We encourage you to get involved and see how you can join our movement. We always need more volunteers to help us educate more youth across Canada!

Thank you for your participation in the International Day of Pink!

rick Mercer“We all know that bullying can be fatal.  We’ve heard the tragic

tales of kids like Jamie Hubley and Amanda Todd who ended their lives after being subjected to bullying at school.  We hate to admit it but we know that there are more kids out there today who are suffer-ing in silence. The Day of Pink is an important solution to this problem not only because it helps to raise awareness but because of where the entire idea came from.

Kudos to Jer’s Vision, an incredible organization of young people, for working so hard to make the Day of Pink and international suc-cess story. I’m proud to support them and I look to them for solutions. They are young, I am not, and they know what’s going on in Canadian schools. Thankfully I don’t. I will take their lead.

They want me to wear pink? I’m in.”

Laureen Harper“I am a proud supporter of the International Day of Pink. Diversity

and Inclusion are values close to my heart, and the hearts of many Canadians. We believe in building a country that includes all of us, together. We are proud, and fortunate, to live in a country that pro-tects us all equally under the law, but bullying and discrimination still happen. I will be wearing pink on April 8th, 2015, and I would ask you to do the same. But wearing pink doesn’t stop bullying – that’s up to you. On April 8th, I’m not just asking you to wear pink, I am also asking you to help raise awareness and educate about bullying and discrimination. If we want to build a Canada based on inclusion and diversity, we need to do it together.”

Rt. Hon. Michaelle Jean“We will stop bullying, verbal abuse, violent intimidation, and knee-

jerk hatred for differences, by creating and nurturing a culture of respect, a culture of nonviolence, a culture of curiosity for the other, a culture of amazement before what we do not yet understand. Break the silence, dare to speak out, and the whole edifice of intimidation comes crumbling down. The tool of violence becomes powerless. Who knew that persisting, as Jer did, in the face of adversity could ripple into a national and international movement? That’s the power of words, of words and action, together”
