ADVENT HOPEThe Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as the Synoptic Gospels. The word Synoptic comes from the Greek words ‘syn’ meaning together and ‘optic’ meaning sight.      When recording the life, death and resurrection of Our Lord these Gospels record many events in the same way and often with the same sequence of events, narrative arrangement and sentence structure. So much so that we say that they were seen with the same eye, syn-optic-ally.    In a way, Advent is a synoptic season. We try to look at the whole of our salvation history with one eye.  Advent is about the past actions of God, his promises and covenants with his people; His entering time when He took on flesh and was born in Bethlehem.  It’s about the present and the New and Eternal Covenant He establishes with us during the Mass when we truly receive His Body and Blood.  It is also about the future when God the Son will come again on a ‘cloud’ with power and glory to judge the living and the dead. Advent is also a good time for us to think syn-optic-ally about our own life. The past, the present and the future…..Where have I come from? Where am I going? Who am I? …When we truly discover the ‘self’ we discover God, in whose image and likeness we are made.   Wishing you all a wonderful and reflective journey through this Advent season of grace and hope.  ‘Come, Lord Jesus’.
