Background
• 2004 Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act – LEAs to establish LWP by SY 2006
• 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act – Section 204: Local School Wellness Policy
Implementation
• Have more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables
• Include only fat-free and low-fat types of milk
• Have less sodium (salt) and solid fats
• Are balanced meals with “right-size” portions for children

Creating Sustainable Change Anne Arundel County Public Schools – 1998
Team Nutrition Grant Tooty Fruity Veggie Weggie Grant
Partnership between that health department and the school system to pilot fruit and vegetable tasting events and physical activities in four schools.
A small but positive change was seen in fruit and vegetable consumption and reported physical activity when the pre and post-test data were compared. Based on the success of the pilot program, the Anne Arundel County Department of Health funded an expanded program for Fiscal Year 2000 and 2001
