Thoughts for the New Year (And other ramblings from your Pastor)
I do not recall another New Year that begins with as many questions as 2019 begins for us. 2018 was not a banner year for Trinity. Our troubles are well known, not only in Conway, but in churches throughout our state and our country. This was publicity we did not seek, but which has resulted in countless offerings for our church and thousands of prayers for our congregation. I know many of you are anxious to begin either rebuilding, building a new building or relocating to a safer area. The good thing about dealing with the Federal Government and the United Methodist Church is that both of these institutions require that we take our own sweet time working through all the issues. While the Cordie Page building was a fairly simple building to renovate, the rest of our campus presents challenges we have not faced before. I urge each of you to approach the next few months with an open mind as we seek to discern God’s will for our buildings and our church. This is HIS church and that reality has been the anchor in the storm for me and others for the past three months. On a lighter note, there are things I have resolved to do in 2019: 1) A diet has become necessary. When Harold’s Fat and Sloppy ceases to carry your size it’s time to cut back. 2) I plan to fish more in 2019. Since I have not owned a fishing pole in eight years I will probably have to buy a pole. I found out the last time I lived near the ocean it was more fun to go and watch other people fish and not catch anything. 3) I plan to exercise more. This should be my easiest promise to keep as I have a remote for just about everything. If I drop something on the floor I wait until I drop some thing else nearby before bending over to pick them up. A quarter on the floor no longer sets off bedlam in the Strong house. 4) I plan on going to see a doctor in 2019 when I’m not sick or dying. They call that preventive medicine. What I am trying to prevent is sudden fast food death. The truth of the matter is we all enter 2019 blindly. We know not what the New Year will bring. Would we have ever expected to find ourselves in our current position? What we can be sure of is no matter what we face, we are not alone. God is with us. He is looking over our church, our families, our children and ourselves. I believe we are going to see a miracle in 2019 for our church. I hope you will remain with us at Trinity as we share in what God is doing.
Program Ministry News
A New Year! How exciting; because frankly, last year was not so great. But, even as we continue to recover and rebuild after Hurricane Florence and her awful flood waters, it has been a blessing to see God at work and to feel his presence all around us. We have shared some wonderful times in ministry like a great Fish Club season, our joyful Children’s Christmas musical, the Youth ‘Tsunami’ retreat and Youth caroling at Carolina Garden.
So many sweet moments to enjoy with our children during Sunday School and ‘Children’s Time’ at Sunday worship, and plans for the Youth Ski Trip underway. Florence, we’re starting a new year, and you’re not invited. I’m looking forward to all that God will do in 2019. Bring on the New Year! Peace and Joy, Cindy
Thank you to everyone who provided Angel Tree gifts. Trinity helped two families with five teens, who are recovering from the flood, have a brighter Christmas. We filled up two cars with gifts, and for a minute there I thought I was driving Santa’s sleigh. Thank you, Trinity, for your generous hearts!
Triple L, our seniors fellowship group, will meet on Thursday, January 3 at 12 noon at the Church Office, to take the bus to see a movie. Let’s have lunch and go to a matinee. Sign up by January 2nd.
So proud of our Fish Club! The Christmas Musical, ‘Crazy, Busy, Peaceful, Holy Night,’ was amazing! Our children sang their hearts out and lifted our spirits. A big thank-you again to Andy, Linda, and all of our fabulous volunteers. Fish Club (Big Fish/Little Fish/Minnows) will begin on Wednesday, January 9th, at Cordie Page. Please note, we are returning to Wednesday nights.
Our Youth are looking forward to the Winter Retreat & Ski Trip, January 18—21st. We’ll enjoy praise and worship at Lake Junaluska and skiing at Cataloochie.
We have a Youth Ministry fundraiser scheduled for Sunday, January 6th. It’s a ‘Polar Plunge,’ It’s like the ice bucket challenge, but instead you can sponsor a youth, and we’ll run into the chilly ocean waters. Help us ‘chill out’ for a cool cause, our very own youth ministry at Trinity UMC.
Our Children’s Sunday School will feature the ‘Deep Blue Sea’ curriculum and the books of Luke & Matthew from winter into spring. Thank you to all of our wonderful Sunday School teachers: children,
youth and adult classes, for all you do to help us grow in faith.
‘Souper Bowl’ Sunday is just around the corner. Our Youth invite you to purchase a bowl of chili on Sunday, February 3rd, to take home and enjoy with the game. More details to come.

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for your generous donation of food to CAP during the month of November. We were able to feed the hungry in our community during the Thanksgiving season. Our hope is that you will continue to support our ministry and be a vital part of helping others.
May God continue to bless you! CAP Staff
The UMW soup supper was well attended with 60 + ladies there. All had a wonderful time of food and fellowship. The meal was tasty and the program delightful. Thank you to the circles and thank you to each and every lady who attended. A special thank you to Pastor Ann Kovan and the people of Brown Swamp Church who were so kind as to invite us to use their beautiful facility. A love offering was collected and will be sent to Teen Challenge in honor of Brown Swamp United Methodist Church.

New Bible Study
Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen. For by it our ancestors won God’s approval. Hebrews 11:1-2
In The Faithful, you will explore pivotal moments in the lives of 5 of our Old Testament predecessors.
Borrowing from previous studies by Priscilla Shirer, Kelly Minter, Beth Moore, Jennifer Rothschild, and Lisa Harper, you’ll see how God uses the lives of ordinary people for His glory and the good of His
people. Strengthen your faith as you walk alongside Gideon, Nehemiah, Esther, Hosea, and Malachi as
they chose to obey God, no matter their circumstances.
Our study begins on Tuesday, January 8, at 10:00 AM at Union United Methodist Church.

Get to know Jesus well, because the more you know him, the more you’ll love him. And the more you love him, the more you’ll want to follow him. And the more you follow him, the more you’ll become like him. And the more you become like him, the more you become yourself. —Ned Erickson
A Penguin “Parable”
During storms, emperor penguins huddle for warmth, taking turns at the center and on the perimeter of the group. While incubating eggs, up to 6,000 male penguins have been observed clustering for shelter against the harsh Antarctic winter. Partially grown chicks gather in protective “crèches” (French for “cribs”); often surrounded by a colony of adults, these groupings ward off predators and cold.
In stormy times, humans also need supportive groups; we can’t survive alone. A church family allows us to take turns giving and receiving care. Amid social upheaval, injustice, illness, natural disaster and any loss or crisis, God invites us to gather for protection and warmth. In the church community, we support and strengthen one another and are empowered to go out again into the less-sheltered world.
