WORLDCLASS IMPACT

Since the Business School was created in 2008, we have invested over £21 million to support the creation, expansion and internationalisation of the School. I am proud of the rapid progress we have made in these 5 years.

We have seen a six-fold increase in the number of international undergraduate students and a doubling of international postgraduate students. Our faculty has expanded too, growing by over 75% as we have brought in world-class academics from all over the world; 42% of our faculty are non-UK nationals, with 29 different countries represented. Alongside this rapid growth and internationalisation, we have maintained the highest standards: we are in the top 10 in the UK in all our subject areas, one of only three schools to be so.

So, today we find ourselves with a strong national standing: with fully engaged and highly employable students and with distinctive and outstanding research topped with a first-class environment in which to study and work.

The next phase of the School’s development is to extend our reach and profile on the international stage. We will continue to build our reputation for outstanding and innovative business education and research that addresses the major global challenges confronting today’s business and society. Within the next five years, we intend to be ranked in the top 100 of university-based business schools in the world, the top 20 in Europe and the top 5 in the UK. To achieve this we will concentrate on academic excellence, creating outstanding career opportunities for our students and engaging in research that has world-class impact.

AMBITIOUS & ENGAGED

Over 95% of our students progress successfully and complete their course, graduating with a degree that will help launch a successful career in whatever industry or business sector they choose.

In 2011, the Business School was ranked 11th in the UK by the primary national measure of employment outcomes with 83% of our students gaining a graduate level job or post-graduate study place within six months of graduation.

The diversity of our student body is also growing each year. In 2011, our students came from more than 115 different countries and it is our goal to continue to build the internationalism and diversity of our student body over the next 5 years.

Our research shows that the School attracts students who are highly engaged, as well as able. Taking part in the many clubs and societies created each year by students for students, undertaking business challenges (such as the IBM Universities Business Challenge, the UK CFA Research Investment Challenge and the international CIMA Business Challenge, which our students won in 2012), contributing to improving teaching and learning, collaborating on flagship building projects and volunteering in the local area are all integral to the university experience lived everyday by our exceptional students. The School is a unique community where participation is as important as individual ability and where respect, inclusivity and personal leadership are as valued as academic excellence.

Students who choose the University of Exeter Business School are amongst the most able young people in the UK. Our standard offer for admission is AAA and we rank 9th in the UK for the quality of our incoming undergraduate students.

Gregory Kent (UK)BA Flexible Combined Honours with International Study

I took part in the Government-funded Study China Programme during my first year. China excited me, so Hong Kong University seemed like a good choice for my industrial placement. In my second semester I worked one day a week at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and I’d done a short placement with them in London before I went, so through my contacts I was able to arrange an internship in their Hong Kong Sustainability Department. I got to see a different side of Hong Kong and get a feel for what it would be like to work there.

Roberta De Angelis (Italy)MSc in International Management

Studying at the Business School has given me the opportunity to take advantage of a first-class learning experience. The programme is a good mix of theoretical and practical approaches and the many case studies used have really helped deepen my understanding. There is a significant amount of group work, which is a big advantage as it has helped develop my team-working skills. Overall, the research-inspired lectures have convinced me to stay here to complete a PhD in Management conducting research into sustainable business. I’ve enjoyed the experience here so far and I’m looking forward to the next three years.

Saul Greenland (UK)MSc in Tourism, Development and Policy

The programme is designed to give you a holistic understanding of the industry, which is essential for the kind of consultancy work I want to get into. I’ve been introduced to people in the sector and had plenty of opportunity to network and gain contacts. I’ve also gained valuable work experience at the National Trust creating a visitor experience survey to measure customer service across their Devon properties. Ultimately I enrolled on the course because I wanted to help solve contemporary issues in tourism.

Coming to Exeter has provided the foundations and tools I need to do something I feel very passionate about.

David Boulton (UK)MSc in Finance and Investment

I was accepted at other Russell Group universities, but I chose the University of Exeter Business School because of its reputation, the impressive investment it is putting into research and continuous development and the structure of the course. This MSc provides a real challenge for students who want to run the extra mile in their postgraduate studies. It’s a very rigorous nine-month programme that entitles you to the CISI Diploma, a professional qualification which is above the industry standard. I would encourage future students to use all the possibilities the School offers for networking. Coming from all over the world, your fellow students too are an extended network of contacts you can rely on in the future.

Erdoo Karen Adu (Nigeria)One Planet MBA

After working in Nigeria, mainly in scientific roles in the development field and human resource management, I was attracted by the One Planet programme – in particular to the fact that it blended my keen interest in environmental sustainability with core business, financial and leadership skills. My dreams translated to reality when I was awarded the scholarship funded by Afren Plc. My advice to anyone considering this MBA would be to go for it! It is an experience that will change your life. The rich diversity and varied experiences of your colleagues provides a cross-section of perspectives across sectors and borders.

Wenjie Li (China)MSc in Accounting and Finance

It was during my BSc in Finance and Management at the Shanghai Business School that I realised I needed more advanced practical financial management knowledge to achieve my ambition to help Chinese SME’s to thrive. The University of Exeter, with its reputation and high-ranking position, was somewhere I had admired. The teaching staff, the educational resources, the beautiful environment, the facilities and the wide range of student services are all reasons why I chose to study here. I’ve attended several Business School events, including a guest lecture by Exeter alumnus Martin Wood from Vicarage Capital Ltd. His ideas and opinions really blew my mind and inspired me a lot.

Hannah Vosser (UK)BA in Management with Marketing with Industrial Experience

Applying for my industrial placement has been a tough process, but with support from the Employability Team I’m pleased I’ve been accepted on a 12-month placement with Pfizer in Surrey. I’ll be working in the Marketing, Communications and Operations Department of their Speciality Care Unit. I’d recommend all Business School students to consider doing an industrial placement, I’ve found the whole experience invaluable and now feel I’ll be ahead of my peers when I graduate because of my work experience and the skills I’ve gained in applications and interviews.

Grace Santos-Murphy (UK)BA in Economics

You just have to visit the Business School to get a feel for the high quality of work that goes on here. I was immediately impressed by the enthusiasm and passion that came through from the lecturers. You can tell that the teaching staff are extremely passionate about their subjects and they put a huge amount of effort into making our lectures and tutorials as interactive and interesting as possible. There’s a buzz about the place, which makes it an enjoyable place to be whether I’m working on an assignment, in a group study session or eating lunch with a friend.

Viet Huynh (Vietnam)BA in Accounting and Finance

I think its diversity is one of the things that makes Exeter really special, not just in the student body but amongst the staff as well. In the Accounting department, I have had a chance to work with Gary Abrahams and Professor David Kolitz from South Africa, Aurel Kucani from Albania, Dr Chen Lim and Chie-Min Teng from Malaysia and Dr Bill Peng from China, to name just a few. They all have their own ways to motivate us and their own experiences to pass on, but you can tell they all have a genuine passion in this subject and the desire to share that passion with us, their students.

Rishit Radia (Tanzania)BA in Business Management

The support Exeter gives to students, I honestly feel can’t exist anywhere else in the world. If someone has the initiative to do something, such as to set up a new society like some friends and I did, the University will try to help however it can.

In my second term, I began taking advantage of all the different opportunities that came along. I failed in some, but still learnt a lot from them. And others have opened new doors and changed the whole way I am thinking about my career. My advice would be not to miss any opportunity that comes your way.

Julia Shan Hui Ho (Singapore)MSc in Marketing

I studied International Relations at Exeter before beginning my MSc, so I’ve seen at first-hand how the Business School has developed in recent years. Facilities like the PC clusters, BART submissions and the La Touche café definitely meet my expectations and make me feel like I’m getting my money’s worth, which is important to me as an international student. There are 30 of us on the course which means we really have the time to forge close relationships with our professors. I’ve always been pleased by their quick response and willingness to help. My dissertation supervisor, Dr Sotiris Lalaounis has been incredibly supportive and put in a huge amount of effort to help me.

Vidip Jatia (India)BA in Business and Accounting

We are extremely fortunate to have lecturers who have a lot of industrial experience sharing their first-hand knowledge with us. This has given me a taster of exactly what working in industry is like. I’ve also enjoyed the talks given by Exeter alumni, they have made me think outside my comfort zone about how I can set up a successful company when I return to India, but also make a difference to society.

INNOVATION & CO-CREATION

The MSc International Management and the One Planet MBA are explicitly structured around international material and attract a diverse international student body. Similarly, our economics, finance and management degrees draw upon material, ideas and situations from across the globe, reinforced by our international faculty who bring their own examples and contexts to their teaching. We actively engage with our world-wide alumni network to provide guidance, expertise and corporate engagement for our students.

University of Exeter Business School students are uniquely prepared to take on the challenges of modern business. Central to this is our commitment to raising awareness of the importance of ethics, responsibility and sustainability in business through the integration of relevant modules into key programmes and by encouraging discussion and debate on the global challenges faced by the business world. Launched in 2012, our ‘Grand Challenges’ scheme is designed to engage students in exploring some of the significant ethical dilemmas facing business and society today.

Our comprehensive portfolio of rigorous and relevant degree and post-graduate programmes deliver outstanding employability and prepare students for careers in the challenging world of international business. Collaboration with professional institutions and corporate partners ensures appropriate accreditation and commercial relevance. We enhance student employability by focusing on both academic excellence and the development of managerial skills through international academic partnerships, industrial placements and the involvement of business practitioners—including many of our alumni—in both programme and extra-curricular activities.

We have a core range of eight undergraduate and 12 pre-experience Masters programmes focused on the fundamentals of management, economics, accounting and finance. The One Planet MBA and the MA in Leadership and Change, plus our five PhD programmes, complete our programme portfolio.

Our undergraduate programmes include a ‘With Industrial Experience (WIE)’ option to enhance employability and build students’ understanding of the international business environment. Students also benefit from international study opportunities with our network of over 50 partner institutions in 25 different countries.

By demonstrating that new programmes, innovative modes of delivery and collaboration with external partners can all be positive we have created an environment where innovation in programme design is welcomed.

18 University of Exeter Business School www.exeter.ac.uk/business-school 19

Building on our 25 year experience of delivering the MBA qualification and our insight into the changing world of business, in 2010 we developed the One Planet MBA in partnership with WWF International (Switzerland). This unique programme delivers the business knowledge that is a pre-requisite for senior managers, whilst advocating that commercial sustainability and responsible business practices become the norm for organisations worldwide.

Developed in collaboration with international business leaders, educators and students, the One Planet MBA is focused on the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for global business. Our aim is to show future managers that conserving resources is entirely compatible with winning and maintaining customer confidence and shareholder value. We are developing a new generation of business leaders who are one-step ahead of the competition, equipped to think strategically, innovate boldly and lead colleagues and companies through the complex and rapidly changing landscape of international business and enterprise.

We draw on the School’s extensive network of business leaders, entrepreneurs, consultants and leading academics as contributors to the One Planet MBA. Each provides unrivalled opportunities for collaboration and is a valued source of ideas, information and resources. Many support our students to undertake their One Planet MBA project, which provides a hugely valuable opportunity to engage with an external client and apply the knowledge and skills developed during the programme to a real world practical issue.

Our corporate partners are excited to be part of our innovative MBA programme, contributing to the development of future business leaders who recognise and embrace the challenges and opportunities inherent in the transition to more sustainable business practices.

“ Yui undertook a complex and critical project in partnership with Coca-Cola Enterprises during his MBA. His project looked at the quality of material supplied for recycling at our joint venture plastic reprocessing facility in Lincolnshire.

The project results were dynamic and meaningful, helping the business to develop its technical and purchasing strategy. Yui brought real subject matter expertise that encouraged us to find an appropriate permanent role for him at Coca-Cola Enterprises.”

Patrick McGuirk, Recycling Director, Coca-Cola Enterprises

Client: Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd

MBA Project: Solutions for Material Assessment of Incoming Feedstock at a PET Plastics Recycling Facility

One of the biggest challenges during the project was balancing complex and sensitive business information with the highly competitive conditions of the marketplace.

Yui presented the client with several options for process improvements and ECO Plastics proceeded with testing new technologies to improve the sorting process which, if fully implemented, would reduce costs and enable improved quality in the supply chain. His diligence and professionalism impressed Coca-Cola Enterprises and Yui is now working as their Sustainable Packaging Senior Manager.

YUICHIRO KAMIKAWA ONE PLANET MBA 2011–12

Selected to receive the One Planet MBA Coca-Cola Corporate Partnership Scholarship, Yuichiro negotiated with his sponsor to take on a consultancy project with Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd, an independent Coca-Cola bottler. CCE, as part of a joint venture with ECO Plastics, operate the largest plastic recycling facility in Western Europe and Yui’s brief was to work with ECO Plastics to improve their processes for assessing the quality of recycling material being delivered to the new plant.

Accurate assessment of input waste materials has a direct impact on the company’s yield and margins, so the project had very real implications. It gave Yui the opportunity to combine his expertise and experience in engineering with CCE’s commitment to recycling and sustainable packaging.

22 University of Exeter Business School www.exeter.ac.uk/business-school 23

The Business School is working in partnership with professional services firm KPMG and ICAS (Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland) to deliver a ground-breaking new undergraduate programme. The course gives exceptional students the opportunity to join one of the world’s top professional services firms where they will develop valuable skills, gain relevant work experience, network with senior managers and work towards gaining a professional qualification whilst earning a good salary – all at the same time as completing a BSc Accounting from one of the top business schools in the UK.

Students apply directly through KPMG for a place on the four-year BSc Accounting course and, if successful, immediately become paid employees of KPMG (who also meet their university costs). The programme is designed to allow students to alternate between university study and work experience in KPMG’s Audit practice, which means commercial experience and real responsibility right from the start. After completing their degree students can undertake two additional years of professional examinations, whilst remaining employees of KMPG, to complete chartered status through ICAS.

This unique programme enables students to underpin their theoretical knowledge with practical work experience throughout their time at university. They graduate with an exceptional foundation for a successful career and a firm basis for continuing professional development.

BUILD CAREERS

BSC ACCOUNTING

A BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP TO

RESEARCH WITH IMPACT

Research is also a critically important way of refreshing our programme content and promoting innovations in teaching and learning. Our students too are a key audience for our research – the impact of this is significant as we graduate around 1,700 students each year.

As well as championing individual research excellence, we are establishing significant areas of research strength for which the School can be recognised internationally. Current ‘research peaks’ include: Innovation and Service Research; Leadership; Tourism Management; Behaviour, Markets and Decision-Making and Public Economics, Trade and the Environment. Our doctoral programme is a vital and integrated part of our research activity and our diverse faculty enables the Business School to be represented on the international stage, influencing thought leadership at a global level by contributing to research projects and publishing their own work world-wide.

Our investment in our research activity contributes directly to our goal of becoming one of the best business schools in the world. In the most recent national research assessment almost two-thirds of our research was of world-leading or internationally excellent quality; 95% was considered to be of international standard. Our individual departments rank highly amongst comparable UK institutions: we are 2nd in Accounting and Finance, 12th in Economics and 16th in Management.

Our faculty already publish their research in the highest quality, internationally peer-reviewed academic journals. But increasingly we are extending the impact we have by looking beyond academia: in particular, helping businesses and government to improve their policies and practices based on rigorous research conducted in collaboration with our faculty. For example, the EXPRESS network (the Exeter Entrepreneurship Seminar Series) has held events in Sweden, Germany, Holland, Finland and the UK to promote dialogue between international academics and UK and EU government policy-makers.

Our aim is to create distinctive, high-calibre research that has world class impact. By investing in our staff and their research activity we will continue to create and disseminate knowledge that addresses the global challenges confronting business and society.

Steve McCorriston explains, “The overall objective of the project is to develop a greater understanding of pricing issues in EU food markets, to understand the links between world market prices and retail prices for food in supermarkets, and why these factors may cause the pricing of food throughout the EU to be as varied as it has been recently. This research is important as it demonstrates our willingness to engage with international partners in a project which will have a major impact on both policymakers and the private sector.”

This significant project builds on the Business School’s existing research on food price inflation. Since 2011 the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has used a bespoke forecasting tool designed by the University of Exeter Business School to predict the impact of commodity shocks on UK food prices. This tool has enabled in-house analysis of food pricing. It provides crucial data to government ministers, senior civil servants and institutions such as the Office for Budget Responsibility and the Bank of England.

Professor Steve McCorriston from the University of Exeter Business School is leading a C1million research project on factors determining food prices throughout the EU. The research consortium involves 13 universities across 10 countries.

Recent significant increases in the world prices of many food and energy commodities has ignited considerable concern among governments globally and other stakeholder groups concerned with the impact of high world market prices on domestic food price inflation. The obvious concern is the impact on households, particularly in countries where expenditure on food accounts for a relatively high share of total consumer expenditure, and more broadly, the issues for European monetary authorities with high food prices currently fuelling domestic inflation throughout the EU.

“ The overall objective of the project is to develop a greater understanding of pricing issues in EU food markets, to understand the links between world market prices and retail prices for food in supermarkets and why these factors may cause the pricing of food throughout the EU to be as varied as it has been recently.”

STRATEGIC CORPORATE PARTNERS

34 University of Exeter Business School www.exeter.ac.uk/business-school 35

Alumni are central to supporting our objective of continually increasing career opportunities for students. This includes providing valuable work experience opportunities, bringing real-life business perspectives into the classroom by volunteering as guest speakers and lecturers, and contributing careers-related expertise through mentoring, careers advice and mock interviews. The School’s Advisory Board benefits from alumni expertise and the insight alumni bring to curriculum development and programme reviews is extremely beneficial to both staff and students. As we forge ahead with building sustainable and effective corporate partnerships, our alumni act as useful ‘entry-points’ into their own organisations and into others with whom they collaborate. Our relationships with Syngenta and Afren Plc, both of whom contribute generous scholarships for our MBA students, were initiated by alumni working within these companies.

Over the past three years, 347 of our alumni have made donations to the School or University, with £2.6m contributed to the School’s ‘Triple Match Challenge’ campaign in 2010/11, and 235 alumni have volunteered their services to our students. We currently have offers of volunteer time from 898 alumni. Their commitment to supporting our students has been recognized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) who awarded Exeter a Gold rating in its prestigious Circle of Excellence Awards. We are the only UK university to receive this award in the Alumni Relations Programme category.

Our aim is to continue building our alumni network. We recognise that having strong and sustainable connections between our faculty, our alumni and our students is fundamental to our success, particularly where those relationships support our international ambitions and enhance the employability of our students.

ALUMNI IN FOCUS

38 University of Exeter Business School www.exeter.ac.uk/business-school 39

The Business School takes its role as a ‘good citizen’ very seriously. This is reflected in our dedication to upholding the highest levels of integrity and the ethical pursuit of knowledge and in our core values of respect, inclusivity, sustainability and partnership. We are a signatory to the key themes of PRME (Principles for Responsible Management Education) – global social responsibility, sustainable value, inclusive educational frameworks, advanced research and wide-ranging dialogue, amongst others – and these are core to everything we do. We are also an active member of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD), the European Academy of Business in Society (EABIS) and the Globally Responsible Leadership Initiative (GRLI).

Our students are encouraged to understand the challenges confronting business and society and the importance of ethical, responsible and sustainable behaviour. These values are, in part, developed through opportunities to engage with the local community

through consultancy and student projects and via the activities of pioneering student clubs and societies. The University has one of the highest levels of student participation in extra-curricular activities in the UK and Business School students contribute significantly to this. In addition, thousands of hours are given voluntarily by our alumni and we actively encourage all our staff to volunteer to support the community and the profession.

We focus our research on critical issues which have a beneficial impact on business and society. Addressing the challenges of sustainability involves transforming the ways we work, live and compete; research underway in the School is showing how this transformation can happen and what it will look like. As part of our commitment to turn knowledge into practice, our researchers work closely with local, national and international businesses to help them adopt sustainable practices. Sustainability is clearly at the heart of our innovative One Planet MBA and also embedded into many of our other programmes.

OURCOMMITMENT

TO THE COMMUNITY

We are committed to the principles and practice of sustainability and corporate social responsibility through our research and teaching, our admissions policies, how we interact with our environment and our communities and the way we manage our activities, buildings and campus.

40 University of Exeter Business School www.exeter.ac.uk/business-school 41

STUDENTS AS CHANGE AGENTS

This project has gained national and international recognition for its contribution to developing well-rounded, culturally aware graduates who are highly employable. Students and staff work collaboratively to explore how teaching and learning could be improved. Projects have focussed on the key areas of enhancing employability, improving assessment and feedback, using technology for student engagement, internationalism, sustainability and peer mentoring.

The project also encourages collaboration in the design and development of the University campus and support from Santander in 2011–12 enabled a number of sustainability-focussed student co-ordinated projects such as a programme of biodiversity monitoring and a new sculpture for the University’s Forum building made from waste generated by the building project.

CLEAR ABOUT CARBON

The first initiative of its kind nationally, Clear About Carbon is a European Social Fund-Convergence project researching and developing low carbon literacy and management skills in public and private sector procurement and supply chains.

An inter-disciplinary team from the Business School, led by Professor Annie Pye, are working in partnership with Cornwall Council, Duchy College and the Eden Project to support the Cornish business community to engage with, and support, the low carbon agenda. Using an innovative methodological approach, the Clear About Carbon project has had widespread, significant impact on practice in public and private sector organisations’ procurement and supply chains in Cornwall.

ENTREPRENEURS IN ACTION (ENACTUS) and STUDENTS IN FREE ENTERPRISE (SIFE)

These two student-led societies enable students to gain real experience of being socially responsible project leaders whilst also changing lives in targeted communities. Recent projects have included a visit to India to help train young people in enterprise skills; delivering workshops on budgeting, tenancy, CV and interview skills for ex-offenders and the homeless and bringing Skype and email into residential homes to help unite the elderly with their relatives.

In 2012, Exeter’s SIFE society beat 48 university teams in the national SIFE awards to win the Rookie Champion Cup and to be joint runner-up in the Wilkinson Sustainable Entrepreneurship Award.

NET IMPACT CHAPTERBusiness School undergraduates have established a Chapter for Net Impact. Net Impact is a community of more than 30,000 change makers who put their business skills to work to bring about positive social or environmental change.

In 2012 the Business School was the first and only UK Chapter of the Net Impact global organisation to be awarded silver status in their first year of operation and was one of only five undergraduate chapters in 2012 to be given this status across the world.

ONE PLANET MBA ‘WHITE SPACE’ PROJECT

To help develop ‘leadership in action’ our MBA students undertake a community project as part of their course. In 2011/12 students worked with Shilhay, a homeless charity in Exeter, to refurbish rooms at a hostel and extend the charity’s capacity for new residents. This year they are organizing a Water Security Challenge – inviting MBA students from other European Business Schools to compete in a challenge to design collaborative solutions to water problems in a specific country context.

The Challenge will bring water researchers, regulators, suppliers, charities and major industry water users to the table to debate the impact of water shortages on stakeholder communities.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Community engagement is fundamental to the life of the School. We translate our commitment into action through staff outreach, volunteering, service to the profession and operations, but crucially we support others to take action through our teaching and research, our partnerships and by encouraging our students and alumni to engage. It brings huge benefits to both the community and to the personal development of our students and staff.
