A Need for Integrated Policies • Food and agriculture are
central to a number of policy issues, including
– Immigration and Labor – Health – National security – Education – Energy – Economy – Natural Resources
• Integrated policy approaches to food, nutrition, agriculture, and economic issues are needed to meet changing demands and conditions

About 40% to 70% of costs in production agriculture are related to labor costs

Transformation: • Establish Innovation Institutes to enhance
connectivity between research, education, and extension systems, and to improve clarity about the complementary roles of the federal government and public-private partnerships in conducting research and implementing solutions.
Strategies: • Small working group developing framework early to
mid-2014; will seek external input • Continue to explore opportunities for alignment
with ongoing USDA REE efforts

Transformation: • Align stakeholder groups around the best strategies
to attract, train, and retain young people to careers in food and agriculture by promoting “career and college readiness” and agricultural literacy.
Strategies: • Support from CHS Foundation to host a series of
convenings with interested parties (e.g. FFA, 4-H, National Ag in the Classroom, eXtension, Foodcorps, Department of Education, DuPont, others) in early-to-mid 2014.

Transformation: • Develop BROAD coalition around aligned messaging
focused on the need to support and strengthen food and agricultural research, education, and extension issues to better support the expansion of innovative mechanisms for information sharing and knowledge exchange among researchers, producers, and other supply chain actors.
Strategies:
• Putting together a strategic plan with outside consultants on creating a 21st Century REE system
• Coordinating with fellow travelers
