Dear Parishioners, A word of thanks is an order to the nearly 1,100 parishioners and guests who took the me to fill out either the paper surveys or the surveys by smart phone from Dynamic Catholic the weekend before last. While I was in Cincinna last week at the pastors’ mee ng, our former Dynamic Parish liaison, Scot Landry, men oned to me how gra fied he was
PLEASE NOTE: For Thanksgiving holiday, the office will close at NOON on Wednesday, November 27th and reopen on Monday, December 2, 2019 at 9:30 a.m.
with the par cipa on level that we had. He especially noted that the number of our surveys by phone was comparable to Mary Queen of Peace Parish in Mandeville, which I myself was very pleased to hear. I was also very pleased with the 827 par cipants who took the paper surveys, as well. While Dynamic Catholic will collect the informa on for us and get it back to us in a cohesive form report, probably in February or March, I have had a chance to review some of the informa on that you have submi ed. It’s good, honest, candid feedback, and I do appreciate it. You will recall that there were different ques ons about your sense of connec on to the parish, your sense of our vision for the parish, and ques ons about the level of prayer, study, and support in which you are engaged at the present moment. Among those different responses, I was not completely surprised to see that there were a decent number of parishioners who were unclear about where our parish is going in the future. I can fully understand that. Every family wonders where the year ahead will take them—especially when big changes take place. Nonetheless, I do believe that focusing the next 12 months on improving our prayer lives is a good and holy ac on that we should take individually and as a parish family—because it is in GOD’s presence where we make our best discernment. I was genuinely saddened to read a few comments from people who felt like they had no connec on to the parish and that no one from the parish seemed to care about them. I would hope that would take some of you aback, as well. While none of us can be everyone’s best friend, it is good to know a li le something, perhaps even more, about the people who sit next to you in the pews Sunday a er Sunday. It’s good to pray for one another. I ask you to make it your goal to consider praying for the people you’ll meet at the Sunday Mass that you most frequently a end BEFORE you go, when you are at home or at work. Ask God to help you become more aware of the needs around you and to help you to find a connec on with those with whom you worship. Extend a hand. Smile at a stranger. Laugh with a child. Encourage one another. I, personally, want to do a be er job s ll to get to know everybody by name – that is s ll my goal 6 1/2 years into serving as your pastor. I do also want you to know that I take as an important responsibility and pleasure the obliga on to pray for you daily. I pray for your cares and your woes, for the people close to you, for the people estranged from you, and for the joys in your lives. I’m not saying this to brag; I think that’s something all of us as Catholics need to do. We should pray for our fellow parishioners and their needs, because I would think we want them to pray for us in our need. As you will hear in Ma hew Kelly’s video at Mass this weekend, this is an important me in the life of the Church and in our own lives: it’s a me to rededicate our efforts to pray, to focus our minds and souls on Jesus Christ and how HE impacts our ac ons and our future - and how we can become more connected to one another. Yours in Christ,

V N It’s almost time for our Thanksgiving Food Drive! We will be sorting canned goods and boxed items on

in classrooms 4, 5, and 6
We need volunteers! Any amount of time you can donate that day will be appreciated!
If you grew up going to Catholic school during a certain era (or, perhaps more recently, grew up homeschooled) you probably memorized the seven corporal and seven spiritual works of mercy. A brief refresher: T h e S e v e n C o r p o r a l Wo r k s o f M e r c y
1. Feed the hungry. 2. Give drink to the thirsty. 3. Clothe the naked. 4. Shelter the homeless. 5. Visit the sick. 6. Visit the imprisoned. 7. Bury the dead.
T h e S e v e n S p i r i t u a l Wo r k s o f M e r c y
1. Instruct the ignorant. 2. Counsel the doub ul. 3. Admonish the sinner. 4. Comfort the afflicted. 5. Bear wrongs pa ently. 6. Forgive offences willingly. 7. Pray for the living and the dead.
No ce the seventh of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Especially in this month of November, Catholics pray for the holy souls: those who have died in friendship with God and will eventually enter heaven, but who s ll need a
me of purifica on (purga on, purging, cleansing) from any sin or inordinate a achments to the things of this world—and so are suffering the refining fires of purgatory as they await the day they are able to enter heaven. Our prayers can help them enter more quickly into heaven! We owe it to the dead to lay them to rest by burying their bodies and praying for their souls. However, our confused modern culture has given us some strange ideas about how to treat the bodies of, so that many mes people do not give their loved ones the burial they are due, but keep their ashes at home unburied, or sca er the ashes, or even put them into jewelry! This is not in keeping with our obliga on to bury the dead; the o en godless sen mentality of popular culture has confused people about everything from concep on to weddings to burials (or lack thereof). And so most of us honestly don’t know any be er anymore! Well, now you know. If you have been keeping the cremated body of a family member or other loved one in your home, just give me a call or send me an e-mail, and I will gladly help you give them a Chris an burial. (I’m out of town this week on retreat, but I will get back to you!) There is no fee; this is part of what I do as a priest, and I will be happy and honored to do this for you and your deceased loved ones! We owe it to them! As for praying for their souls, here are some prayers that you can say. The Prayer of St. Gertrude Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the holy souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family. Amen. Prayer for the Dead Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Members of our parish are invited to sign up to receive the
wooden case that contains a consecrated chalice, and comes
with prayer cards and stationery to send notes of
encouragement to the Seminarians of our Archdiocese of New Orleans. Once signed
up, parishioners take the chalice home and put it in a
place of honor in their home for one week. Each day, during
prayer times (morning, bedtime or at meals), prayers are
offered for an increase and perseverance of holy vocations.
If you choose, you can also write a note of support to a Seminarian, at Notre Dame
Seminary. The following Saturday, return the case and the other items to the church community room table so that
another parishioner may take it home the following week.
