Ride, eats and elevenses with Les – 11 OctoberOn Saturday morning, from around 09:45, VMC members and friends started arriving at Les Sim’shouse in Quellerina. Consternation was on the faces of many who visited this veritable museumof motorcycling.Les has an impressive collection of over 40 bikes, not to mention a few 4-wheeled automotivevehicles. His main claim for is that his bikes have to start with one kick (was he in theWehrmacht? Sorry Les, that was one click). To be honest this is not an idle statement; hisrunning bikes all seem to start after one kick and you can be guaranteed that the non-runningones will be running soon!We were treated to coffee, tea, soft drinks and munchies by Les’ wife, Pam while Les himself justwanted to part with his beers to any takers. Chantal Madgwick was there to capture the eventwith her talent for getting the “perfect picture”.The time passed all too quickly with everyone reminiscing about their bikes and their memories ofthe Cortina 1500 GT, Morris Minor and Valiant. Thanks to Les and Pam for a unique morning andfor being such marvellous hosts.

The door, in the left rear of thepicture, leads to the DJ room.

Below, the holiest of holies –the DJ bikes:

The TT Roadster, Post-war Model H,Junior and the notorious Ricardo -each with the mandatory “litterboxes” in place. After all they areTriumph (I ride one myself – Ed.)

The Bike Hospital. On the left, theTRW 500; a casualty on theMagnum. Les was planning onusing this trusty steed on the FairestCape but it’s not to be.

Riders of the past by Ken Wiggins

At the end of 1978, while still a student, I’d made extramoney doing custom spray painting. This and the gooddiscount I got allowed me to purchase a new Suzuki GT750 Triple (the Kettle or Water Buffalo as she wasnicknamed).

I bought the bike from the Suzuki agency, which was as Iremember, on the southern side of Main Street as youentered Fairview. My late dad’s best friend had introducedme to the owner, Jannie. To my absolute embarrassment,it was months later that I realised Jannie was our greatracing legend Jannie Stander.

I idolized Jannie and would go to his dealership after ‘Varsity, on the pretence of needing sparesor any mundane excuse just to be in his presence.

Recently, I found a very interesting website (Roy Hesketh Circuit Heritage), with lots of historicinformation from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. I’ve included a picture of Jannie Stander and MikeHailwood at the start of the 250cc race in December 1958. The text is also from the same source.

Jannie Stander and Mike Hailwood head down the pitlane for the 250cc scratch race at RoyHesketh circuit in December 1958. Jannie and his beloved "Boksnot" are rightly South Africanlegends. Memorably in 1960 they notched up four second places and a fastest lap, while Janniealso scored a 500cc third in UK and Europe. At the French GP he showed he was a match for theworld's best privateers in the 500cc race before bike trouble cost him a lap. His campaign endedprematurely when he broke an arm at the Dutch TT, but the famous combination had left anindelible mark in UK and Europe. At home they won the 1957 PE 200 by four minutes from GeoffDuke and Jannie also won the South African Gold Cup 24 hrs race at Grand Central circuit thatyear, riding for 12 hrs, the maximum allotted time a rider could complete. Jannie was unofficial1954 and 1955 South African 250cc champion and 1959 and 1963 South African 250ccchampion. Jannie also took the 1956 South African 350cc championship.

SAVVA Technical Tip #90 from Jean Gobey, SAVVA SecretaryRefurbishing Bakelite

Many cars from the late 1940’s and into the 60’s have Bakelite components; especially dashboard and window trim items. Unfortunately, over the years Bakelite takes on a dull unhappyappearance. The question is how do we refurbish it without damaging the original lustre (antiquedealers call it patina).

I had this problem and was giventhe following advice from arestorer of early radios. You mayrecall radio cabinets from the 30’sand early 40’s were made of woodthen from the 40’s into the 50’swere made of Bakelite. Bakelitewas subsequently replaced bymore modern plastic. Incidentally,Bakelite radios, telephones etchave become highly collectable.Bakelite is a brittle product and ifbroken extremely difficult, if notimpossible to repair.

Here is what I was told to do – Firstly, clean all the old junk off by washing with a good solvent likeHandy Andy. Then using water, lightly sand it down with a very fine water (flatting) paper. I used1200 then 1800. Once the old dry powdery surface is removed, dry it and polish it with good oldNugget shoe polish. You may have to repeat the polishing sequence a few times as the polish isinitially absorbed into the Bakelite. Buff with a soft cloth and Walla a really nice original lookingfinish.

Touring in the Eastern Transvaal by Mike LesterMy son, Greg, and I toured the Eastern Transvaal (Mpumalanga if you insist) at the same time theMagnum Rally was held. I have ridden in this area every year for the last 24 years; usually on theMagnum. I thought that I had travelled each and every road there but this time managed to find acouplet that I had never ridden before. The first is the road from Ngodwana (Moodi Paper Mil), via Kaapsehoop, to Nespruit. From theN4 you turn off, southwards a couple of hundred meters from the paper mill, towards Kaapsehoop.Kaapsehoop itself is a very quaint old town and well worth a visit. The road carries on after thetown and you then travers Kaapsehoop Pass and come out at Nelspruit. The road itself isapproximately 30 km long, in excellent condition with almost non-existent traffic. The second is the R38, which takes you eastwards from Barbeton to Kaapmuiden, and the N4 viathe De Kaap Valley, the Sheba Mine and Louw’s Creek. Between Barbeton and the Sheba Mineis a pass, the road then follows a meandering river along a valley between high mountains. It isone of the most spectacular and scenic rides I have ever done. The road surface is pretty goodand traffic is light. Total distance is approximately 55 km.I can heartily recommend both of these routes.Mike.

From the bench by Craig Patterson

At the turn of this century I became interested in classic motorcycles as a result of wanting a caferacer which I thought would be cool. I soon learned that I was a little shy in the old grey matterdepartment when it came to Brit bikes, which I thought was the basis of any good Cafe racer.Having grown up in a metric South Africa, I just could not get my head around anything Imperial. So of course I had a leaning towards European brands and as a student I had to keep my VWBeetle alive. Anyway, after a few years of Beetle ownership, I considered myself quite the experton repairing Volkswagens, so I went the German route.

As a result of a personal tragedy, two forced career changes and a status change from single toknot, my priorities and responsibilities changed forever. Over the last six years, my employmenthas taken me away from my home to remote construction sites for extended periods of time. Anytime spent at home is sometimes only once or twice a month; bikes are right at the bottom of thelist of priorities and rallying is, at best, a dirty word. My employer is also not too chippa on metaking leave outside of the industry norm.

Notwithstanding these hurdles, I still manage a rally now and again, but there was always thatdesire to ride the "One". For me the biggest hurdle was the most important one; a bike.About a decade ago I bought the remains of a pre-war DKW which I thought was DJ eligible, butwas sadly not - It was a 1938 model. I still, however, decided to try and restore it. Two problemsimmediately arose, the total lack of any information and of course spares. DKW was hardlymarketed in SA before the war broke out and then in 1945, the factories were stripped bare by theRussians. Also, being a 2-stroke, budget, workhorse they were not high on anyone’s list ofcollectables and anything German was frowned upon by many in light of the blight Germany lefton history. So most were ridden into the ground and then either stripped of useable bits for othermarks or scrapped.

For a year or so I hunted down any bits or information that I could find locally. In my searches, Ihad the fortune of finding two bakkie loads of pre-war bits. Amongst this wreckage I now had thebits to restore the 1938, but more importantly there were remains of a SB 500. My excitementwas short lived as there was no frame, rear wheel or fender and many other important bits weremissing. Furthermore, the engine parts were from three different bikes (a 1934, a 1935 and a1937) and pretty much shot. At that stage there were only two complete bikes in SA. It was alsoapparent that, as these parts changed hands over the years, much of the crucial bits were lost, misplaced or used on other marks.

Then further misfortune; one of the previous owners of the spares I had contacted said he mayhave some of the parts that I needed and was willing to help with any parts he still had. Not longafter that discussion, he was tragically killed in an accident.

So, no worries, let’s try the "Net" and this is when it really hit home. The SB 500 was going to bea bust. It was clear that the pot of gold at the foot of the rainbow was going to be easier to findthan parts for the 500. When parts did find their way onto the "Net" they were literally going for anarm and leg so it looked like the DJ was going to be a pipe dream.

One thing I did learn was that there were a lot of spares available for the smaller DKW models anda number of aftermarket manufacturers. Almost all of the body parts were interchangeablebetween the smaller bikes and some of the mechanical and electrical bits too. I had come acrossa very rusty and bent 1936 frame and a 1935 engine block that needed extensive welding. Thecrank was shot but the piston was usable, but it was a 200cc for which I had no barrel or cylinderhead. I took stock and felt that I had a chance at building a DJ bike. It would have to be a smallsingle.

Then came the next hurdle. Budget; mine was nil, nada, zilch. My wife and I had a young sonand a daughter on the way. Disposable income equalled disposable nappies and medical bills.Let’s not mention the pressure of me working out for twelve months of the year. Then in 2011, after reading about that years DJ, I made the decision I was going to ride in the2013 JD come hell or high water. If it was on a 200cc toddler, so be it.

I had introduced some of the contractors, at sites I had worked, to a pot distilled brandy I hadaccess to. I generally do not like brandy but must admit that it was not half bad and they agreedand wanted more! Could I supply and so a deal was struck, I was to become a bootlegger. Aftera couple of months I had managed to save up some of the profits from the bootlegged brandy. Iregistered on eBay and PayPal then started to surf the "Net" in earnest. I had also made subtlehints to my intention to ride the DJ. The wheels where set in motion. I had little more than twoyears to prepare from scratch for the 2013 JD.

We anticipate the next instalments of Craig’s chronicle; Building the Budget Bootleg Bike and TenLeft Thumbs (Editor).

Odds and Sods:All Girl Biker Bar from Roger HoughtonAn old, blind cowboy wandered into an all-girl biker bar by mistake.

He finds his way to a bar stooland orders a shot of JackDaniels. After sitting there for a while, heyells to the bartender, “Hey, youwanna hear a blonde joke?”

The bar immediately fallsabsolutely silent.

In a very deep, husky voice, thewoman next to him says,

“Before you tell that joke,Cowboy, I think it is only fair,Given that you are blind, that youshould know five things:

1. The bartender is a blonde girl with a baseball bat.2. The bouncer is a blonde girl.3. I'm a 6-foot tall, 175-pound blonde woman with a black belt in karate.4. The woman sitting next to me is blonde and a professional weight lifter.5. The lady to your right is blonde and a professional wrestler.

Now, think about it seriously, Cowboy. Do you still wanna tell that blonde joke?”

The blind cowboy thinks for a second, shakes his head and mutters, “No... not if I'm gonna have toexplain it five times.”
