LIFECHANGE STORY

On July 22, 2009 my life came to a screeching halt. In a short period of time, I had lost my home, my job, my family, my self-respect, and any hope of redemption. I was convicted in a court of law and was lost and broken, both physically and spiritually. It was only through the persistent e orts of those at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, who had pledged their lives to helping others, that I was saved. CVRM sta walked me through the most di cult days of my life, accompanying me to court, praying for me and with me, and sharing a love with no strings attached. What had begun as reluctance on my part became a new and overwhelming acceptance of a God, who I had long ago forgotten and forsaken. While I was in residence, I was given tasks in the o ce and soon I was able to prove myself and was o ered a paid position.

During this time, I attended many classes and spoke to groups about my stay at the Mission. I was witness to so many miracles during that year, some of them personally a ecting me and my family. My eyes were opened and my heart was lled, I realized that God had not been out of my life, I had been out of His. Four years later, I am working a permanent job at the Mission, and my family relationships have been healed. I have recently moved into a nice apartment, have adopted a dog and a cat and was able to purchase a new car. e love, the trust, and the respect that I have been shown by those at the Mission has made a huge impact on my life. I will only be able to repay that by passing it forward to those that I meet on the rest of my journey.

LIFECHANGE KATHY

VOLUNTEER

PROFILE:SHIRLEY BALINT

From my earliest recollections, I have always wanted to help people and to cook. Growing up I always helped my mom’s friends with their children. When I was 4, my grandmother let me frost my rst cake. My mom gave me my Christian background from the time I was 3 months old. My brother, Don, and I went to church at least three times a week with our mom. What an awesome beginning to our lives. Being born and raised in San Diego I had quite a shock moving to the Coachella Valley in August. A ‘Desert Sun’ headline read, “Good Morning 122 degrees.” Huh? I thought this was a mistake. In San Diego I was a Medical Assistant for over 30 years and retired when we moved here. My husband, Tim, took a position as Chief Engineer at KMIR TV. I was asked if I would be willing to be the receptionist at the station for 6 weeks. I thought, ‘I can do that!’ and so I accepted. It lasted almost 2 years and then

the position was eliminated. Working at a TV station meant that I had a TV next to my computer. I learned about CVRM from the news reports on that TV. I needed to do something to help people, so I called the Mission and started volunteering in the kitchen in 2009. I have been there ever since. I now volunteer 3 days a week. I love hearing the stories of the clients. Some of them call me mom. What is so great about it is I have a lot more grandchildren than I thought I would ever have. Everyday I’m at the Mission, Chef Eric, Anthony, and Susan teach me so much about cooking, time management and patience. I am so blessed to be able to work at the Mission. It doesn’t matter how many hours I can give, it will never compare to what I learn from the Mission. I am truly blessed by the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission.

Dear CVRM Friends,

I hope that your 2014 year has started o spectacularly!

CVRM is very busy preparing for our annual Easter festivities. ere is nothing better than being at the Coachella Valley Rescue Mission, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Most people spend Easter at home preparing a feast with family and friends. Many people don’t have that option. CVRM will be serving a delicious, hot, traditional ham dinner all a ernoon on Easter Sunday. Our guests will be surrounded by many friends and volunteers.

As with all holidays and festivities, the abundant generosity of our friends makes it possible for us to celebrate with those people in our community who are in need.

is Easter, CVRM will provide 16,000 seasonal meals, hundreds of bed nights, and vital programs to people in need. What a blessing it is to be here, able to provide for the hungry and hurting.

Please know that your friendship and support truly sustain us. Your donations make every meal, every bed, every set of clean clothes possible.

Easter joy and blessings from all of us at the CV Rescue Mission.
