Saturday Church Services
during Advent
Starting Nov. 29—Our Saturday evening
worship services will be moving into the
sanctuary for the season of Advent, as we
continue to explore and experiment with what
God desires for us and from us. Come worship
the Lord with us in the warm glow of the
Christmas tree lights and the candles on the
Advent wreath. We will still be “unplugged”
and easy-going, always welcoming and growing
together. Join us!
SERVICES:
A Family-friendly Story-time Service at 6:00 PM A service of good ol’ fashioned and familiar Christmas
carols and a special Christmas Eve story-time for kids
of all ages. The children will be actively engaged in
helping with the service, and we’ll finish with a joyful
singing of “Silent Night” by candlelight!
A Service of Carols & Candlelight at 8:00 PM The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the
Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in short Bible
readings interspersed with the singing of Christmas
carols, hymns and choir music. Of course, we’ll finish
with a joyful singing of “Silent
Night” by candlelight!
Choir Cantata
Sunday December 7, 9:30am (No Saturday night service or Sunday
11am contemporary)
The plateau community is invited to a special
presentation of “Rejoice Believers,” a joyful
Christmas Cantata presented by Calvary’s music
ministry. A time for fellowship and refreshments
will follow. Invite someone to join you
for this special worship service.

Well let me wish you all a warm and wonderful December along with Advent Greet-
ings! When you read this, we will have just held our November annual congregational
meeting to elect new elders and deacons. I am pretty sure that we will not be electing a
full slate of church officers and at-large members of the Congregational Nominating
Committee. So, I want to gently but firmly encourage all of you to ask of the Lord, "Are
you calling me to leadership at Calvary?"
In a congregation the size of Calvary, it is easy to think that someone else will answer
the need or call. But in fact, our Lord may truly be calling you. I have instructed our
congregational nominating committee to continue seeking and discerning whom it is that
God wants to be on the Session and Deacon boards. Hopefully, we will be electing any
remaining elders or deacons or at-large Nominating Committee members at our annual congregational meeting
in January (on the 25th), so that each board has its full complement of 12 officers and the Nominating
Committee is at full power as well.
Let me also encourage you to read over the pages of “The Caller” so that you are fully informed of the many
and various ministries and events taking place through Advent and Christmastide. Please plan on inviting folks
to join you in attending the Choir Cantata presentation of “Rejoice Believers” on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 9:30 AM.
We will only have the one worship service that weekend —and please note the different time!
So be on the lookout at church for postcard-sized invitations that you may use for your friends, family,
neighbors and coworkers. This special time of year provides a wonderful opportunity to ask someone to join
you in attending one of our holiday events, especially the Christmas Eve worship services.
Let me leave you with John 1:1-5, 10-14:
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the
beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was
life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came
to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed
in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human
decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We
have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Advent blessings as we prepare to celebrate the Word made flesh,
Results of October’s FAITH IN ACTION SUNDAY
Yeah! all the Calvary family who participated in or prayed for our FIA projects on October 26!
Cards for military members were made, Prayer Bear Squares were sewn, songs were sung and eight homes out
in Crystalaire were weeded, pruned, and cleaned. The Deacons provided soup that warmed the tummy (which
was great after working in the rain) and a good time was had. Thanks to all and think about April FIA projects
to show our love to our community. God bless you.

A CULTURE OF BELONGING – PART 1 Coming to youth group for the first time is scary. When a guest walks in the front door of the youth room, they
always stop at the door threshold and survey the room. Everyone’s eyes turn to them wanting to ask “who is
that?” but since nobody wants to be rude, nobody says anything. It’s awkward. It’s unwelcoming. It’s over.
The guest has already decided within that first minute that they aren’t coming back.
Creating a welcoming environment is one of the hardest things to do youth ministry – and ministry in general. I
noticed over the years that I could get guests to come to youth group, but I was having problems getting them
to come back. So here are some things we do now at Calvary Youth Ministries:
Before any students arrive, there is music playing. It makes arrivals less awkward.
When a student walks in the door, a leader greets them by name, whether it’s their first time or 100th time
at youth group. If they’re a guest and we don’t know them, then we introduce ourselves.
We ask them to sign in with their name and phone number. This lets up keep attendance and follow up later
in the week.
After introductions, we ask guests if they know any of our youth group students. If so, we immediately find
that student and let them know their guest is here.
Guests are given a tour by a leader or a student. They are shown the popcorn or food, the table games, and
the fridge. They are offered food and a free pop. Having food or drink in one’s hands makes people
comfortable.
A leader tells them about the evening program so they know what to expect. They’re told, “We start in ___
minutes. Until, then hang out and have fun.” That way they’re not just sitting there wondering what to
do until we start.
If a guest comes without a friend and doesn’t know anybody, then a leader stays with them and chats with
them the whole time, making sure they are never alone.
During our announcements, when I have everybody’s attention, I introduce our guest(s) to the group. It’s a
little awkward for shy people, but it’s better than pretending they’re not there, in my opinion.
When making small groups for discussion, guests are always placed with their friends. And, in general, we
place students in small groups with their friends.
Before a guest leaves, a leader gives them a brochure or refrigerator magnet with our youth group info and
welcomed back at any time.
After a few days, I make a follow up phone call to the kid or parents. I introduce myself, ask how youth
group went for their kid, give them info about our ministry or upcoming events, and get the parents’
email so we can keep them informed.
Stay tuned for part 2, where I’ll talk about birthdays, the big welcome, and the big spiel.
DID YOU KNOW…

gel parties because we had four new

Christian Education News www.calvarypreschurch.org
The Christian Education Ministry Team wishes to thank Paul Jackson who has served as
Church Librarian for nearly ten years. Paul has given countless hours to this volunteer
position, and during his tenure, the size of the church library has grown and the collection
has been well-organized. He has promoted use of the materials with monthly Caller articles,
has arranged for appropriate items to be housed in various places around the church campus,
and has provided carts of books on seasonal and holiday themes. Paul's knowledge of
computerized cataloging/searching tools has enhanced the set-up of the library for the
congregation. Kudos to Paul, for a job well done! We are truly grateful.
We are pleased to announce that Marilyn White will take Paul's place. She has worked as Paul's assistant for
the past year or more, and currently serves on the C.E. team. Marilyn will continue the library
program, providing resources for all ages in our congregation. The church library is in good hands.

WINTER JAM
The Winter Jam Concert, headlined by Hillsong, rocked the Tacoma Dome on Saturday November 15. They
come to the Tacoma Dome every year, and I faithfully attend every year. Back in 2010, I brought one person
– Jen. Nobody else wanted to come. In 2011, only two kids were interested in coming with us; in 2012, four
came with us. This time, I got 41 people to come with. Persistence pays off!
THE BIBLE FROM SCRATCH CLASS ~ THE OLD TESTAMENT CONTINUES Beginning January 4, 2015 and running until February 15 Old Songs for a New Millennium, a study in the Book of Psalms, will give a glimpse into the longest and most comprehensive collection of songs in our scriptures and served as the hymnal for the Nation of Israel. Collected, compiled, and arranged over a long period of time, the
Psalms tells us of God’s work in Creation, redemption, judgment and witness to God’s sovereign love and righteousness. The study focuses on the Psalms as they describe our human condition and God’s response to our songs and prayers. Study guides will be made available for only $5. Sign up sheets will be placed on the information table in the upstairs lobby and wooden table in the Fellowship Hall. The class will be an inspirational way to start the new year leading up to the begin-ning of Lent. Facilitator will be Cherie Murchie.

Session Highlights from the stated meeting on November 10, 2014, your Session Elders:
Discussed and prepared for the Open Forum on Sunday, November 16.
Discussed the 2015 general fund budget — many faith pledges are still needed to help in projecting 2015
giving. If you have not yet turned in your faith pledge please do so.
Discussed and evaluated both the 7:00 PM Saturday evening worship service and the new 11:00 AM con-
temporary worship service. The Calvary congregation is invited to explore and visit our unique Saturday
evening worship in the Fellowship Hall.
Approved Angela Taix’s request for a letter of transfer to White Salmon United Methodist church.
Approved the 2014 Advent Conspiracy fundraiser with proceeds going to our Full Bellies community meal
and the Kids Food backpack program in Enumclaw..
Please keep your Session Elders in your prayers as they faithfully and diligently work to lead this congrega-
tion in being a healthy family of faith.
We would like to thank Pastor Cindy for her calls and concerns. Also a special
thanks for the food, flowers, cards and phone calls. We are grateful to have such
a wonderful church family. Dick & Jeanette VanWettering
We wish to thank everyone in our church family for their prayers, concerns
and support during Jim's recent health issue. We especially appreciate the volun-
teer drivers transporting him to the treatment center for dialysis. Praise the
Lord! It appears that his full recovery will be favorable.

Library Report -2014
Over the course of the year 2014 we deleted some 70 nursery titles from our catalog and more than 100
videos. Even so, donations and purchases of books brought in a total of 129 new items to our library. This gives
us a very large library of 2190 items. And we have good numbers of books circulating for a small congregation;
around 50 books circulating during any given month.
We had an important donation of items we did not have from Max Manowski of Bible literature and com-
mentaries.
Recently we’ve added the biblical works and the following titles; take a look. They will be on the cart in
the Narthex unless checked out.
Questioning the Bible: 11 Major Challenges to the Bible's Authority
Distortion: How the New Christian Left is Twisting the Gospel and Damaging the Faith
Faith Undone: The emerging church - a new reformation or an end-time deception
Three Testaments: Torah, Gospel, and Quran Paperback – January 2, 2014 [this is a study supplement to
a very expensive book which we don’t have, but will be useful for those interested in comparisons.]
The New Complete Works of Josephus: rev. & expanded [Includes harmony of Greek and English num-
bering systems, table of Jewish weights and measures, Old Testament text parallels, twenty full-page illustra-
tions, and an updated index.]
You all should be proud of such an excellent collection for our small congregational size, which tends
towards medium sized according to research. From the Barna Report: Overall, the research found that the typi-
cal Protestant church has 89 adults in attendance during an average weekend. In total, 60% of Protestant
churches have 100 or fewer adults on a typical weekend, while slightly less than 2% have 1000 or more adults.
Examining the figures in terms of where adults attend, however, the statistics show that about four out of ten
church-going adults (41%) go to churches with 100 or fewer adults while about one out of eight church-going
adults (12%) can be found in churches of 1000 or more adults.

It is Christmas time and our Caller articles will span the time from December through January. It is a time when we think about the nativity and then look ahead with anticipation to the New Year, 2015. We will be celebrating Christmas here at Calvary and then looking ahead to the coming of a new pastor. Each year we hear the familiar story of Jesus’ birth. The particular part of that story that causes me to reflect the most is the search that Mary and Joseph go through to find a room. No room in the inn. We can find all levels of meaning in that search. Often we think about ways in which we cannot “make room” in our lives for Jesus and His message. Shopping, wrapping presents, cooking treats, visiting family, sending Christmas cards are all on that list. This year, I have been think-ing about community and specifically the Calvary community. What are the characteristics of a healthy church community that would make it clear that we always have a room, or like the motels say “Vacancy.” The dictionary definition of community goes something like this: a group of persons living in the same place or having particular characteristics in common. Members of a community often see themselves as distinct in some respect from the larger society within which it exists. To some degree that definition fits a church community. The one potential red flag could be just how distinct do we see ourselves in relationship to the community in which we live? If our answer is that we are followers of Christ, that would be valid and hopefully true. However, the way in which we communicate that distinction is crucial to our being perceived as an open community. An author, M. Scott Peck, M.D., has written a book called THE DIFFERENT DRUM: Community Making and Peace.” In his chapter on “The True Meaning of Community,” he includes several characteristics of a well-functioning community. First of all there is an “allness” to community, meaning it is inclusive. All are welcome and all thoughts and feelings are safe to express. It takes a while to develop the trust that this kind of inclusiveness requires. It is a “group of individuals who have learned how to communicate honestly with each other, whose relationships go deeper than their masks of compo-sure, and have developed some significant commitment to ‘rejoice together, mourn together and to delight in each other, make other’s conditions our own.” When I look at these characteristics, it would seem that community would be a safe place for each person who belongs. These are pretty tall orders and it takes work to keep it that way. One thing: community is not is a place where folks always agree. Unity may mean coming to a consensus, but not without hearing and respecting all perspectives. It is a place where we learn to disagree gracefully rather than divide into factions. This has become very important as Calvary explores who we are and how we respond to societal challenges. It will become very important as we adjust to a new pastor and work out some of our unresolved issues. Even with all of this said, from my perspective, Calvary is definitely a community. As we often hear, the family of Cal-vary. People here look out for one another. We give rides to people who need them, we fix food for shut ins, we mourn with those who mourn and we rejoice in our weekly worship. As we enter into the New Year, let’s continue to make room in our inn. We have so much of value to share with others.

Calvary’s Vision (updated 2013)
Calvary Presbyterian Church
is a worshipping family of believers centered in Christ,
led by His Holy Spirit, rooted in God’s Word,
growing in love, branching out in faith
to serve God in our Church, our community
and all around the world.
I am the vine, you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him,
he will bear much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing.
