an upper division one semester undergraduate course covering the principles of infectious diseases and the specifics of some caused by bacteria and fungi. I was responsible for the planning and overall administration of this one-semester lecture (4 units) and laboratory (4 units) for approximately 80 students including Berkeley's medical students. Each year I gave approximately fourteen 80-minute lectures and supervised three 3-hour laboratories/week (3 sections, 20 students each) with the help of two teaching associates and three teaching assistants.

1973-76 BEHS 106, Hematology (formerly 184) (one guest lecture/year on

immunohematology); an upper division undergraduate course 1974-pres. BEHS 292/293 (formerly 295) Graduate Seminar. These one semester seminars

cover current topics related to infectious diseases and faculty in the program take turns teaching them. I have offered the class numerous times during my time as a faculty member at UC Berkeley . The following are some of the topics:

1974-75 “The cancer cell” 1975-76 “Cell culture in biomedical research” 1976-77 “RNA tumor viruses and human disease” 1982-83 “Safety in the biomedical laboratory” 1984-85 “Oncogenic RNA viruses and human cancer” 1986-87 “Diet and cancer: Potential role of oncogenic viruses present in human

food sources” 1988-89 “Tissue culture in biomedical research” 1991-92 “Fraud in biomedical research” 1993-94 “Fraud in biomedical research” 1995-96 “Cell culture systems for the investigation of infectious diseases” 2004-05 “Potential transmission of animal viruses to humans from food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and transplants

2009-10 “Frontiers of infectious diseases: Possible infectious etiology for autoimmune, cardiovascular, neurodenerative, and mental/emotional disorders”

2013-14 “Scientific and financial costs of contaminated and misidentified cell lines used in biomedical research”

1975-pres. PH 162A, 162L, Public Health Microbiology (formerly BEHS 181, BEHS 103). These are upper division undergraduate courses taken primarily by students in various science majors. From 1975-1988 they were team taught courses in which I gave six 80-minute lectures per semester and participated in four 2-hour laboratories per semester. Since 1988 I have been responsible for the planning and overall administration of these courses, and am the sole instructor of 162A (lecture) with 2 guest lecturers per semester. I give twenty-two 80-minute lectures on infectious diseases. Since I took over the course in 1988 enrollment in the lecture potion of the course has grown from 25 to 206 for fall semester and the course was (until 2016) one of the core courses for the School of Public Health’s new undergraduate major. It is on the approved elective list for many undergraduate majors in the biological sciences, e.g. MCB, nutrition, integrative biology and is an absolute requirement for the dietician pathway of the Nutrition Deaprtment.

From 1988-2000 I taught four to six 2-hour laboratory sessions (PH162L) per week

with the help of teaching assistants and the laboratory coordinator. Because of the huge demand for both the lecture (PH162A) and laboratory (PH162L) portion of these courses, I established the summer school offering for these two courses in 1996 and continue to oversee the summer courses, even though I am not an instructor for these courses. Enrollment in the summer reached a peak around 2012 at ≈150 for PH162A and 40 for PH162L, but has declined since then, probably due to increase in fees for summer school courses.

1977-89 BEHS 207 Advanced Methods in Medical Microbiology (formerly 280C, 284A-B).

I developed the tissue culture component of this team-taught course, which, during the quarter system I taught as a separate course (280C, 284A). I taught laboratory methods in tissue culture and tumor virology to a maximum of 12 students for about two-thirds of the course. The course had one, 1-hour lecture and two, 5-hour labs per week that I was directly responsible for. I did much of the cell preparation work myself, as there was no teaching assistant.

1977-84 BEHS 210A (formerly BEHS 296), Public Health Debate. Debate for Masters of

Public Health students. I originated the idea and organization for this course and coached the first five debates. For the next 14 years the course was taught by Dr. Sensabaugh.

1978-79 BEHS 104, Virology (formerly 182). I gave two guest lectures on tumor virology. 1978-96 BEHS 298P - Field Training for DrPH and MPH Students. For each DrPH student,

I arranged a laboratory administration field- training experiences in the community; one in a private institution, and one in a public institution. I evaluated the written reports of the projects and discuss projects with the field supervisors. I arranged field training experiences for 1-2 MPH students per year, usually at the California Department of Health Services. Until about 1995, our program did not receive the assistance of SPH field training supervisors (Public Health Practice), so we had to do these arrangements ourselves.

1982-84 PH 291, School-wide Breadth Course. I gave three 1.5-hour lectures each years on genetics, genetic diseases and their prevention; and public health immunology, and nonspecific host defenses as determinants of disease.

1989-94 I organized a seminar series for all doctoral students in our program, which featured

presentations by students of their dissertation research, and research presentations by faculty, alumni, and guest speakers.

1989-pres. PH 266, Viruses and Human Cancer (formerly BEHS 296P, 291P). I initiated this

course to give graduate students a chance to acquire in-depth knowledge of viruses causing human cancers. I give ≈12 hours of lecture per semester on basic information. These are supplemented by student-led discussions of original research articles, and the presentation of student-written reviews or grant proposals. There are 1-2 guests speakers per semester. Enrollment is usually 10-15 students.

1995-96 Molecular/Cell Biology Dept. Ethics Workshop (participated as a section discussion

leader) 1997-01 PH 150C, Public Health Biology. This was one of 8 courses comprising a core

required of all students working toward the Master’s of Public Health degree. This 2 unit course was designed to provide the basics of biology for students who had little or no biology at a university level, and presented biology in the context of its public health applications. Most of the students were in the programs in Health Planning & Management, Community Health, Biostatistics, and Epidemiology. A few undergraduates in social science majors were usually enrolled. I was the head instructor of this team-taught course. I gave seven 1-hour lectures and handled testing and administrative aspects of the course. The enrollment was 25-50.

1999-03 PH260A, Principles of Infectious Diseases (one lecture on general properties of viruses and one lecture on hepatitis viruses) 2000-10 PH260B, Principles of Infectious diseases (one guest lecture on my research) 2011-14 PH263, Public Health Immunology (one guest lecture/year of cancer immunology) Continuing Education courses taught in the community 1978-80 Alta Bates Hospital Continuing Education Program for Nurses (CME*credit); One,

2-hour lecture/year on causes of cancer and current research directions, as part of a nine-week series on cancer. Video tapes of the nine-week series were subsequently used to train nurses entering service on the oncology wards.

1979-81 Occasional speaker for physician staff meetings (CME* credit); One-hour lectures

on screening for breast atypias using exfoliative cytology.

1994-98 Course in Ocular Therapy for Optometrists (CEC* credit) - two 80-minute lectures

on bacteriology and virology; organization and supervision of 7 hours of laboratory exercises in medical bacteriology (80 students and 8 teaching assistants) (2-3X per year); certification as a result of taking the course permits optometrists to prescribe topical antibiotics for ocular infections
