ITINERARY Days 1-2 October 8-9 Thursday and Friday fly from U.S. to Thessaloniki. Upon arrival in Thessaloniki (Acts 17) we check in at our hotel, have dinner and rest. At Thessaloniki we remember a group of young women, led by Agape, Eirene, and Chione, martyred there in the early fourth century.

Day 3 October 10, Saturday. The next morning we continue to Philippi, a Center of Paul’s early ministry, where Lydia (Acts 16), Euodia and Syntyche (Phil. 4:2-3) were heads of house churches. Return to Thessaloniki overnight.

Day 4 October 11, Sunday. After a short tour of Thessaloniki, we drive south to Vergina, with its treasures of gold from the tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, and learn about the burial of Macedonian queens. On a short stop at Verria we remember Paul’s visit there (Acts 17:10-14). Overnight in Kalamabaka.

Day 5 October 12, Monday. The hilltop monasteries of Meteora draw us. We will visit one of the women’s monasteries, then continue our drive south to Delphi, one of the most breathtaking sites in Greece, where thousands of visitors sought guidance from the holy woman, called the Pythia, who spoke on behalf of the gods. Overnight in Delphi.

Day 6 October 13, Tuesday. We visit the site and museum of Delphi with its famous sculptures, then continue our drive and arrive in Athens, which will be our home for the rest of the journey. On one evening during our stay, we will dine at a restaurant that recreates the menu of the fifth century BCE.

Day 7 October 14, Wednesday. Today our journey takes us to Corinth, where Paul first met Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18:1-3), an extensive archeological site. We will have a short stop at the seaport of Cenchreae where Phoebe the deacon lived (Rom 16:1-2).

Day 8 October 15, Thursday. A short ferry ride takes us to the lovely island of Aegina, home of our tour agent Yannis. Here we will see the little temple of a relatively unknown goddess, Afea, thought to have been a model for the Parthenon. We will also visit another women’s monastery, St. Nectarios, dedicated to the most recent saint in the Orthodox Church, with its large new church to receive pilgrims.

Day 9 October 16, Friday. This morning in Athens we visit the Acropolis with its Parthenon, sanctuary of the goddess Athena, the Areopagis, and Agora of ancient Athens, with free time in the afternoon to visit museums or to shop. The final dinner will be on the rooftop of our hotel.

Day 10 October 17, Saturday. depart for home more aware of the gift and influence of the New Testament women. who lived and ministered in this land and helped shape early Christianity.

From the ancient Greek goddesses Athena, Artemis and Gaia to women of the New Testament and finally present-day nuns in Greek monasteries, this pilgrimage will focus on the influence of women on the spirituality and history of Christianity. Lydia, Euodia and Syntyche are women named by St. Paul as partners in ministry in Philippi. Phoebe, Priscilla, and Junia are named as leaders in the church and in the city. Our Greek guide, Aliki, will delight you with her vast knowledge and stories. Our biblical scholar, Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, will contribute rarely heard accounts of great women in the early Church.
