April 13 and 14, 2019

BELLS AND WELCOME

M The grace of our Lord † Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy

Spirit be with you.

C And also with you.

M Dear friends in Christ, we come together to begin the solemn celebration of Holy Week.

Christ entered in triumph into his own city to complete his work as our Messiah: to suffer,

to die, and to rise again. Let us remember with devotion his entry that culminated at the

empty tomb and follow him with a lively faith. United with him by Baptism, we share in his

resurrection and new life.

C Hosanna in the highest!

M Let us pray.

God our Father, we remember how Jesus entered Jerusalem and was welcomed as a king by

those who shouted, “Hosanna!” and spread their clothing and palm branches in his path.

Accept our praise, and listen to our prayers as we rejoice in our triumphant King, Jesus

Christ, your Son, our Lord.

C Amen.

M I confess my rebellion.

C I am troubled by my sin.

M Lord, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God.

C Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.

M Your Savior has come quickly to help you. Through his life, death, and resurrection Jesus

has rescued you. God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life

and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his

own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C Amen.

SONG OF PRAISE HYMN 363 The King of Glory Comes

The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

Who is the King of glory? How shall we call him?

He is Immanuel, the promised of ages.

The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

He gave his life for us, the lamb of salvation;

He took upon himself the sin of the nations.

The King of glory comes; the nation rejoices.

Open the gates before him; lift up your voices.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

M Gracious God, the energy and emotion of your triumphant entry into Jerusalem still brings

joy to our hearts. Yet that moment of joy turned so quickly to sorrow and pain.

C May Palm Sunday serve as a reminder that, while emotions may be fickle, your love and

faithfulness remain unchanging.

M We pray in Jesus’ name, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now

and forever.

C Hosanna in the highest.

HYMN OF THE DAY 130 Hosanna, Loud Hosanna

SERMON Luke 19:28-40, Bible page 1053

Pastor Peter Panitzke

NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is,

seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one

being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation,

he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and

became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered

death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come

again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father

and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who

has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic

Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the

resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE

The Lord’s Supper is a fellowship meal. In this meal Jesus expresses his fellowship with us by

giving us his body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. In this meal we also express our

fellowship with each other, that is, that we are united in a common confession of faith.

We at St. Paul’s want everyone to enjoy this fellowship meal. However, we cannot ask someone

to express agreement with us until we give that person an opportunity to discover what we

teach. That is why we schedule frequent membership classes to provide an overview of our

teachings. Following the Promise is currently being held on Sunday mornings and Tuesday

evenings. You may register on the back of your Connection Card.

If you are a member of St. Paul’s or a member of a WELS or ELS congregation, we invite you

to express our common confession by communing with us. You may wish to use the

“Personal Preparation for Holy Communion” on page 156 of Christian Worship to examine

yourself. Please register your intent to commune as a member or guest by filling out the

Connection Card and placing it in the offering plate.

The light-colored cups in the center of the individual cup tray contain non-alcoholic wine.

Gluten-free wafers are located in the trays on the Communion rail. If you need a gluten-free

wafer, please inform an usher as you approach the rail. The first pews in the left center

section are reserved for those who have difficulty approaching the Communion rail, and we

kindly ask those who desire to be communed privately to use these pews.

Our vision is that by every possible means we bring every

person in our area of influence closer to Christ through regular worship, small groups, and serving together.

1. Share a day that stands out in your mind as one of the most enjoyable days of your life.

2. Read John 12:12-19. Palm Sunday is one of very few events recorded in all four gospels, which

highlights its importance. What would have made this a memorable, enjoyable day for the crowds

and for the disciples?

3. Read Hebrews 12:2-3. What do you think the author meant by “the joy set before him”? What

would have given Jesus joy on Palm Sunday?

4. Read Philippians 2:1-11. What would make Paul’s joy complete? Would Jesus find joy in that same

thing?

5. How are Jesus’ humiliation (Philippians 2:6-8) and Jesus’ exaltation (Philippians 2:9-11) related to our

call to serve each other?

6. Read again Hebrews 12:2-3. What might cause a person to lose joy or “lose heart and grow weary”

in one or more of the following roles?

a. As a parent

b. As a spouse

c. As an employee

d. As a friend

7. “For the joy set before him.” What is that joy set before you in one or more of the roles above?

What are you looking forward to as you serve others in these roles?

8. Close with prayer, either speaking or singing this hymn:

On my heart imprint your image, Blessed Jesus, King of grace,

That life’s riches, cares, and pleasures Have no power to hide your face.

This the superscription be: Jesus, crucified for me;

Is my life, my hope’s foundation, And my glory and salvation. Amen. (Christian Worship 319)

b. The joy of the disciples: The church will be v__________________

2. Informed Joy

a. The joy of prophecy f_______________ . Zechariah 9:9

b. The joy of salvation a_______________ .

• Revelation 21-22

3. Inspired Joy

b. For the pain of being a church leader

c. For the pain of being a Christian

d. For the pain of death

My Next Steps to Receive the Gift of Joy

• Memorize the steps of the Savior: “For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning

its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such

opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart” (Hebrews 12:2-3).

• Follow the steps of the Savior: Read Philippians 2:1-11 and see the connection between the

contented-serving-of-others and Jesus’ humiliation and exaltation.

• Focus on the joy to come: Enjoy Revelation 21 and 22. Imagine what a day would be like in this

place. How much pain and frustration are you willing to go through before you experience this joy?
