EcoRunTM is a locomotive performance system used to maximise energy efficiency by advising the driver of the optimal power notch setting to complete their haulage task.

EcoRunTM is an innovative product developed by UGL which is unique to the international rail market. It can be used to support locomotive operator performance while improving both their cost and environmental performance. EcoRunTM can be fitted to any class of locomotive to assist the driver in obtaining optimal efficiency on any rail path.

Locomotive and train data and up-to-date track inputs are loaded into UGL’s patented simulation tool, Traper2TM, which defines and designs the driving path required to optimise the haulage task. This information is used by EcoRunTM to provide the driver with instructions on how to optimise the locomotive’s fuel consumption through a single ‘plug and play’ tablet. This tablet can be mounted within the operator cab in a position that is suitable for safe operation of the locomotive.

One of the key benefits of EcoRunTM is its versatility. Drivers can remove the EcoRunTM tablet from the lead locomotive at the completion of a run and transfer it to a new lead locomotive ready for the next journey. Due to its versatility, there is no requirement to have an EcoRunTM tablet per locomotive which saves cost during the capital purchase phase. EcoRunTM can provide near real time fuel usage data allowing the driver and operators to see the impact of their actions on the fuel usage of the locomotive.

PROBLEM

Traditionally train operators have had limited ability to access real time performance information directly from a train and combine this information with a driver advice system to enable them to operate their assets more effectively and efficiently.

The inability of being able to access this train performance information in real time prevents the operator from acting quickly on performance and efficiency issues as they are encountered.

SOLUTION

The development of UGL’s in-house simulation software package, Traper2, provided the platform for a driver advice system, now with faster processing capability, enables EcoRunTM to continuously provide path solutions to any train journey.

PRODUCT

EcoRunTM is a driver advice and communications platform that is able to connect to the web from the train and upload real time train performance data to a database in the “cloud”.

EcoRunTM is self-correcting and utilises the ability of the driver to determine the most fuel efficient power notch setting available.

EcoRunTM continuously monitors GPS location, locomotive power notch and fuel consumption throughout the train journey to provide the latest updated information to the driver via the cab mounted tablet.

Load manifest information is provided by the operator by email at the time of the train departure and is automatically uploaded into EcoRunTM. This ensures the load data is correctly entered and minimises any driver input.

Temporary speed restrictions are also obtained directly from the track owner and automatically uploaded in the EcoRunTM application for that particular journey. This again eliminates the need for any driver intervention and ensures the latest TSR information from the track owner is available.

Once underway the driver receives updated information on progress, performance and efficiency via the tablet. The progress and performance of the driver is able to be accessed by the operator via the web using the available uploaded data and reports to enable informed decisions.

Reports include high level route dashboards that provide formatted real time data on fuel efficiency, driver adherence, trip time, stopped and moving time, driver efficiency score, load, distance travelled, loading and unloading periods. These reports are easily accessed and can be automatically scheduled to be emailed to the operator.

EcoRunTM has identified through trending data the presence of dragging brakes, poor driver decisions, high loading and unloading times, over loading conditions and unproductive periods where the train is stopped at signals or sidings.

EcoRunTM has provided genuine fuel efficiency savings of between 3% - 8% by altering driver behaviour and identifying train performance issues where efficiencies can be gained.
