A >MODEL= OF CONSISTENCY
Klaravich Stable and William H. Lawrence=s Economic Model
(Flatter) won the 2016 Easy Goer S. and had placed no fewer
than four times at graded level, including a runner-up effort
behind champion Drefong (Gio Ponti) in that year=s GI King=s
Bishop S. But if Saturday=s GIII Hal=s Hope S. is any indication,
there could be much bigger and better to come for the 5-year-
old, who outslugged the classy comebacker Irish War Cry
(Curlin) to score by 1 3/4 lengths. The race was marred by a
single-horse fall on the far turn involving Paul Pompa=s Send It In
(Big Brown), who broke down in his right fore and could not be
saved.
Malagacy (Shackleford), making his second start since finishing
a heavily bet fifth in last year=s GI Arkansas Derby, looked to toss
his head at the break and was therefore off a step slow, but he
soon recovered beneath Javier Castellano and worked his way to
the front as Irish War Cry, having his first run since last year=s
GI Pennsylvania Derby, held his spot at the fence. Economic
Model raced off the pacesetters for the opening three-eighths of
a mile, then split rivals to turn the pressure up on Malagacy
entering the turn. Irish War Cry rode the rails on the bend, but
popped off into a three-wide position nearing the lane and it
was a two-horse affair at the quarter pole when Malagacy faded
tamely away. Cont. p3
GOOD MAGIC LEADS FOY WORKERS Champion juvenile male Good Magic (Curlin) was among a
number of sophomores who breezed Saturday with an eye
towards next week=s GII Fountain of Youth S. at Gulfstream Park.
Unseen since breaking his maiden in the GI Breeders= Cup
Juvenile, the e Five Racing Thoroughbreds and Stonestreet
Stables colorbearer went four furlongs by himself at Palm
Meadows in :48.30 (5/56) (XBTV Video).
Also out for spins Saturday were a trio of Dale Romans
trainees who worked at Gulfstream: Grade I winner and last-out
GII Holy Bull S. runner-up Free Drop Billy (Union Rags)
(5f, 1:01.55, 16/39); GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. third finisher
Promises Fulfilled (Shackleford) (5f, 1:00.42, 8/39); and Feb. 4
allowance winner Storm Runner (Get Stormy) (5f, :59.01, 4/39).
AEverybody worked well,@ Romans said. AI haven=t decided
what I=m going to do with them all yet, but I=ll make that
decision [Sunday]...They=re moving forward all the time. They=re
some nice horses, they=re doing well and I=ve just got to pick the
right spots for them. They have to step it up now. As long as
they step up, we=ll be in good shape.@ Cont. p6

Irish War Cry came in slightly and bumped Economic Model
nearing the entrance to the final furlong, but never could grind
his way past and the Chad Brown runner crossed the line a
reasonably comfortable winner. Tower of Texas (Street Sense)
closed belatedly for third.
AHe never let the other horse
pass him,@ winning jockey Irad
Ortiz, Jr., said. AHe=s the kind of
horse that when he makes the
lead, if you hit him left he will
get out and if you hit him right
he will get in. I didn=t want to
have any contact with the
other horse, so I switched my
stick and hit him right-handed. I
just took a hold of him and kept
him straight.@

GI Cigar Mile H., Economic Model made four very well-spaced
trips to the races in 2017, good for a third in an April allowance
at Belmont and a season-ending victory in a similar test in
Elmont Oct. 12. In preparing for this seasonal debut, he had
been working with champion Good Magic (Curlin), who resumes
in next Saturday=s GII Xpressbet.com Fountain of Youth S.
Jockey Jose Ortiz was pleased with the return effort of Irish
War Cry, winner of last year=s GII Holy Bull S. over the
Gulfstream surface.
AWe had the one hole--that didn=t play in our favor,@ he said.
AMalagacy broke good. I knew he
had a lot of speed. He wanted to
go, so I sat. Graham told me he
didn=t want him to go
head-to-head. He was coming off
a long layoff. We didn=t want to
get caught in a speed duel. I just
followed Malagacy and Irad. I
finally got out at the quarter pole.
I thought he was going to win.@

After finishing seventh in a Nov. 17 optional claimer at
Woodbine for trainer Mark Casse, Conquest Tsunami found
himself on a California-bound plane and was soon stables at San
Luis Rey Downs. Having survived the tragic wildfires that
descended upon that training facility in early December, the
6-year-old made it two wins in as many appearances for this
barn with a smooth, front-running success in Saturday=s
GIII Daytona S. at Santa Anita.
With Tyler Baze electing to stick with Grade I winner What a
View (Vronsky), it was Victor Espinoza at the controls and the
bay jumped out to a comfortable early advantage, and when the
opening quarter-mile was posted in just :21.99, it was going to
take something unforseen to get him beat.

Still cruising through four furlongs in a relatively hassle-free

AThere was just one way to go,@ said Espinoza, who was aboard
the 6-year-old Stormy Atlantic gelding for the first time. AI broke
in front and kept my position all the way to the wire. For him the
main thing is to let him go and just run his race. I felt he was
going pretty quick but he was doing it so easily, so I was pretty
much a passenger.@
AUnbelievable, they all showed up, they got three great rides,
and we=ve got three great owners,@ added Miller. AThis race kind

Purchased by Gary Barber for $140,000 out of the Conquest
Stables dispersal at Keeneland November in 2016, Conquest
Tsunami was unplaced in four of his five appearances last

LOUISIANA VET GETS 15 MONTHS IN
PRISON IN DERMORPHIN CASEBy T.D. Thornton
A Louisiana veterinarian has been sentenced by a federal
judge to 15 months in prison and fined $10,000 for his role in
selling dermorphin, an unapproved opioid drug 40 times more
powerful than morphine, for the purpose of improving the
performance of racehorses at various Louisiana tracks between
2010 and 2012.
In addition, the Nebraska pharmacy that was found guilty of
repackaging the synthetic version of dermorphin--which in its
natural form is derived from secretions of South American tree
frogs--was sentenced to five years of corporate probation and
ordered to pay a $200,000 fine.
Both sentences were announced Feb. 23 via press release by
the U.S. Attorney=s Office, Western District of Louisiana.
Dr. Kyle James Hebert, DVM, 43, of Lake Charles, Louisiana,
had been found guilty in November on one count of conspiracy;
two counts of receipt of adulterated or misbranded drug with
the intent to defraud and mislead, and one count of
misbranding a drug while held for sale with the intent to defraud
and mislead.
Kohll=s Pharmacy & Healthcare Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska,
(doing business as Essential Pharmacy Compounding) was found
guilty on one count of conspiracy and two counts of introduction
of adulterated or misbranded drug in interstate commerce with
intent to defraud and mislead.
Evidence admitted at the nine-day trial showed the pharmacy
repackaged a synthetic form of the drug that it obtained from a
California chemical company, labeled it as AD-Peptide,@ and sold
it to Hebert and other veterinarians.
Hebert, according to the U.S. attorney=s press release, then put
the drug into syringes and gave the loaded syringes to trainers.
Evidence showed that dermorphin is a strong painkiller that
masks horses= pain and any pre-existing injuries. Depending on
dosage, it can also act as a stimulant when injected in horses.
The Food and Drug Administration has not approved the drug
for use in humans or animals.
The sentenced parties could not be reached for comment
regarding the possibility of appeals.
CHRB OFFERS EHV-1 UPDATE The California Horse Racing Board issued the following update
Friday evening regarding a recent case of EHV-1 at Los Alamitos:
A 10-year-old horse used to pony horses at Los Alamitos Race
Course was euthanized after developing severe neurological
signs, subsequently testing positive for the Awild-type@ strain of
equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1). Even though the pony horse
was exhibiting neurological signs, the Awild-type@ strain is
generally considered less virulent than the neurological strain
EHV-1. The pony was used to accompany Quarter Horses at Los
Alamitos during the races. He last worked Feb. 11. The barn
where the horse was housed is under quarantine, and the six
quarter horses he ponied during the races that week are being
closely monitored.
The EHV-1 test results were reported Tuesday evening. Dr.
Gary Beck, the CHRB official veterinarian at Los Alamitos, has
been monitoring the situation since early Wednesday morning,
setting up the quarantine conditions, reviewing biosecurity
procedures with horsemen, and consulting with the California
Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) veterinarian
assigned to the incident. To date, there is no indication of
additional cases, and the most common incubation period after
EHV-1 exposure (three to eight days) has passed from when the
pony last had direct contact with other horses (all QHs).
There are horses entered to race at Santa Anita that are
currently stabled at Los Alamitos. Those horses are being
monitored. Horses with no reasonable exposure risk are being
allowed to race after being inspected by CHRB veterinarians
prior to shipping to Santa Anita.
Any questions should be directed to the official veterinarians
and/or Dr. Rick Arthur, the CHRB=s equine medical director.
Updates will continue to be posted in the official veterinarians=
offices and on the California Department of Food and
Agriculture and Equine Disease Communication Center websites.

Tipped out for a four-wide bid turning for home, the bay opened
up his long stride in the stretch, eating up ground and hit the
lead late for a 3/4-length success. Crafty Jack (Trajectory)
completed the exacta at 18-1 and favored King Zachary filled the

9-year-old mare is also responsible for a 2-year-old filly named

Woodbine turf in August, improved to second over that course a
month later and was third when stretched around two turns in
the Cup Saucer S. Oct. 8. Second next out over a yielding course

main track here last time Jan. 27. Returned to the turf, the 6-1
shot got over from post 12 to sit just to the outside of longshot
pacesetter Snap Hook (Flower Alley) around the first turn.
Rose=s Vision drew on even terms with that firster around the
far turn and put his head in front passing the eighth pole. He
fought off a resilient Snap Hook on the rail, keeping his head in

BIG PLANS FORBIG-SPENDING PHOENIX
By Kelsey Riley
Look back at the big talking points in the Thoroughbred
industry last year, and at or near the top of the list has to be
when Kerri Radcliffe materialized seemingly out of nowhere at
Fasig-Tipton=s Gulfstream sale and spent $1.55 million on a pair
of 2-year-olds for the unheard-of Phoenix Thoroughbreds. As the
sales season wore on and Radcliffe continued to make
headlines--the top lot at breeze-up sales in the U.S. and France
and again at Arqana=s August yearling sale, plus a 1-million gns
colt at Tattersalls and the $3-million Nickname (Scat Daddy) at
Fasig November--we continued to learn more about Phoenix
Thoroughbreds, a Dubai-based investment fund with aspirations
to be involved in racing, sales and breeding at the top level
globally.
Phoenix Thoroughbreds is the brainchild and baby of the
Bahrain-born Amer Abdulaziz, who confirmed with a tone of
pride that Phoenix is in the final stages of being recognized as a
regulated investment fund, a process that should be complete
Ain the next few weeks.@
AThere is no other [Thoroughbred] investment fund in the
world that is regulated except Phoenix Thoroughbreds,@ he said.
AIt will be regulated in the next few weeks; it=s in the final
stages.@ cont. p2
WRITTEN BY DAZZLES IN DIAMOND Saturday=s A$1.5-million G1 Blue Diamond S. produced
something of a fairytale result, with Written By (Aus) (Written
Tycoon {Aus}) justifying favouritism for owner/breeder Neville
Begg. Begg, a former trainer himself who bought Written By=s
dam for A$3,000, is the father of Written By=s trainer Grahame
Begg, who also trained the sire. The unbeaten colt was ridden by
young rider Jordan Childs, who picked up the mount after
another rider was suspended prior to the colt=s December
debut. The Blue Diamond is the first Group 1 win for Childs.
Breaking well from the far outside, Childs was able to guide
Written By towards the inside as they raced onto the course
proper and they wound up in the two path, a joint second
behind the front-running Crossing The Abbey (Aus) (Helmet
{Aus}). Written By pulled alongside that rival rounding the bend
while Lady Horseowner (Aus) (Equiano {Fr}) ranged up on his
outside and Oohood (Aus) (I Am Invincible {Aus}) began to make
progress from the back while very wide. When they turned for
home, however, it was all about Written By. The chestnut hit
the 200 about two lengths in front while racing slightly greenly
and never truly looked like being beaten. Cont. p7 (Click here)

WE’RE NOT LOOKING TO COME INTO
THE MARKET AND LIQUIDATE AFTER
FIVE YEARS; WE’RE HERE TO STAY.Amer Abdulaziz
Big Plans For Big-Spending Phoenix cont. from p1
AThe fund is registered in Luxembourg and the head office is
based in Dubai, with operations in different countries,@
Abdulaziz continued. AWe=re focusing mostly on the U.S. market
and the European market which is Ireland, France and the UK,
and Australia and New Zealand.@
Abdulaziz, now a Dubai
resident, grew up on an Arabian
horse farm and was formerly a
champion owner of Arabians. He
said when he moved to America
to study finance at the
University of California Berkeley,
however, the seed was planted
for a life in the Thoroughbred
business.
AI was close to Golden Gate Fields and I went there all the
time, so that=s when I first fell in love with Thoroughbreds,@ he
said. AI had a good friend who was racing Thoroughbreds so I
went with him to all the races and started reading about the
whole Thoroughbred industry and building my own knowledge
and database. When I graduated I went into the corporate
world, and decided no, this isn=t what I=m going to do, I=m going
to go back to horses. That=s where the fund idea came from.@
Abdulaziz said that the time between him getting Phoenix
started and Radcliffe bidding on those top-of-the-market 2-year-
olds at Gulfstream Park was about five years. During that time,
in addition to getting his team together, Abdulaziz was putting
together proposals to convince
high net worth individuals to
invest in Thoroughbreds.
AOur focus was not on the
horse people, but more high net
worth individuals and [people in]
the financial industry,@ he said.
AThe equine people, we were
thinking of leaving them until
last, when we=ve built up our
own track record. Then we can
go to them and say, >this is who we have, this is our track
record=, and if they want to join they can. It took a lot of time to
get everything together and bring the whole team, the right
people, together; not only the horse people but the
management and finance people as well.@

Abdulaziz said Phoenix Thoroughbreds has been organized as a
five-year investment fund, with the option to extend the fund a
further three years, but Ainvestors sometimes don=t like to lock
up their money for seven years, so we say a five-year fund,@ he
explained. All assets will be valued at the end of five years and
purchased by the second fund.
AThe assets will go back to the second fund; stallions that
perform very well and the broodmares will go to the second
fund,@ he said. AThey will be valued and then the second fund
will buy the assets from the first fund. We=re not looking to
come into the market and liquidate after five years; there will be
equine fund numbers one, two, three, four...we=re here to stay,@
he said. AThe commitment for the investors is five years, so let=s
hope we do well so we can attract them to come into the
second fund as well.@
It would be fair to say, with the opportunities Phoenix
Thoroughbreds has had from its breeze-up purchases, it is doing
well. The very first filly Radcliffe bought for Phoenix at the
Gulfstream sale was a $750,000 daughter of Uncle Mo named
Dream Tree, who is unbeaten in four starts for Bob Baffert
including the GI Starlet S. and GII Las Virgenes S. The other
purchase from that sale, the $800,000 Take Me With You (Scat
Daddy), broke her maiden by nine lengths at Windsor in
September for Jeremy Noseda. Phoenix=s $1.7-million OBS
March topper Diamondsandpearls (Congrats) broke her maiden
by 6 1/4 lengths in a >TDN Rising Star= performance for Baffert in
July but was injured when fourth in the GII Sorrento S.
Walk In The Sun (Street Sense), the i1.4-million top lot at
Arqana=s breeze-up sale last May, broke his maiden over
Kempton=s all-weather at first asking on Jan. 26 and will run
again in Aabout 10 days= time,@ according to Abdulaziz. Walk In
The Sun, a son of GI Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense, and
Gronkowski (Lonhro {Aus}), a 300,000gns Craven yearling also in
the Noseda yard, look likely to have targets in America.

Walk In The Sun at Arqana last May | Zuzanna Lupa
TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 4 OF 13 • THETDN.COM SUNDAY • 25 FEBRUARY, 2018
THE SUCCESS WE’VE HAD SO FAR HAS
MADE OUR LIVES A LOT EASIER.
THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF INTEREST AND
WE’RE CLOSING MORE DEALS.
Amer Abdulaziz
AHe=s a beautiful horse and he has the right pedigree,@
Abdulaziz said of Walk In The Sun. AI think he=ll do very well on
dirt.@
Abdulaziz said the Kentucky Derby is the race he=d most like to
win anywhere in the world, and that could be a target for Walk
In The Sun. A decision on whether the strapping bay tries the
dirt in the G2 UAE Derby on Mar. 31 will be made after his
second run.
In the meantime, this early success--with plenty of promise
from a crop of newly minted 2-year-olds--has led to increased
interest from investors, Abdulaziz said.
ANowadays, because of the international success we have had,
people are getting to know us better and we=re getting calls
from people all the time,@ he explained. AThe success we=ve had
so far has made our lives a lot easier. There=s been a lot of
interest and we=re closing more deals. New investors are coming
on board as well.@
Phoenix=s Australian arm gained some publicity last week
when it was announced it had partnered with another young,
up-and-coming force, Aquis Farm, to purchase and stand the
Group 1-winning 2-year-old Invader (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) at Aquis
in Australia. The announcement came about six weeks after
Phoenix partnered with Aquis, Yulong Investments and trainer
Ciaron Maher to purchase a colt by I Am Invincible for
A$1.6-million at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
While Radcliffe manages Phoenix=s Northern Hemisphere
operations, that responsibility in Australia falls to David Lucas,
who made a splash buying up mares and weanlings for Phoenix
at last year=s Australian breeding stock sales. In addition to
purchasing one of the top-priced lots, Phoenix also entered the
sellers= market at the Gold Coast sale, selling four pinhooks for a
combined A$1-million. They sold two at the Inglis Classic sale
earlier this month and have nine to sell at Inglis=s Easter sale in
April.
AWe=re adopting a different strategy in Australia,@ Abdulaziz
said. AWe=re focusing more on the breeding side; we have our
stallion [Invader] that we bought 25% of. We have about 22 top-
quality broodmares and we have the yearlings and 10 2-year-
olds that will be racing soon. So far the Northern Hemisphere is
mostly focusing on the racing side of it, but the idea is to move
into the breeding side as well and that=s going to come with
time.@ Phoenix also bought into the National Stud=s Group 1
winner Aclaim (GB) (Acclamation {GB}), who enters stud this
year.
Phoenix has its 2-year-olds in training in Australia with the likes
of Ciaron Maher, Toby Edmonds and John O=Shea, and the first
of those, colt called Hard As (Aus) (All Too Hard {Aus}), will debut
on Sunday at the Sunshine Coast for trainer David Vandyke.
If Phoenix in Australia can pick up the momentum the
company has started with in the Northern Hemisphere, it
shouldn=t be long before it is making an impact.
AWe=re very excited that we=re the first soon-to-be-regulated
investment fund worldwide in the Thoroughbred industry,@
Abdulaziz reiterated. AWe just want to make sure we do well so
we can keep our investors happy so we can come back to the
auctions and expand our operations.@

Master the World, who registered a belated first black-type

Listed Wild Flower S. at Kempton and tuned up for this with a
seventh-of-eight in the Dec. 23 Listed Quebec S. back over this

after the opening exchanges, he was badly impeded when
making relentless headway in the straight as Mr. Owen veered
right inside the final furlong, but gathered vital momentum in
the dying embers to fall a head shy of that errant rival at the

Gracious John, who secured three handicap triumphs in a 16-
race campaign last year, failed to beat a single rival in a Jan. 2
Newcastle conditions heat on seasonal return and again in the
Feb. 3 Listed Cleves S. going six panels at this track last time, but
was on song in this furious dash to claim a second stakes score
in game fashion. Sharply into stride to claim an immediate lead,
he was comfortable on the front until stoked up at the top of
the straight and held on bravely under an energetic drive after
his two-length buffer at the eighth pole dwindled to a short
head at the line. AHe was a bit lifeless going to post in his last
two starts, but his old sparkle was back today,@ explained rider
Fran Berry. AHe had good early speed, got into a good rhythm
and was able to fend them off. He stuck his head out, he is very
game and all heart.@

Enbihaar and Oohood each made good late progress off wide
trips but never threatened Written By, who hit the line
2 1/2 lengths the best.
The 87-year-old Neville Begg watched the race at home in
Sydney with his wife Yvonne, and he said, AIt=s so exciting and
it=s an especially great result for Grahame. I=ve been breeding
horses for 50 years, I=d say, but to get my first 2-year-old Group
1 with one I=ve bred is a big thrill for me and Yvonne and the
family. The horse is such a tough fellow, he really won with
authority today.@
Grahame Begg was formerly based in Sydney and took a year
and a half hiatus from training beginning in 2014. He resurfaced
with a stable in Victoria at Pinecliff on the Mornington Peninsula
in July of 2016. Begg sent Written By out for a winning debut in
a 1000 metre Sandown maiden on Dec. 2, and the colt returned
with a half-length victory on Feb. 10 in the G3 Blue Diamond
Prelude going 1100 metres. He shrugged off the wide outside
barrier on Saturday to best the first and second of the G2 Blue
Diamond Prelude for fillies, Enbihaar and Oohood.
Jordan Childs told Racing.com, AI was very lucky to get the ride
but all you need in this game is an opportunity and it=s amazing
to be able to make the most of it like this. I know it=s probably
silly to say after the horse has just won the Blue Diamond but I
think there=s still some improvement to come.@
Disappointments of the race included Kinky Boom (Aus) (Spirit
of Boom {Aus}), who broke last and never made up much
ground; Ennis Hill (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}), who appeared
poised in the second flight of runners at the top of the stretch
but faded thereafter; and Long Leaf (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}),
who raced near the rear and never made an impact.

Pedigree Notes... Neville Begg purchased Written By=s dam, Yau Chin, for
A$3,000 out of the Scone Select Yearling Sale in 2007. The filly
was trained for Begg and partners by Peter Morgan and wonone of 10 starts. She has since proven much more effective as a
producer, her first four foals all winners. Written By is her first
black-type winner, and he is followed by a yearling full-brother

four, however, paid off on Saturday when the bay added
another top-class trophy to his mantle with a win in the G1
Oakleigh Plate. He also led home the exacta for his championsire when overhauling the pacesetting Snitty Kitty (Aus) late on.
Settling about three lengths off the flying Snitty Kitty and
between runners down the side of the course, Russian
Revolution raced into range while four-wide under Mark Zahracoming off the turn. Snitty Kitty proved a tough customer, only
letting Russian Revolution past about 25 metres from the line,
and he found the finish a neck in front, with the top five
separated by three quarters of a length.

Russian Revolution didn=t get going until late in his 2-year-oldseason, but he quickly evolved into one to watch with four
straight wins to begin his career, including the G3 Vain S. and G2
Roman Consul S., the latter over Group 1 winners Astern (Aus)
(Medaglia d=Oro) and Capitalist (Aus) (Written Tycoon {Aus}). Hesuffered his first defeat when fourth behind Flying Artie (Aus)
(Artie Schiller) in the G1 Coolmore Stud S., but redeemed
himself first-up in the autumn with a win over the future Everest
scorer Redzel (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}) in the Galaxy. Off the board inthe G1 TJ Smith S. and G1 Doomben 10,000 to wrap up that
campaign, Russian Revolution won the G2 McEwen S. first-up at
four but likely gave connections a scare when beating just one
home over the same track and trip in the G1 Moir S. threeweeks later. Tuned up for this with a pair of Randwick trials, he
appeared back to his best with a gritty win.

As for what will come next before Russian Revolution joins his
old adversaries Capitalist and Flying Artie at Newgate, China
Horse Club=s Teo Ah Khing said, AI think the investment and the
collective efforts with the training team and all the people
involved pays off; the patience shown with Russian Revolution
where he had a rest and is just coming back now, and I think
that bodes well for him as he=s going to be prepared to be
retired to stud. I think we=re going to talk to the team and see
what=s next for him.@
Pedigree Notes... Russian Revolution was one of 18 yearlings, alone or in
partnership, signed for by China Horse Club at Inglis=s Easter
yearling sale in 2015 for a total spend of A$7,580,000. The fourth
foal out of the U.S.-raced and winning Stravinsky mare Ballet
D=Amour, he is a half to the G3 Frances Tressaday S. winner
Turbo Miss (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}). The third dam is L=Extravagante
(Le Fabuleux), who produced the Canadian champions
L=Enjoleur, La Voyageuse, Medaille d=Or and the GII Breeders=
Futurity winner D=Accord. Ballet D=Amour=s most recently
recorded produce is a yearling colt by another Newgate sire,
Wandjina (Aus).
LUCK ON SMASH=S SIDE Brave Smash (Jpn) (Tosen Phantom {Jpn}), placed in some of
Australia=s most important contests over the past few months,
at last broke through at the top level and likely secured a spot at
stud in Saturday=s G1 Futurity S. at Caulfield. Breaking
prominently alongside Showtime (Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), Brave
Smash and Craig Williams allowed that rival to take a clear lead
down the side of the course while saving ground on the fence.
Still on Showtime=s heels while the Guineas winner Mighty Boss
(Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) moved up on the outside, Brave
Smash looked as if he may have an lucky trip once again as they
turned for home and he had nowhere to go. When a gap opened
between Showtime and Mr Sneaky (Aus) (High Chaparral {Ire})
at the 150, Brave Smash burst through as his stablemates Tosen
Stardom (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) and Humidor (NZ) (Teofilo
{Ire}) made headway down the middle of the track. Brave Smash
found the line 3/4 of a length to the good of Group 1 winner
Tosen Stardom, with Showtime sticking on for third and
Humidor filling fourth.

A listed winner and group-placed in his native country, Brave
Smash arrived Down Under last spring and set himself up as an
immediate prospect for the inaugural A$10-million The Everest
with a win and two seconds, all in listed company, right off the
bat. Brave Smash wound up third, beaten a length, in The
Everest. He was fifth in the G2 Australia S. on seasonal debut on
Jan. 26, and was flying late to be third to Hartnell (GB)
(Authorized {Ire}) in the G1 CF Orr S. on Feb. 10 after being
forced to change course late. With no such significant problems
on Saturday the bay was allowed to show his true colours.

Brave Smash | Bronwen Healy
Devise | Race Images/Troy Leggett
AHe put the writing on the wall last start and he=s carried that
form here today,@ trainer Darren Weir told Racing.com. AWhat
happened last start was just something that happens in racing;
Johnny [Allen] was following the right horse and then Hartnell
came under pressure so he decided to come off its back and as
soon as he did, Hartnell went. Had he stayed on Hartnell=s back
he might=ve challenged him. We felt we had the horse in the
right order so he just needed luck from the barrier and he got a
great ride from Craig.@
Weir confirmed that Brave Smash, Tosen Stardom and
Humidor would all advance to the G2 Blamey S. at Flemington
on Mar. 17 with the G1 Doncaster H. at The Championships the
following goal.
Pedigree Notes... Brave Smash, who has a yearling full-sister waiting in the
wings, hails from the extended family of Japanese champion
miler and successful sire Daiwa Major (Jpn) (Sunday Silence),
who appears under the fourth dam alongside his half-sister, the
champion filly and G1 Arima Kinen winner Daiwa Scarlet (Jpn)
(Agnes Tachyon {Jpn}).
DEVISE EARNS ELUSIVE GROUP 1 RING After the injury induced scratch of Bonneval (NZ) (Makfi {GB}),
a winner of the 2017 G1 New Zealand Oaks, the runner-up in
that contest deputized admirably, as Devise (NZ) (Darci Brahma
{NZ}), became her sire=s ninth Group 1 winner when she pulled
off a half-length score in the 1600-metre G1 Haunui Farm WFA
Group One Classic at Hastings on Saturday.
Tabbed the second choice at 14-5 after 11-5 crowd=s pick, New
Zealand Champion Sprinter Start Wondering (NZ) (Eighth
Wonder {NZ}), the 4-year-old mare established an ideal stalking
trip in fifth as Brilliant Shine (NZ) (Guillotine {NZ}) set out in
front. Poised to pounce from the 600-metre mark, the Shaune
Ritchie trainee inched up to fourth and swooped five deep into
contention in upper stretch. G1SW Consensus (NZ) (Postponed)
had taken over leadership duties in the meantime and proved
game in the run to the line, but she could not hold off Devise to
her outside, who was going slightly better inside the final
furlong. Travimyfriend (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) was 1 1/4 lengths
back in third, the same margin in front of Brilliant Shine, while
Start Wondering was another 1 1/4 lengths back in fifth.
AShe really does deserve this,@ Ritchie told NZ Racing. AIt was a
bit easier without Bonneval here, she=s been a bridesmaid to her
a couple of times. It helped that a few of the favoured runners
drew wide, but I=m delighted for the horse. She always puts in
and she=s a lovely mare.@
Added pilot Michael Coleman, AThere was good speed and she
travelled up peaches and cream before I let her rip. She=s super
consistent and deserved a big one.@
Runner-up in the New Zealand Oaks at three to Bonneval,
Devise ran eighth to that rival in Randwick=s G1 Australian Oaks
on Apr. 8 and was spelled until lifting a Ellerslie 1400-metre
Benchmark 85 handicap on Nov. 7. Third later that month in
similar conditions at Pukekohe, she completed the superfecta in
the G2 Cal Isuzu S. at Te Rapa on Dec. 16 and was a last out
bridesmaid in the 2100-metre G3 Trentham S. on Jan. 13.

Pedigree Notes... Devise is a homebred for The Oaks Stud, which stands her sire,
multiple champion Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill). The fourth foal
and third winner out of the placed Doneze Girl (NZ), Devise was
consigned by The Oaks Stud to the Karaka Premier Yearling Sale
in 2015, but didn=t attract a bid, despite having a second dam
who is a half-sister to three noteworthy Octagonal (NZ) siblings:
Australian Horse of the Year Lonhro (Aus), MG1SW Niello (Aus)
and Australian MSW & GSP Shannara (Aus). She is the second
daughter of Doneze Girl to run second in the G1 New Zealand
Oaks after her half-sister Zurella (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}) in 2012.
Zurella, a two-time group winner in her native land, also ran
third in the G1 Waikato Draught Sprint and scored at Group 2
level across the Tasman before selling for A$800,000 in foal to
Vancouver (Aus) at the 2017 Magic Millions Gold Coast National
Broodmare Sale to Dean Hawthorne. Doneze Girl, a half-sister to
Group 3 winner Diamond Deck (NZ) (Octagonal {NZ}) has an
unraced sophomore full-sister to Devise named Revise (NZ) and
a juvenile full-brother to come. G1 AJC Oaks heroine Mahaya
(NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}) is a half-sister to Devise=s third dam, GSW
& MG1SP Shadea (NZ) (Straight Strike).
SUNLIGHT SHINES IN SILVER SLIPPER Magic Millions 2YO Classic winner Sunlight (Aus) (Zoustar{Aus}) justified favouritism for the G1 Golden Slipper on Mar. 23with a win in Saturday=s G2 Silver Slipper S. at Rosehill. Sunlightinitially took a tow into the race from >TDN Rising Star= Estijaab(Aus) (Snitzel {Aus}), but that pair were soon overwhelmed byanother >TDN Rising Star=, Neutrality (Aus) (Sebring {Aus}), whomade a bold move approaching the 600 to assume the lead.Estijaab on the rail reclaimed the lead from Neutrality as theystraightened while Sunlight moved three-wide for clear runway. The race soon came down to the fillies Estijaab and Sunlight, that pair drawing seven lengths clear of the eventual third-placed Gongs (Aus) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), and while Estijaabput in a valiant effort at second asking Sunlight overhauled herapproaching the 50 metre mark to win by a quarter length.Calvin McEvoy, assistant to trainer Tony McEvoy, said Sunlightwould next contest the G3 Magic Night S., replicating the seven-day backup she used into the Magic Millions.
AI think we learned something about her today,@ McEvoy toldracingnsw.com.au. AWhen the other two decided to go out infront, Tim asked her to come back and she did. She raced like atrue professional. It was all class. She was forward enough andwe knew she=d run well but there is still improvement to comewhich is why I have a big smile on my face.@ Sunlight and Estijaab are now at 4-1 and 5-1, respectively, forthe Slipper. Saturday=s G1 Blue Diamond S. winner Written By isat 13-2. Also on Saturday at Rosehill, Godolphin=s Kementari (Aus)(Lonhro {Aus}) solidified his status as favourite for the G1Randwick Guineas on Mar. 10 with a win over third choicePierata (Aus) (Pierro {Aus}) and second choice D=Argento (Aus)(So You Think {NZ}) in the G2 Hobartville S. A SECOND EMIR=S TROPHY FOR THE BLUE
EYE by Alan Carasso
The two-time champion older horse in Qatar, The Blue Eye
(GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) got a terrific ride from off the pace by
perennial leading jockey Harry Bentley and outfinished 2016
Qatar Derby hero Noor Al Hawa (Fr) (Makfi {GB}) to win
Saturday=s US$1-million Emir=s Trophy for the second time in
three years. US raider Money Multiplier (Lookin At Lucky) was
enterprisingly ridden by Frankie Dettori and held on for third,
just ahead of 2017 Qatar Derby victor Mac Mahon (Ity)
(Ramonti {Fr}).
Away without incident, The Blue Eye landed in a midfield
position and raced a path or two off the inside with cover as
Money Multiplier, who refused to settled through the opening
800m or so, was allowed to stride into the lead rounding the
second turn. The pacesetter, marking the first overseas runner
for champion trainer Chad Brown, took them into the second
bend while racing noticeably more comfortably, but looked to
be in deep water when Noor Al Hawa was pulled out to deliver
his challenge in upper stretch. The latter clawed his way past a
stubborn Money Multiplier with 250m to travel, but Bentley
produced The Blue Eye down the center of the track and the
duo finished over the top for the victory. Chemical Charge (Ire)
(Sea the Stars {Ire}) endured a rough passage and finished well
down the field.
Winner of two of four starts in France for Aleyrion Bloodstock
and trainer Christophe Ferland, The Blue Eye fetched i400,000
at the 2014 Arqana Arc Sale and was exported to this
jurisdiction. The four-length winner of this event in 2016, he was
only ninth in defence of his title 12 months ago and was exiting
a runner-up effort to Barwod (GB) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) in a local
trial Feb. 1.
The Blue Eye=s 3-year-old half-brother Julian Rock (Fr)
(Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was runner-up in a single juvenile start
over the Chantilly all-weather last November and the winner is
kin to Siyouni (Fr) fillies of 2016 and 2017. VIDEO
