The demands of these ministries of the Word could have turned us all into “Marthas”, busy and upset about many things (Lk 10:41). We could have fallen into the trap of salvation by works rather than faith. But the Lord kept calling us to sit at His feet in Eucharistic adoration.

This scripture passage was confirmed as a prophetic description of Father’s spiritual life and ministry. (See also Jer. 17: 7-8)

CO-WORKER CORNERANNOUNCEMENT

For some of the local couples, the Presentation Ministries’ annual Marriage Retreat began the night before at the Holy Spirit Center in Cincinnati. Fr. Nathan Cromely was the speaker and entitled the evening: “A Date with Fr. Nate.” He was engaging, funny, and drove the point home with a call to action. Giving personal examples, he recalled his dad coming home from work in his blue mechanic uniform. The first thing his father did was to find his mother and kiss her right on the lips. It is amazing how simple and powerful this action is. Using this strategy, we have seen great results. Another point Fr. Nathan made was the need for men to be the spiritual leaders in their home. Gently, he addressed the husbands, “I get how you are humble and think you are not worthy to lead the prayer. But the problem is your ten-year-old son follows your example. Four words men, ‘Bless us, oh Lord.’ She [your wife] will take it from there.” He didn’t let the women off the hook either. He said, “I don’t want to be too hard on my sisters because that’s not nice. But if you have been complaining about the same thing for the past ten years, change your tactic, woman!” En-couragingly, his parting remarks were, “Ladies, on your way home ask your husband to share his dreams with you. You will be amazed.” But on the way home we got caught up in talking about something else and I never heard my husband, Tony’s, dreams. The next morning we headed to the Presentation Ministries’ annual Marriage Retreat in Peebles, Ohio, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Discipleship Center. For me the two-hour drive felt like ten minutes. Amazingly, I wished it were longer. I used to complain about the drive but now I look forward to it. It is long enough to leave the business of home at home, to get away from the many distractions, and to focus on the important things like our marriage. We made a point of praying a rosary for our many intentions and preparing our hearts for whatever the Lord would reveal. The countryside we drove through invited us to a quieter, slower pace. I could breathe deeply.As we sat down for the first talk I asked, “Who’s giving the talk? The lady sitting next to me said, “I am.” I asked, “What’s the topic?” She said, “Forgiveness, and it’s going to be terrible.” I said, “How can a talk on forgiveness be terrible?” Briefly, I shared with her what the Lord had been telling me, “It’s not about you being perfect. The Lord will work through your mistakes. Get up and make some mistakes!”

She smiled and got up and gave one of the greatest witnesses on forgiveness I have ever heard. Her words were real, honest, vulnerable, painful, inspiring, and encouraging. My husband Tony said it brought tears to his eyes.

Her name was Nancy. “How important do you think forgiveness is? On a scale of 1 to 10, where does forgive-ness stand?” she asked. Being a student of Fr. Al Lauer, I knew the answer, “Number one!” I responded. She went on to reveal the depth of forgiveness and the hurdles she overcame by the grace and faithfulness of God. Nancy and her husband, Larry, had eight children. Larry had been a Marine in Vietnam. He had been wound-ed and received the Purple Heart award. She shared her journey telling us she had built a wall protecting herself from emotional pain but not allowing her to truly live her Catholic faith. She had her faith, her church, her Catholic friends, but was emotionally estranged from her husband. On a retreat at Steubenville, she heard a priest give a talk on forgive-ness. He encouraged, “Tear down that wall!” Initially, she thought, “Oh, this is good!” Suddenly, she began to experi-ence headache and stomachache. She had to leave the room. Feeling physically ill, she insisted someone take her home immediately. They reminded her that it was a five hour bus ride and no one was going to take her home immediately. She began to realize these were the symptoms of living a divided life.

That night Nancy met a woman she knew. Interestingly, the woman preferred the Latin rite and didn’t know why she was at a charismatic conference. They sat up half the night talking. The woman had PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). For the first time, it occurred to Nancy that her husband may be suffering from this too. Maybe his attacks were not personal. Maybe it was PTSD. With this realization, she began to see the need and possibility of for-giveness. A softening of Nancy’s heart began. The Lord continued to pour out His grace. Eventually, Larry had his own personal healing and conversion. There was great reason for hope as God worked miracles in their marriage and family. But two years ago, Nancy and Larry were confronted with the news of Larry’s lung cancer. God continued to provide. It was a time of grace. They lived his last 18 months together caring for one another, forgiving each other, going to daily mass, and giving encouragement to those they met. It was the honeymoon they never had. Even though it was difficult to see Larry, who had been a strong Marine, become a weak, frail, dependent man, Nancy said it was a privilege to care for him. It was a precious time of union of heart and mind. Nancy’s husband died seven months ago. Nancy’s story was a powerful witness of love and forgiveness by the grace and faithfulness of God. She shared a mes-sage of hope. “Expect miracles in your marriage and your family,” she insisted. I wondered how many of us build a “Jesus wall” thinking we are “good Catholics.” From what am I protecting myself? How does this lack of vulnerability make me less authentically Catholic, less able to experience God’s love and mercy? At one point, Nancy said, “Life is messy.” I could hear the echo of, “It’s not about being perfect. Let me work through you. Make some mistakes.” Nancy set the tone for the rest of the day. We were blessed with Mass and Confession, talks, and witnesses. We concluded the retreat with an absolutely scrumptious homemade candle light dinner! On the drive home, I asked Tony what his dreams were. I was amazed.

The Co-Workers will need a new leader as of November 2019, because John (and Beth) Dunn will no longer be serving in that position. After serving four years, John has decided to move on. They both enjoyed serving in this role and John will continue to cover administrative tasks until a new leader rises up.

Perhaps you or someone you know would like to fill this leadership position. Here’s what it involves: The Co-work-er Ministry Leader:

1. Helps discern the theme and agenda for the annual Co-Worker/HBC Retreat;

2. Meets with the core team at least once a year to assess the ministry and determine new initiatives. (During the past four years this meeting has taken place at the Bible Insti-tute to accommodate out-of-town core team members.)

3. Responds by phone and mail to people want-ing to join the Co-Workers;

4. Attends two Members’ Meetings per year, (as required of a leader who lives locally) and reports on the ministry once per year;

5. Mails prayer requests to a ministry interces-sor;

6. Organizes the praying for each Co-Worker by name among the core team);

7. Writes an annual commitment letter to all Co-Workers each November;

8. Suggests topics for PM newsletter column- Co-Worker Corner.

Please contact the PM office or John Dunn (606)748-0605 with questions or with a response to the Lord’s call to volunteer. Thank you.

school boy I’ve known for eight years — Gifford “Bam Bam” Whyte. He has been pounding on the door of op-portunity his whole life. Bam Bam graduated from high school in June. Gifford was born into poor circumstances. His father was absent and his mother, Ms. Pansy, a “higgler,” works hard to support her family. I frequently see her pushing her cart to her favorite spot on the “beach road” where she sells fruit and sodas. Ms. Pansy has instilled wonderful values in her children, and Bam Bam did well to catch them…

Thanks to you, we are changing lives. We’ve helped hundreds ofchildren and their families overcome edu-cational challenges. Each day, monetary problems, transportation hurdles and a lack of resources prove too much for families to handle so kids just don’t go to school. Through it all, Get Kids To School program was there to give Gifford, and many other disadvantaged children, the financial and moral support needed to fulfill the dream of graduating from high school…”

Praise Reports: Daily Bread Podcasts

PADRE PIO HBC SPONSORED OLGDC REREAT ON THE GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

DAILY BREAD PODCAST:“HIS MESSAGE IS ALWAYS CLEAR AND

EASY TO FOLLOW.”I have been listening to Presentation Ministries for a year now. I came across Father Al's podcast during a very hard time in my life. I was raised Catholic but became very distant from my faith until I began listening to Father Al. I started by listening to my sister's recommendation of Joseph Price and Joel Olsteen, but I always felt like some-thing was missing. Although they are doing work to help others it didn't impact me like Father Al's Daily Bread. Today, I am getting much better in my faith and wish I could thank Father in person, but I learned he passed many years ago. His work does live on and I am so ap-preciative of all the volunteers that keep his work alive. I can remember feeling so detached at church because the priest’s message just didn't stick with me. My attention was always somewhere else during those times. I had become more fascinated with science and other speakers. Father Al was different! His message is always clear and easy to follow. In his simplicity I find hope and peace and am directed to the Bible to learn more. He brought me closer to my faith and I am so grateful for his memory and life’s work. S. T.

“HE WAS ‘CRACKING ME UP’TALKING ABOUT TOBIT”

I found Fr Al when I searched Old Testament, Catholic on my podcast app 5 years ago. One day he was cracking me up talking about Tobit. I wanted to see who he is, so I searched his name on the internet only to learn he had died years before. I mourned him for days. When I asked for his prayers to help me get to daily mass, he comes through every time, no surprise!Thank you for all you do. God Bless, Suzanne

God Sent!

I wished I met Father. How you guys do this broadcast with him in heaven is just God sent! Amazing it sounds like he is alive today! He must have been busy doing sound “bytes” before he passed. I listen daily to the All Podcast and my favorite is Daily Bread... Pray for me to find HIS (God’s) purpose. I am discerning HIS will to serve HIM!! I evangelize when and where ever I can. HE has given me the gift to speak and to motivate and I do it with HIS grace, HIS spirit in me with “mucho gusto”! Ken – Texas Bound

I am overwhelmed and so very grateful for the wisdom I receive DAILY by reading the reflections (One Bread, One Body) you write for the daily readings. Our brothers and sisters from Ohio’s northeast have the gift of endurance, toughened by cold weather and hard winters. They take in stride the long 4-5 hour drive from Madison, OH northeast of Cleveland to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Discipleship Center (OLGDC). (Quite a contrast to some of us in southern Ohio who find a mere hour and a half drive taxing!) The ministry team at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Discipleship Center is grateful for the many spiritual gifts which the Padre Pio HBC brought to the retreat.

Deacon Ken Meade and Guadlupe Bible College’s president, Shelley Meade, are the leaders of the

Padre Pio HBC together with Co-leader Gayle Carroll.

In addition to great teachings, the day was filled with powerful praise and worship led by Ken Posavad (right) and Joe Slyke (left). This past October, 2019 Ken and Joe brought another great “material gift”, the donation of a professional sound system, which they obtained from the Catholic Renewal Ministries in Cleveland for Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel in Peebles. It enhances the liturgical readings, homilies, and worship during Mass and other liturgical celebrations. Truly the Padre Pio HBC has given to the Lord through this ministry without counting the cost!

Participants enjoy talks given by members of the Padre Pio HBC.

The photo above shows some components of the sound system in the background of the photo: a large speaker on the wall behind Joe and the control panel on the floor. In addition to these, but not in the photo, the system includes a number of microphones, i.e. for the podium and the musicians as well as a wireless mic for the celebrant.

A FAR FLUNG PM WORKERI’m Julie Black, living in Bakersfield, CA, and have been helping Presentation Ministries (PM) with their newsletter since the Fall 2014 issue. I work from my home and we communicate and transmit via email. I associate most closely with Marianne Lander, who I must say is a dream to work with.

I am married to Ron, my husband of 48 years, and we have our precious pup-py, Maddie. We raised two grown children who gave us four grandchildren, now married. We will soon be great-grandparents and thrilled at the prospect of having new babies in the family. I retired from my church, as accountant, approximately seven years ago. I have now switched to volunteer status at my church. That gives me time for other non-profits which have always held a warm place in my heart.

My journey with PM started one day when I saw a blurb on their website stating PM was looking for someone to take over laying out their newsletter, I applied and connected with Chris Jasek. I had both professional and personal experience with graphic arts, I was familiar with InDesign software, and sent him samples of my work. I was soon given the position. This current newslet-ter marks fifteen issues I’ve helped publish. I love doing what I can to support this wonderful outreach ministry.

[Editor’s note: With her skills, Julie is a God-send to PM! We thank the Lord for her “yes!” to the Lord.]

MAY THE SOULS OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED REST IN PEACE

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In the past month we have been surrounded by the overwhelming glory of God in His gift of Christian Community as we mourned, but also celebrated my daughter Gina's entrance into eternal life with God and all His Holy Ones! Gina was a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Parish in Peebles, OH and of PM’s Our Lady’s Holy Mountain HBC with her husband Ray Fox and son Jesse. She served for thirty years as a registered nurse and nurse supervisor until she was disabled in 2014 by a rare neurological syndrome called Leigh’s Disease which eventually took her life on January 3, 2020. Gina entered eternal life with Jesus on the feast of The Holy Name of Jesus.

We especially want to thank the parishioners of St Mary-Queen of Heaven, and Presentation Ministries’ members, who enveloped our family with their lov-ing presence; and we are very grateful for the beautiful liturgy and music during Mass, and the many prayers, Masses, flowers, cards, food, gifts and hospitality!

Gratefully in Jesus,Vivian Jansen, Ray Fox, Jesse, Nichole Nace, the Jansen and Fox Families

“Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ, Who brings us out of darkness into Your Glorious Light!”

Fr Al Lauder: A Life "Poured Out Like a Libation" Continued from Page 1

2020 Spring and Summer Events

As part of his priestly ministry, Father traveled extensively to evangelize personally by preaching in parish missions, retreats, conferences, and Bible Institutes throughout the US, Canada and in Belize. He truly lived the words of St. Paul to Timothy: “I charge you to preach the word, to stay with the task whether convenient or inconvenient – correct-ing, reproving, appealing – constantly teaching and never losing patience.” He was a living example of a worker who was “steady and self-possessed”, who “put up with hardship”, performed his work as an evangelist, and fulfilled his ministry (See 2 Tim 4:2-5). Father Al promised God if anyone asked him to preach he would not say no.Since 1986, the demand for OBOB copies has grown and spread across the USA. In the early years before donations became numerous, and the monthly budget was tight, one of the greatest supporters of OBOB prophesied that this little publication would provide the basis and financial support for the other ministries. Today this prophetic vision is a reality.

Even after his death, Father Al’s teaching via the OBOB and Daily Bread ministries reach readers and listeners beyond counting. OBOB is published in foreign countries, translated and printed in Spanish, is available on the PM website, and the Laudate APP. People from Australia, Russia, China, South America, England, and many places throughout the world write to thank PM for spreading the “Good News”. These readers and listeners write to express deep gratitude to PM for bringing the truth of Jesus through the media, especially the Daily Bread Radio/Podcasts, and OBOB. These ministries of the Word are saving lives, souls, and marriages; they truly do reach to “the ends of the earth”!

During his last few days of life, Father continued to preach from his bed, as friends and associates gathered around to learn from him and support him with prayer. He evan-gelized until his death on October 13, 2002. God continues to fulfill Father Al’s vision through Presentation Ministries, which he founded and which became a Lay Association of the Faithful in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, OH on March 16, 1984. Through much prayer and sacrifice and through the power of the Holy Spirit, PM continues to spread the Good News “to the ends of the earth”. Members of PM find ways to bring Father Al’s teachings from one technology level to the next as media develops.

Besides Father Al’s archived teachings, new teachings are brought forth from PM. Paul Egan was chosen and mentored by Father Al in the 1990s to submit teachings and to serve as his chief editor. Since the time of Father Al’s passing, Paul has continued as chief editor and submits the majority of the new teachings found in OBOB. Like his mentor, Father Al, and his patron, St. Paul, Paul Egan’s life is also being “poured out like a libation” for the spread of the Gospel.

When Father Al realized his time on earth might be shortened by his cancer, he passed to Deacon Wayne and Darlene Davis the mantle of teaching via the Bible Telephone Line. They enlisted Jon Smith, from their Home Based Community, to share this task. At the close of Deacon Wayne’s life, he asked Deacon Ken Meade to continue in his stead. These faithful ones prayerfully provide Eucharistic messages each day.
