Congratulations and thank you for accepting these responsibilities and duties, to assist and
guide the WCWA for another year.
Rich Bright
Election Coordinator
August 31 was the deadline for nominations This weekend I confirmed who wanted to
run and who did not. We had one candidate for each office, except- no Treasurer and
two for membership. Bless Beth Sier, she decided to drop her nomination and accept a
nomination for Treasurer. (thanks) Therefore, we have 1 candidate for all the offices and
no contested races. So at the next meeting of the BOD in October, we will validate those
candidates, so I am happy to announce, that your 2017 Officers for the WCWA:

Election News!
Sharron Bortz
I have been a member of WCWA for the last 8 years, and Membership Coordi-
nator for the last 2 years, through all the augmentation of the new online member-
ship system. I continue to talk with the programmers about making the enlistment
easier for the internet novice and am always available for those who chose to phone
me. Some people chose not to use the online system and I am an advocate for
them. Along with the online enlistments, I entered over 160 paper applications.
This year we pushed the Pay-to-Play system and brought many new members in
after their initial free experience. The system also allowed a few past members
who hadn’t paid their dues in time and or wouldn’t be able to attend more than
one event the opportunity to participate, and brought money into the club. . The
end of the Civil War anniversary lowered the membership of all clubs across the
country but I was delighted with our membership of 723 in 2016 and have plans to
encourage membership in 2017, along with the hard work of unit commanders and
other members.

Men and woman of Adams Legion
Once more I find myself compelled to extend my compliments to the
Officers, NCO’s and the rank and file, for their courageous and dedi-
cated resolve over the past campaign. I have gained renewed vigor
and vitality in my nomination for Confederate Battalion Commander
while being humbled by your confidence and trust. During this criti-
cal time, the men and women of Adams Legion have stood to their
post and have answered this call with unanimous consent. In this
show of support, I now find myself reinforce with unbridled patriot-
ism and pledge to answer this call by taking my place on the firing
line to defend freedom; our shared love of country and way of life.
Thank you all!

Second Act- borrowed from Hollie Deese
Racing horses find a new career re-enacting history
Racehorses who are no longer winning and face an uncertain future are being given a second shot at life and, in a way, the chance to live out their final years in the service of their country.
The California Historical Artillery Society (CHAS) is a non- profit, educational organization dedicated to preserving the life and times of historic artillery, and is the only West Coast horse drawn artillery group in existence. It was founded in 1997.
To get those horses, the non-profit , near Salinas, CA., recues Standardbred trotters from the Sacramento, CA., Cal Expo Har-ness Racing Track who can no longer race and would likely be sold and slaughtered for dog food. People like Dennis Winfrey then train the rescued horses to pull numerous pieces of rolling stock in parades, school day events, and civil war re-enactments.
The retired racers are just right for artillery work because they have already been exposed to loud noises and crowds at the track, and because their herd mentality aids in them picking up new routines by following the more experienced horses, says Winfrey, one of the organizations founders.
“The old saying You can’ t teach an old dog new tricks may be true for dogs, but not true for horses,” Winfrey says, Basically , Standardbreds are just buggy horses. They are very calm, tame horses.
Over the years, the society has grown from performing at a few parades to participating in more than 30 events a year with four full scale cannons, including one 10 pound Parrot Rifle, and one 10 pound Howitzer . The horses also pull an antique cais-son, supply wagon, and ambulance.
Not only is it good for the public, but it’s good for our the people that volunteer. We have people that can’t afford horses or don’t have space for horses, or maybe don’t want a horse, but they get to come and do all the stuff.
Their largest fundraising event of the year is the annual Duncan Mills Civil War Days each summer, they also rely on individu-al sponsorships to help offset Winfrey’s cost for the upkeep of the horses.
But even if there was no help, Winfrey would never turn his back on his former racers.
“Our horses,” he says, “are rescued forever.”

Near the Potomac River, Washington D.C.
Well, this first year of the war draws to a close. Both sides, I observe, have fared well and done admirably. Though I
do not like the thought that we must continue into another year of war, I admire your Southern pluck and resolve. If
there is one thing I have learned this year, either from my own personal newspaper reports or those drawn from my
associates in other regiments, it is that the Confederate army does not yield the field without stiff resistance. So far as I
have been informed by Army of the Potomac Command, there are no major battle events planned for the rest of the
year.
Both sides appear content to rest on their laurels for the time being. A company of artillery seem to have planned a
ball...I have received correspondence confirming the existence of such an event, and the flyer is above. Also, I am
seeking a trainee...I intend to serve three years in this capacity, but if someone wants to learn the ropes now, this is a
good time to step up.
That is all for now...I believe.
Greeley.

Hi — I’m organizing a historical social dance event in Seattle — old
and new music, no costume requirement — and thought, since your
events sometimes include a ball or dance, some of your members
might like someplace else to dance.
Breathless Waltz: social partner dance with fast tunes and slow, old
music and new. Part of Northwest Dance Network.
No partner needed, just bring nonmarking shoes (Converse or slip-
pers work fine, high heels are dangerous.) We’ll be teaching basic
rotary waltz and polka, and *really* basic Walking To The Music to
get everyone on the floor. Also a taster of the redowa step for fancy
dancing.
Third Friday of each month, including tomorrow August 19th. 7:30-
10pm. In the Seattle Central MAC dance studio.
$7/$5 for students.
More at Breathless Waltz on Facebook or at http://
breathlesswaltz.com/

one who would be interested, or if you are, please contact me, Beth Sier, at [email protected], 425-308-
7963. Thank you.

each, firm.

Sad to say but after 15 years of reenacting, the old SGM has to call it quits due to health reasons.
I have disposed of a lot of it to members but I still have the following to sell.
One like new Yakima 10x12 wall tent complete with fly.
Uniforms both blue and grey.
Table, chairs, books, canteen, etc..
The items will be with me in the Confederate camp at Snoqualmie.

I have a 1863, black powder, 12 gauge, double barreled shotgun. Replica that I
won in AZ. It has never been fired and is in a nice gun case. It was insured for
$1000 when shipped to me. I would take $650 for it. I don't really have a need
for it . I will have it at the Kennewick event.
