A near miss for Earth: Solar flare that could

have knocked out power, cars and phonescame so close two weeks ago

Earth has narrowly missed electromagnetic pulses caused by solar flares

If they had hit, the pulses could have knocked out electrical equipment overcontinent-scale regions

An electromagnetic pulse that could have knocked electrical equipment over continent-scale regionsbarely missed Earth two weeks ago, it has been revealed.

Electromagnetic pulses, also known as EMPs, are massive surges of energy that can come from asevere solar flare or from a high altitude nuclear explosion.

The world escaped an EMP catastrophe, Henry Cooper, who now heads High Frontier, a group pushingfor missile defence, toldWashington Secrets.

Electromagnetic pulses, also know n as EMPs, are m assive surges of energy that can

come from a severe s olar flare, such as this one pictured on May 12, or from a high

    altitude nuclear explosion

    THE CARRINGTON EVENT

On September 1, 1859, astronomer, Richard Carrington observed a sudden flash over a large area ofsunspots on the sun.

Within 60 seconds the flash had already started to disappear, but early the next morning, there werereports that the northern lights were so bright that people could read the newspaper as if it weredaylight.

At the same time strange things began happening worldwide telegraph systems.

Telegraph operators were being shocked unconscious and the flying sparks were setting their machineson fire.

When the telegraph operators disconnected their machines from the batteries, there were still sparksflying. This is because the power of solar flares induced electricity into the lines that carried thetelegraph signals.

'There had been a near miss about two weeks ago, a Carrington-class coronal mass ejection crossedthe orbit of the Earth and basically just missed us, added Peter Vincent Pry, who served on the

    Congressional EMP Threat Commission.

Basically this is a Russian roulette thing, he said. We narrowly escape from a Carrington-classdisaster.

The event isnt rare. In 1989, an EMP effect in Canada knocking out Quebec's electric transmissionsystem.

And on May 12, one of the largest solar flares to be recorded this year took place. The Sun sent billionsof tons of solar particles into space, but they were not traveling in Earth's direction.

An overall increase in solar flare activity has been observed in the past 12 months, as the Sun reachesthe peak of its 11-year cycle.

President Bill Clintons former Director of Central Intelligence, James Woolsey, led a panel earlier thisweek on the threat of a natural or nuclear EMP.

Experts have also recently demanded that Washington prepare the nation's electric grid for an EMP.

A study into solar storm s last year predicted there w as a one in eight chance of a

major one affecting Earth by 2020. The UK, howe ver is re latively we ll prepared for an

extreme solar we ather event, according to experts at the Royal Academ y of

    Engineering

EMPs can destroy electrical equipment over continent-scale re gions

They want the 2,000-3,000 transformers in the U.S. grid protected with a high-tech metal box and sparesready to rebuild the system.

According to Woolsey, knocking out only 20 of these would shut down electricity to parts of the nation fora long time.

Woolsey told Secrets, however, that some in Congress are interested in the issue, but the administrationis just in the beginnings of paying attention.

A study into solar storms last year predicted there was a one in eight chance of a major one affectingEarth by 2020.

The UK, however is relatively well prepared for an extreme solar weather event, according to expertsbehind the Royal Academys report Extreme space weather: impacts on engineered systems andinfrastructure.

Professor Paul Cannon, chair of the working group that produced the Academys report, said: Its aninevitable natural hazard and it will have a wide impact on technology. Extreme space weather has beenvariously described by some as inconsequential, and by others as potentially cataclysmic.

Simplistically, our view is that solar super storms will be a challenge for the UK to deal with but certainlynot cataclysmic. And our motto in all this is: Dont panic but do prepare

Look at all the cynical comments from the Empire. Don't they teach you anything about electricity in publ ic school? Of

course i t will knock out the wind turbines and everything else for that matter. Inductors will burn out. And hope i t doesn'thappen in winter, chaps. Think your oil burner runs only on oil? I have a wood stove and a stream out back but when

Sandy knocked out the power around here las t October you couldn't walk to the gas station and fill up a can to run your

generator. Had to be prepared. It was JJ Thompson who got us into this when he discovered the electron in 1897, by the

way. Now everything runs on 'em.

    > Omg loos ing the use of cars, mobiles and all electric is NOT a big catastophe AT ALL! From call ing the absence of

these appl iances a 'catastrophe' just goes to show how pathetically vulnerable this world has become. Really? There'senough food being grown in your immediate neighborhood (walking dis tance) to feed everyone there? No one you know

has diabetes and needs insulin refrigerated? You're OK with not being able to call the police if someone comes by and

tries to take the food you do have? It would be a catastrophe for ME, since I live in a suburb of a large city on a small lot.

I'm not growing my own food, and my lot would not grow enough to support our family of four.

that we have forgotten life skil ls . So by labelling the absence of electric as a catastophe s hows how pathetic this world

has become because i believe some day this 'catastrophe' will happen and when it does people will not have a clue

what to do and over a very short period we as a s pecies will be wiped out because we will not know common survival

wasn't exactly chaos, was it? All s caremongering. Ignore it. Perhaps the Government wants to tax solar flares,

next?"........... The scientists say there is a 1 in 8 chance of being hit by the year 2020, with possible cataclysm ic effects,

and this guy is s uggesting we jus t ignore it, and do no preparation whatsoever. Perhaps there's a middle ground. Maybe

we can go with a low tech awareness program, and strap all these non scientific scoffers to weather balloons and

monitor their screams when the solar flares come.

contingency plans on how to deal with it. The US power s upply system is extremely vulnerable with its overhead power

lines and transformers on poles . An event like the one in 1859 could des troy the grid and leave many people without

power for up to two years.

when the original Carrington event took place, aurorea were seen as far south as the Caribean. And the telagraph

system was rendered useless for quite a time and the operators suffered electric shocks from the keying devices. If we

were to have another event right now, our National Grid would be knocked off line for a long time, all plugged in electical

and electronic equipment would be burnt out and even those with solar panels would be s tuck as weirdly, they require an

outside AC source before they can work.
