A new academic year begins… Volume 5 - Issue 3 July 2014 Welcome to the 2014-2015 academic year!! It’s always a pleasure to see so many familiar faces returning for another year. A new academic year begins…

Volume 5 - Issue 3 July 2014

Welcome to the 2014-2015 academic year!! It’s always a pleasure

to see so many familiar faces returning for another year. We also

want to extend a warm welcome to the incoming medical and

graduate students, as well as recently hired faculty and staff. As

always, there a number of changes underway - changes in leadership

with Dr. Harold Paz’s departure, changes in the Health System with

the proposed merger with Pinnacle Health, and ongoing planning for a

renovation of the Harrell Health Sciences Library space. Quoting Alvin

Toffler, “Change is the process by which the future invades our life.”

We are certainly looking to the future here in the library.

The Harrell Health Sciences Library, both as a library and as an

institutional resource, is thinking holistically and collaboratively as we

plan for our future. We are in the process of designing spaces that

will support teaching and learning, research, discovery, and

innovation. We are including social spaces designed to bring

students and faculty together to encourage “idea incubation.” The

renovated space will be “characterized by flexibility, adaptability, and

usability.” The space must also support the ongoing expansion of

new educational programs, new teaching modalities, and 21st century

students coming to us as digital natives. Stay tuned for further

developments as this process moves forward.

The Harrell HSL is also beginning strategic planning for the next

three-year cycle, 2015-16 through 2017-18. As the world continues

to change around us, we must respond to ensure that our spaces,

services, and collections continue to support the four missions of

Penn State Hershey - research, education, clinical care, and

community outreach. In partnership with University Libraries, we will

focus on the discovery, access, and preservation of our extensive

collections, support teaching and learning, and advance research and

clinical care.

So again, welcome. We invite you to stop in and take advantage of

our expertise, extensive collections, space, and of course, just to say

hello!

The George T. Harrell Health Sciences Library, in cooperation with University Libraries, has acquired the

complete archive of the New England Journal of Medicine [NEJM]. This archive provides full electronic

access to NEJM from its inception as the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery in 1812. NEJM

has changed title four times over its history, so the library journals list now has entries for each title:

New England Journal of Medicine (0028-4793) [Alternate Title: NEJM]

from 1928 to present

Boston Medical and Surgical Journal (0096-6762)

from 1828 to 1928

New-England Medical Review and Journal (2163-2928)

1827

New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery (2163-3061)

from 1812 to 1826

Note, however, that using the link to any of these titles will take you to the full archive. The library is

pleased to have been able to contribute to this purchase, enabling access for Penn State Hershey and

University-wide students, faculty and staff.

This is a reminder that publications resulting from NIH funding are subject to the NIH Pub-

lic Access Mandate. Manuscripts are required to be deposited to PubMed Central, per

publishers’ policy, no more than three (3) months after they

are accepted for publication. Compliance is required for

future grant applications as well as renewals.

Additional information can be found on the Harrell Health

Sciences Library’s website.

Publication Fee Discounts

Authors of journal articles are occasionally charged a publication fee based on the jour-

nal’s fee schedule, or specifically for choosing to publish according to the Open Access

model, which allows readers immediate access to articles without requiring a subscription

to the publication. Due to institutional memberships/affiliations, Penn State authors are

eligible for publication fee discounts for the following:

Biomed Central publications – 15% discount as part of Penn State University (supporter

member). NOTE: “Hershey Medical Center-Homeland Security Masters” (full membership)

only applies to authors who are affiliated with that specific program.

PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) - $350 discount for publishing

on the Open Access model available to Penn State authors due to our site license, result-

ing in a charge of $1000 instead of $1350. NOTE: there is no discount available for the

basic publication fee.

PLoS – the publisher has eliminated institutional memberships and discounts are no long-

er available.

Library faculty have created several very short videos to help library users use our services effectively. All

are currently available on YouTube and closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

Concise instructions--only 30 seconds long when possible--are available for:

Finding e-books quickly

Searching for a journal by title

Requesting materials that the library does not own

These videos will be used on our website, in instructional materials for medical and graduate students,

and periodically advertised on our website photo carousel.
