developed by Kaplan in
collaboration with LinkedIn.
Career Journey is a self-paced
career management course
which provides practical
strategies at different stages of
career advancement and
transitions. Mr Peter Murray

to share more about the tool to
our ardent participants listening
in on how to best utilize their
LinkedIn account with the tool.
Participants who attended the
Career Readiness Clinics were
treated to an array of topics
related to job professionalism
and industry insights. These

self-improvement subjects
including grooming and image

and prepare themselves better
for work transitions. A big thank
you to all our event partners,

Do you know that according to a report
from ABC News, 80% of today’s jobs
are landed through networking? We are
talking about smart jobseekers building
a rich network consisting of people
from different industries and trades
they meet through networking!
With this fact in mind, the Student
Affairs & Graduate Services Office and
Kaplan Student Committee (KSC) put
together Biz Buzz Night, an event
conceptualized as a simulation of a
typical corporate networking function
and forum plus a business idea pitching
competition. It was a true experience of
cross cultural communications platform
with an international audience including
diversified participants from countries
such as Singapore, China, India,
Indonesia, South Korea, Sri Lanka,
Vietnam, Holland, United Kingdom and
Russia. The agenda comprised of
forums led by four industry experts,
networking sessions and the business
idea competition where competing
members of the audience took turns to
present about their business ideas.
The forum speakers, who also served
as the panel of judges for the business
idea competition, were all successful
professionals who shared about their
various industry, corporate and
entrepreneurial experiences. Public
speaking expert, Mr Kelvin Tan, the co-
founder of Speech Academy Asia,
opened the event and got the audience
hyped and geared up for the event, and
Mr Irwan Bakar who is the
owner and Creative Director of
PlayPause, Singapore talked
about how his creative career
came about and gave aspiring
entrepreneurs some great tips
to think about. Mr Kelvin Tan,
Vice President Global Retail of
Standard Chartered Bank shared his
‘jobhopping’ experiences and gave tips
on transitions from school to corporate
life while Mr Gihan Cooray, Vice
President of NDB Securities Sri Lanka
gave industry insights and what it took
to succeed in the financial industry.
Held at the Wilkie campus on the
Thursday evening on 12 March 2015,
Biz Buzz Night 2015 was also a
platform for competing participants to
demonstrate their innovative business
ideas, rally support, and garner votes of
the audience through their
presentations and interactions.
Team Seafood Restaurant, comprising
of Amadea Yulina, Shin Yulbeg and
Muhammad Hafiz Tahir, emerged as
the overall winner, with Jeremy Wan
Hao and Tan Cheng Hwee coming in
second and third place respectively.
The runners up also walked away with

level of energy in the room, and the
enthusiasm of the young and aspiring
business professionals showed vast
potentials of these future business

Welcome BBQ at Kaplan Residences
A welcome BBQ party
was recently organised by
the international
recruitment team for 140
new international students
on 7 March.
Held at the newly
refurbished Kaplan
Residences at McNair
Road, the students
participated in the many
teambuilding games
conducted by student
leaders of the Kaplan
Student Committee and
later enjoyed a barbeque
dinner after the fun and
games.
International students
from China, Korea,
Myanmar, Malaysia and
Thailand were divided into
different teams to play in
activities such as
dodgeball and balloon
war.
Everyone dug into
delicious barbeque food
that evening while the
more outgoing students
entertained the rest by
singing karaoke to win
some nice mementoes. It
was a great way to make
new friends and to
introduce the campus life
in Kaplan!

Did you know that your body language can say a lot more about you than your words during a
job interview?
You might think that non-verbal behaviour is incapable of sinking the ship. According to College
Journal, an interview comprises of 55% body language, 7% verbal communication, and 38%
paralanguage or intonation. Hence, non-verbal communication is not just essential, but
exceptionally vital to ace the process.
So how do you impress the interviewers with your non-verbal communications? Here are some
recommended Do’s and Don’ts to remember before you walk into that interview room.
Don’t:
Cross your arms, it can be
seen as a sign of
excessive defensiveness.
Stare blankly at the interviewer. It might
show that you turned up for the
interview unprepared.
Avoid eye contact. It is important to
maintain eye contact to convey
confidence and certainty.
Do all the “Do’s” in excess. It will make
you seem fake and insincere.
Look at your watch or the clock in the
room. This will suggest to hirers you
are in a hurry.
Eat pungent foods
Arrive with sweaty clothes and unclean,
messy hair.

Tips-The-Interview-Body-Language-Dos-and-Donts/

language-interview-mistakes-2/
Do’s:
Sit-up straight and lean
slightly forward in your
chair during the
interview. Leaning forward show that
you are interested in what the other
person is saying.
Get grounded. Do not be seen fidgeting
by shaking your legs or swaying your
body. Put both feet firmly on the
ground. For ladies, cross at the
ankles and position your knees to
either right or left. Crossing your legs
will invariably make you lean
backwards, which is not a good
posture to adopt during interviews.
Use appropriate hand gestures when you
are highlighting on the points that you
are sharing.
Show your keenness by keeping an
attentive expression. Nod and make
positive gestures to indicate
understanding to the subjects that is
being discussed.
If there are more than one interviewer in
the room, make sure you
address all interviewers with
brief eye contact and return
your attention to the person
who has asked you a question.
Switch off your mobile phones and
devices so you are not
distracted.
