FEBRUARY 5, 2017 – FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Page 2 | 232 St. John the Baptist Catholic Church
Dear brothers and sisters,
Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds
and glorify your heavenly Father." (Matthew 5:16)
On this, the Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we find ourselves with our Lord still on the mount. The Beatitudes are words addressed to those who are with Him on the mountain of encounter with God, His Father. This is the setting from which comes the beatitudes we heard last Sunday and all of Christ’s teachings heard from His mouth on that mountain. Today’s gospel is a continuation of words spoken by Christ whilst He is in the presence of His Father and with disciples who have followed Him up to that mountain. We must remember this: Christ’s teachings are not just mere ideas. Christ is not into proclaiming mere ideologies. The Church is not about mere ideologies. Catholics are not just champions of mere ideologies. Ideologies did not create the world. Ideologies do not rule the world. Ideologies will not save the world. Which ever ideology any person or group of persons may subscribe to, however well meaning they may be, it does not save. Ideologies are dead and cold abstract notions that carry no life in and of them. So the beatitudes and today’s teachings must not be viewed as mere ideologies, or doctrines, or platform or mandates by which human beings are called to live. The beatitudes and all of Christ’s teachings come out of, result from, happen because of an encounter of persons, of four very distinctive persons: God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit, and the disciple. It is the encounter between the disciple and his Master, between the fallen human being with his Creator, the isolated human being with the Holy Trinity that results in a human being transformed. The transformed disciple is the result, is the beatitude. Beatitudes then are persons who have encountered God on the mountain. Beatitudes are persons from whose being the light of God’s being
shines. God is the light that shines through from the life of a disciple He has chosen to dwell in. The disciple who responds daily to Jesus’ call from the mountaintop of prayer to His Father receives within himself the Holy Spirit that transforms his soul and conforms it to Jesus’ own and together they become salt of the earth. Where is that mountain upon which I may encounter God? Golgotha, the Cross. It is in the crucified Jesus that the human encounters the divine, where the disciple meets the Master, where the sinner is purified and transformed into salt, into light. This is where Catholics are educated. The cross is the school of catholic education. The cross is the school from which graduate those who light up the world. So when we are gathered by the Master around the mountain of His altar, we who respond to Him allow ourselves to be transformed by Him into His light, His salt for the earth. In being His salt and His light, we draw attention away from ourselves. Like John the Baptist, we must decrease so that the Lamb of God must increase. We seek not our own praise, our own accolades, or awards or recognition or applause. We already possess Him. We need not these other worthless and passing things. When the world sees us and all our good deeds they should see in them the presence of God the Father and to Him only give the glory. We in turn have become the salt, the light through which people can come to encounter the Father too. If it is only ourselves they see, then there is obviously more time of education needed at the mountain of the cross.

TEACH THE CHILDREN Gospel Reading: Matthew 5:13 – 16
Why do you think Jesus tells us that we are to be like salt and light?
Salt and light are both simple, everyday things that we don’t even
think about. We are used to having them around. Now imagine if
they we gone from our world. Our food would be bland, tasteless
and the dark of night would seem endless - unable to see in the
dark we could do nothing but wait for the light of day. Most of us
have never even considered giving thanks for salt and light
because they have always been around for us.
Jesus uses “Salt” and “Light” as things we are to strive to be like.
Jesus wants us to make a BIG difference in the everyday lives of
others by living in service to each other. He wants us to help
them live their life more fully. He wants us to help others in a way
that doesn’t get met with a lot of thanks or credit. He wants us to
take ordinary, necessary actions that build up the Kingdom of
God. As disciples of God, we can bring hope to those who suffer
by working to help them as Jesus did. Leaving off with what
Jesus taught us about the Beatitudes last week, we continue to
hear Jesus’ call to be different. Jesus tells us that some people
will reject us for living as we are called to live, but do it anyway!
In today’s world each of us must find the strength and grace to
think and act with the mind and heart of Christ.

ST. JOHN’S NEED YOUR HELP
It is no secret that our parish has been blessed with countless VOLUNTEERS who have given their TIME and TALENT to our parish throughout the years.
Would YOU please consider offering your
time and talent in any of the following roles: Music Ministry: We are in need of musicians.
Please contact Nio Logaivau through the parish of school.
American Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator:
We are in need of 1 or 2 people to work directly with our American Red Cross Blood Drive representative to organize our Blood Drives which are held at the school 2 – 3 times a year. Ideally, this candidate would be a school parent who would be able to coordinate the dates/times/schedule of donors/ and set-up for these drives. If not one comes forward, the Blood Cross may be forced to discontinue the drives that help our area community. Please contact Becky, parish office to volunteer.
Cleaning Ministry: We are in need of 2-3 people who are willing to donate their time to keeping our church clean. We currently have 5 teams who alternate serving. Each time would ideally have 4
members. There are no set schedules or duties amongst team members. And each team serves less than once a month. Team members are able to come and clean at their convenience during the week their team is assigned to this duty.
Please call the parish office to volunteer.
