Even the smallest amounts of inflammaon, such as a clogged hair follicle or pimple, can result in post inflammatory hyperpigmentaon that can somemes take several months to fade. Although most products and procedures are well-tolerated in ethnic skin, it is important to understand the inflammatory response that these individuals may experience. Any ingredient that has a potenal to cause irritaon or dryness can cause pigment alteraon in ethnic skin. What usually begins with flaking and itching, can somemes turn into a more severe case, which is followed by redness and superficial erosions. In lighter skin types, if any reacon occurs, the skin typically will return to normal once use of the product is disconnued. With darker skin types, dryness and irritaon are frequently followed by post- inflammatory hyperpigmentaon. There are many methods to reduce unwanted pigment. For the medium/ darker-skinned individual, one has to have a great deal of paence. In many cases the coloraon will be reduced with combinaon therapy. These include hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, arbun, renoids, pepdes, coffee berry, glucosamine, niacinamide, and other an-oxidants. If the pigment damage is moderate to severe, you may want to seek the care of a dermatologist, since physicians can prescribe products with a higher percentage of acve ingredients. To produce the quickest results, our office recommends a dual therapy approach which combines both topical products for home use, with in office procedures. Pigment Challenges in Ethnic SkinIndividuals with darker skin types have challenging cosmetic concerns that usually have to do with unwanted hyperpigmentation. Unlike their lighter skinned counterparts, people with ethnic skin types have to be extremely careful about introducing trauma or heat into their skin. Darker skin types, which also includes light skinned Asians, have a propensity to create unwanted pigment. Even the smallest amounts of inflammation, such as a clogged hair follicle or pimple, can result in post inflammatory hyperpigmentation that can sometimes take several months to fade. Although most products and procedures are well-tolerated in ethnic skin, it is important to understand the inflammatory response that these individuals may experience.

Any ingredient that has a potential to cause irritation or dryness can cause pigment alteration in ethnic skin. What usually begins with flaking and itching, can sometimes turn into a more severe case, which is followed by redness and superficial erosions. In lighter skin types, if any reaction occurs, the skin typically will return to normal once use of the product is discontinued. With darker skin types, dryness and irritation are frequently followed by post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

There are many methods to reduce unwanted pigment. For the medium/darker-skinned individual, one has to have a great deal of patience. In many cases the coloration will be reduced with combination therapy. If the hyperpigmentation is mild, topical medications can be successful. These include hydroquinone, azelaic acid, kojic acid, arbutin, retinoids, peptides, coffee berry, glucosamine, niacinamide, and other anti-oxidants. If the pigment damage is moderate to severe, you may want to seek the care of a dermatologist, since physicians can prescribe products with a higher percentage of active ingredients.

To produce the quickest results, our office recommends a dual therapy approach which combines both topical products for home use, with in office procedures. Light chemical peels and microdermabrasion speed up the exfoliation rate of the skin and have been found to be safe and effective. For more dramatic results, a deeper peel that is well tolerated in all skin types may be used. This peel is especially beneficial for patients that suffer from hormone induced pigment, such as Melasma. Risks and benefits of all procedures will be discussed during your cosmetic consultation with an Aesthetic Provider.
