    A New Tw ist t o the DNA Form at ion

    The "DNA" fo rmat ion o f 1996 , was so named fo r i t s s im i la r i t y to the

    fami l ia r Deoxyr ibonuc le ic Ac id double he l ix , a b io log ica l codedprogram, fa r more c ompact than any syn the t ic p rogram s to rage

    met hods. How ever , as you w i l l d iscover , th is fo rmat ion a lso

    represents sine waves. A s ine w ave is a g raph , tha t c o r responds to

    na tu ra l back and fo r th movement o r v ib ra t ion . L ike the anc ien t Y in

    and Yang, there is a c onnec t ion be tw een c i rc les and s ine w aves.

    The cheapest w ay to demonst ra t e how th is quarte r sh i f t

    charac t e r is t i c re la tes to a c i rc le , i s to ge t a ho ld o f a toy tha t ' s beenknow n fo r decades as an Etch-a-sketch. The Etc h-a -ske t ch a l lows you

    to p lo t des ired pa t te rns on i t s sc reen , by tu rn ing i t s ve r t i ca l and

    hor izon ta l con t ro l knobs . Turning t he knobs back and fo rth in smooth

    mot ions as per t he charac t e r is t i c , resu l t in a c i rc le being p lo t ted .

    A device ca l l ed an oscilloscope, can be used to p lo t e lec t r i ca l w avessuch as the a l te rna t ing cur ren t s ine wave . More impor tan t ly , the

    osc i l loscope can be used as an accura te E tch-a -ske tch , be ing un-

    e f fec t ed by human er ro r . Connect ing t w o s ine w aves to the ver t i ca l

    and hor izon ta l inputs o f an osc i l loscope , aga in, as per the

    charac t e r is t i c , p lo ts an acc ura te c i rc le on i t s sc reen .

    The osc i l loscope , l i ke the E tch-a -ske tch , combines the two s ine

    waves a t r igh t -ang les to p roduce a c i rc le . Drawing t hese waves a t

    r igh t -ang les t o each o ther , show how po ints on one cor respond topo in ts on the other, as w e l l as the c i rc le . The tw o w aves cor respond

    to t he 360 degrees o f a c i rc le , and fo rm the bas is for a b ranch o f

    ma themat i cs ca l l ed trigonometry.
