Dear Parents, Guardians, and Family Members,
Spring is finally here!! I am so looking forward to all the flowers that these
April showers will be producing. We will be starting our Standards of Learning
(SOL) testing on May 18. A schedule will be sent home when it has been finalized.
Please continue to encourage your child to carry on doing their best. We have made
many positive gains this year. We will take great comfort in the fact that students at
King and Queen Elementary School (KQES) have had a wonderful year and
excelled in so many areas; which are too numerous to mention. As my fourth year
as Principal of KQES comes to a close, I look back and see changes that have been
for the good and I look forward to many more changes beneficial to our students.
Please take a few minutes and thank your child’s teacher for all that he or she
has done to help your child grow both academically and personally. Teacher and
Staff Appreciation Week is May 4-May 8. No matter the individual student
situation, in the end, each child had a teacher that cared and worked hard to ensure
his or her learning. Our teachers and support staff deserve great credit for all they
do each day to ensure the safety of each child and for ensuring that each child has
the opportunity to learn. KQES has a dedicated and professional staff. I greatly
appreciate all that they do each day to help us become a school worth talking and
bragging about.
Please feel free to contact me by email at [email protected] regarding any
concerns.
Thank you,
Carol B. Carter, Ed. D.

GEAR UP
King and Queen County Ele-
mentary School‘s after-school pro-
gram, GEAR-UP, is off to a fantas-
tic start. The students participate
three days a week, from Tuesday to
Thursday, and work on academic
skills which primarily are focused
on Reading and Math. One day a
week, however, the students ex-
plore the world of STEM. STEM
stands for Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math. The stu-
dents are presented with challenges and have a full ninety minutes to solve them.
“One thing I like about GEAR-UP is STEM Day,” remarked student Shavonna
Kelly.
In the past, students have built race cars out of Legos, built towers out of index
cards, solved mysteries using CSI techniques on the computer, designed and flew
paper airplanes and have worked on building a free standing bridge that can sup-
port 100 pennies.
“We are very excited by the students’ progress and enthusiasm,” said GEAR UP
Supervisor Anne Kennedy. “We have almost 100% of our seventh grade students
signed up,” added fellow supervisor and School Councilor Pia Holmes.
On non-STEM days, students get additional help in subject matter using games
and technology. The students appreciate the more relaxed atmosphere of the pro-
gram. “We can have more fun than during regular school,” commented student
Wilasha Ackies. The schedule is faster paced, as the students visit three teachers
in ninety minutes.
GEAR UP will follow the students over the summer and into High School. As
long as the students attend Central
High School, they will have the po-
tential to earn money that will be
saved for them to be used for future
college expenses. The students will
be visiting several area colleges to
give them a glimpse of what their
future can hold. “These students
have an excellent opportunity and
many are taking advantage of it,”
concluded Ms. Kennedy.
