It’s been a long hot summer and the Clothing House has been as busy as ever! In the months of June, July, and August we provided clothing and hygiene products to over 900 individuals, distributed 1,440 diapers and 160 emergency hygiene bags. The Clothing House has become so busy that we encourage shoppers to make an appointment rather than “walk-in.” We do our best to get people what they need, but there are limits to the number of shoppers possible at one time in this little house.

Clothing and hygiene donations have been steady but because we have been so busy we have struggled to maintain a consistent supply of full sized hygiene products and size 5 diapers. One of the items we have for purchase is the Large Hygiene Bag which we sell for $5. Each bag contains at least $20 worth of products. Here is a list of the items we need in order to continue

to provide these basic necessities to our shoppers:

Over the next few weeks we will be switching from summer to winter clothing. Men’s coats, boots and gloves go quickly, so please keep us in mind as you clean out your closets. Every little bit helps!

Thanks to everyone for giving so generously and continuing to support Cameron Community Ministries in all that we do!

Peace, love and happiness to you all!

Sara Sorenson, Clothing House Coordinator

Volunteer Spotlight

Summer was an amazing time for volunteerism here at Cameron! We have seen extensive growth in our Volunteer Program and how we recruit and maintain volunteers. We’d like to highlight some spotlights over the past few months.

Lynne Fisher has been a special volunteer for a couple of years and we couldn’t be more thankful. Lynne spends her time in our kitchen and really loves serving the individuals she meets. Thank you Lynne for the warmth and the heart that you bring to your service with us!

Kristen Beck spent her summer working in our Clothing House. Kristen has a warm smile and loved her time with us. She was consistent and showed her commitment to Cameron and for that we are extremely thankful!

Clare Dubrin spent her summer in our Summer Safe Haven program. She really became a part of our Youth Staff family. Clare has a gift with children. We wish her well as she travels internationally to teach English!

By hosting larger scale volunteer events, we are able to provide more services to the community at large as well as bring more attention to the amazing things that happen at Cameron. For example, we recently started a free Haircut Day on Fridays and rely solely on volunteers to provide this service. Since its inception, over 50 haircuts have been given! Also, while our kitchen was under repair, we had a large group of volunteers from Brass Bar and Lounge bring food, toys and crafts for the day. This partnership gave us the opportunity to be featured on Channel 13 Bright Spot. We also hosted a HeathiKids #playrocs event where several volunteers came on a Saturday to open the playground for children in the neighborhood to play.

We are thankful for each and every person who comes to help. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, feel free to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you!

Spotlight of SuccessWe wanted to highlight an accomplishment of keith Dorman, a special cameron guest. Keith has been coming to our office regularly for months, polishing up his resume and applying for jobs. It took awhile, but Keith now has a full time position at Strong Memorial Hospital in their Transportation Department! Anything is possible with persistence and a hand up. Congratulations Keith!

youth program update

I hope everyone has enjoyed this long hot summer!

After a couple of false starts we were finally able to get the new kitchen floor installed. Over the course of several days, while construction and clean up occurred, we continued to serve meals with the help of some community partners and a little creativity. Both the Hot Lunch program and the Summer Safe Haven program were business as usual. Cameron Kitchen provided over 1100 meals in 7 days while the kitchen was inaccessible.

We want to extend a thank you to several individuals and groups that helped us during the construction process. Jim Hughes, Rochester Americorps, Mark’s Pizzeria, Zweigles, Paradigm Environmental and all of our volunteer delivery drivers and workers. It was a difficult week, but we made it through!

A special thank you to the Rochester Area Community Foundation and Third Presbyterian Church’s East Avenue Grocery Run Team for funding the project.

It’s been a very busy summer. In the past three months, we served 11,278 meals. We helped over 140 families with emergency food from the food pantry. Included in that count are the kids in the Summer Safe Haven program every day, with several field trips and a carnival thrown in for good measure.

While it may seem far off, SNOW is right around the corner and with that comes different and unique challenges but we are excited for the Fall to come!

As always, thank you to all of our volunteers and to those who bring deliveries every day. Without your support we couldn’t do what we do.

Dave DiNapoli, Kitchen Manager

Another successful Summer Safe Haven Program at Cameron has come and gone. For the first time, Cameron switched to a full day program. This allowed for us to take the kids on more field trips, and have more time for daily academics.

Some of our fieldtrip highlights included: hiking the trails at Mendon Ponds Park, visiting Letchworth State Park, and taking the Sam Patch Boat Tour down the Erie Canal! Over the summer the kids practiced their math facts every day, and journaled to reflect on their day’s activity. The kids also met in reading groups daily, reading books such as The BFG and The Hoboken Chicken Emergency. We were also able to do yoga weekly and had music and art regularly. The kids were able to do fun experiments while participating in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities. A representative from Cornell Cooperative Extension visited Cameron once a week to bring these lessons to our kids.

The youth staff is now gearing up to begin our After School Program. During the first two weeks of program, our Academic Coordinator will be testing all of our kids to determine their math and reading levels. This will help us learn how to best help

our kids, and make as much progress with them as possible throughout the school year. Stay tuned for donation requests of books that we will be using in our reading groups.

Lastly, on August 30-31 Cameron was able to distribute 300 book bags full of supplies to children in our community who could not afford to purchase their own. Thank you to UR Wilson Day Students who sort and organize the supplies every year, and to everyone who donated new bags and supplies to make it possible for Cameron to do this! We will still be accepting donations of book bags, school supplies, and uniforms so that we can continue to help kids throughout the year. Keep an eye out for all of the school items that will go on clearance in a few weeks!
