There are more than 6 700 languages in the world.

Latvian language is the official state language of the Republic of Latvia.

There are about 1,5 million native speakers in Latvia and about 120,000 abroad.

Its closest and only living relative is LithuanianLithuanian language:

The present Latvian alphabet

consists of 3333 letters:

a, ā, b, c, č, d, e, ē, f, g, ģ, h, i, ī, j, k, ķ, l, ļ, m, n, ņ, o, p, r, s, š, t,

22 letters are from Latin alphabet.

The vowel letters A, E, I A, E, I and UU can take a macron to show length, unmodified letters

being short.
