When we fi rst learned of the 12-acre woodland that would become Turtle Creek Preserve, we were pretty excited. It had all the elements of a great conservation project.

It’s a beautiful piece of land that boasts high-quality woods and wetlands, and it is located in New Buffalo Township—an area at high risk for development. Moreover the landowner, a friend of Chikaming Open Lands and conservation advocate, wanted to see it protected as a natural area. And perhaps most exciting, it’s located right next door to the New Buffalo Elementary School—so it could become a wonderful outdoor classroom for the children attending school there.

As it turns out, the surrounding community was pretty enthusiastic too. After the landowner granted a generous price reduction on the property, a group of neighbors, community leaders and businesses came together to raise nearly $60,000 in just fi ve short months.

This, along with funds previously granted from The Pokagon Fund, allowed us to acquire the property, which is now open to the public for hiking, birdwatching and other recreation. And it’s a pristine natural area full of new discoveries ready to be explored by the schoolchildren next door—and of course, the child in all of us!

A NewNature Preserve

In an ongoing scientifi c study being conducted on one of our preserves, we’ve found

3 massasauga rattlesnakes (one that we think was pregnant!). It’s an important discovery, as the massasauga is federally listed as a threatened species.

In May, we released more than 1,000 Galerucella beetles at 10 locations within the Galien River Marsh in New Buffalo. The beetles act as a natural invasive plant control mechanism—they eat purple loosestrife, a pervasive invader found in the marsh.

In partnership with the Village of Michiana, we preserved 11 acres of critical dune and lakeshore on Lake Michigan.

Along that fl yway, we have protected nearly 240 acres of natural open space, providing habitat for birds to rest and feed along their way.

Approximately 300 species of migratory birds use the fl yway along the Lake Michigan shoreline during their spring and fall journeys.

More than 300 friends and members came together for the 2016 Barn Benefi t—the highest attendance ever for our fi rst Benefi t held on a property we have protected.

140 local schoolchildren came out to Robinson Woods to explore, play and care for the land through the Mighty Acorns program.

45 business partners supported our efforts, working together to make our community better.

With River Valley Elementary 5th graders, we planted 300 milkweed plants at Robinson Woods to help enhance monarch butterfl y habitat.

“Guys, GUYS!! Over here, look what I found!”

Take a stroll through Robinson Woods Preserve, and you’re likely to hear the familiar woodland sounds… birds singing, leaves rustling in the canopy above… but now you may hear something new: children laughing, playing, and calling each other over to see the salamander they’ve discovered in a hollowed out log.

In 2016, we partnered with River Valley Elementary School to launch the Mighty Acorns, an environmental education program that includes a classroom curriculum and fi eld study trips that we lead at our Robinson Woods and Flynn Woods Preserves. It’s part of a focused

effort to get our children outside, engage them with the environment around them, and develop within them a lifelong love of nature.

It’s quite a remarkable thing: get them out into the woods, and shy kids come alive; distracted kids become focused; and disinterested kids become engrossed in what they are doing. The transformation is almost immediate.

It’s a great reminder of why it is so important to protect the landscapes of this area: so that they will remain in their natural state for future generations of children to enjoy in the same way these kids are.

With our Annual Report, we refl ect on some of our accomplishments in 2016 – acquiring the Turtle Creek Preserve, kicking off the Mighty Acorns program – as well as our challenges – the unexpected passing of former Executive Director Chris Thompson affected us all. However, we also look to the future. How can we have a positive impact on the community? How will we continue to be successful in the years to come?

We believe the answer lies in the idea of “community conservation”. Community conservation strives to incorporate the strengths of a land trust with the needs expressed by the community – to reconnect people to nature and the land, to connect people to people, and to provide a lasting and meaningful impact. This philosophy broadens support for land preservation within a community and creates more sustainable organizations and partnerships.

Over the past few years, Chikaming Open Lands has worked to integrate these ideas into our mission and goals. We are incorporating the needs of the community for land preservation, providing programs and events to reconnect people to nature, and developing partnerships with municipalities, conservation organizations, and other stakeholders to have a greater impact. And we are able to do these things thanks to the support of members and friends like you. Whether you support us by donating to our cause, or volunteering for a Stewardship Day, or connecting with friends and neighbors to share the work we are doing, you make our work possible. Thank you.

Sincerely,Ryan J. PostemaExecutive Director
