INTRODUCTION
VanoverberghiaMerr.iscurrentlycomprisedofonlytwospeciesnamely V. sepulchreiMerr.fromthePhilippinesandV. sasakiana Funak.&H.OhashifromTaiwan(ZingiberaceaeResourceCentre2018).Thetypespeciesofthegenus,V. sepulchrei, is known to be restricted within Northern Luzon to the provinces of MountainProvince(typelocality),Benguet,andIfugao(Funa-koshi&Ohashi2000).Herbariumspecimensandphotographspostedonline(e.g.,Co’sDigitalFloraofthePhilippines:www.philippineplants.org),however,documentthatV. sepulchrei also occursintheprovincesofAntique,Capiz,Quezon,NegrosOc-cidental,Rizal,andSorsogon.RecentexaminationofherbariummaterialandphotographsidentifiedasV. sepulchrei revealed that populations from the latter provinces and some populations fromIfugaoandMountainProvincemayrepresentaseparatetaxon.Toinvestigatefurtherwhetherthesepopulationsaredis-tinct from V. sepulchrei, new vegetative and flowering material wascollectedfromsomeoftheabovementionedprovinces. After comparing these to the protologue of V. sepulchrei and specimensincludingtypes, thisstudyconfirmsthepresenceofaseparatespecieswhichisdescribedandillustratedbelow.Specimensseenonlyasdigital imageavailableonline(e.g.,plants.jstor.org)aredenotedwithanasterisk(*).Forthecon-servationstatusofthenewspecies,theextentofoccurrence(EOO)andareaofoccupancy(AOO)werecalculatedusingtheGeospatial ConservationAssessment Tool (GeoCAT)(Bachman et al. 2011; http://.geocat.kew.org).These datawere then compiled to determine the conservation status of the newspeciesusingtheInternationalUnionforConservationofNature(IUCN)criteria(IUCN2016).Theassessmentisunderreviewandwillbeavailableathttp://www.iucnredlist.org/afterApril2019.Akeytothespeciesaswellasadistributionmapof Vanoverberghiaareprovided.
