54th year Br. 7

September 2017

BIG SIR—Ken Kauer

It was nice to hear all about Su-pervisor Dennis Rodoni’s work for Marin County and all the projects he and his fel-low supervisors are working on now and for the future. The supervisors plan for making 2018 the Year of the Seniors in Marin seems interesting so we will see what the future has in store for us. Like most things political talk is cheap but it’s ac-tion that gets the job done. It’s nice to know that we are moving forward for our senior population.

On August 8th I, along with representatives from our other four Marin branches, went to the annual meeting. In attendance were 121 branches out of 154 state-wide. We voted to amend two by-laws. One says that all elected officers and all regional directors now constitute the state Board and shall have voting rights on all matters before the Board. This was rewritten because of the new consolidation of regions and areas.

The second by-law change added another stand-ing committee to the state list. The new commit-tee is for bocce and it currently has only two members but a call was put out for more partici-pants.

A third proposal was to amend the process for electing state officers. This was hotly contested, with some thinking that it was poorly written, oth-ers thinking it favored one candidate over others. After 45 minutes of emotional and sometimes dramatic speeches, a call was made to vote and the proposal was soundly defeated. The thing I found very interesting was that even the propo-nents of the proposal voted against it. So it now goes back to committee to be rewritten and re-

presented at next year’s meeting.

The meeting was well worth the trip and we met many other Big Sirs from around the state. Our shout-out this month is to Bob Rigler, our

Bob Rigler, Secretary

Minutes of the Executive Committee meeting of July 27, 2017:

Secretary: Minutes of the June 29th meeting as published in the Horologium were approved.

Treasurer: AI Wuthnow reported that current cash balance is $6,398.88 and the prior year balance was $6,135.66 on 7/31/2016. Board approved a motion to allow new members who join after Sept. 1 to have their dues extend through Dec. 31st of the following year (equivalent to a 4-month “bonus”). Treasure’s report approved.

Little Sir: Terry reviewed our speakers for the coming meetings. The September meeting will need a new speaker due to scheduling conflicts. Bob Bundy will help Terry fill that vacancy.

Activities: Ted's first item was the theatre trip to see 'The American in Paris" on Sept. 14th. There are 4 seats in the Orchestra section which must be filled by “volunteers” or else assigned, perhaps by last-to-pay attendees. Ted said there is little interest in “Day at the Races” from our branch, but only 4 people need attend to reach the mini-mum. Ted will announce one more time at next week’s general meeting. George reviewed menu options for the 10/11 lunch at Celia’s. Board ap-proved a flat $15 pp prepayment for food (drinks to be paid separately by attendees). Signups will take place at general meeting and also via email blast.

Membership: Maynard reported that even though we have added new members in the past 1 1/2 years, our attrition is greater than our additions. Ralph mentioned that Branch 7 has one of the oldest average ages of all SIR branches. Robby moved to drop Jim Hurst from our active rolls (approved by Board).

Wine Club: Fred reported on the next tasting which will take place at VINES Wine Shop (San Anselmo) on August 22nd, 1-3 pm. $20pp.

Sunshine & Shadows: There will be a celebration for Andy on 9/22 at Corte Madera Community Center. Andy’s family encourages SIR friends to attend.

There are 15 August birthdays. Bob B will order more wine. Bob Rigler and Doug Good will collect for tickets and raffle at Aug. 3rd meeting.

El Once de Octubre

Do you Like Mexican food? Do you like a good margarita to go with it but you never go for Cinco de Mayo because it’s too crowded?

Well Sirs, Branch 7 is celebrating El Once de Octubre! That’s right, Wednesday, October 11, let’s join together for lunch, 12: 00 pm at Celia’s, San Rafael, so save the date.

We will all gather there and have a ball in the semi-private room in the back. Bring spouses and friends. It will be a sit down lunch with four items to choose from. You will choose your food selection when you sign up and prepay. Drinks will be no host, payable at the event. Seating is limited to 70 so sign up with the form at the monthly lunch.

More information will be coming forward at the SIRS luncheons and in the future Horologium. Plan now and Save the Date!
