John and his family’s dedication tothe McLeod Health Foundation iswidespread. They have supported theMcLeod Children’s Hospital, McLeodHospice, the McLeod Center for Cancer Treatment and Research as wellas the Guest House at McLeod. Inaddition, John and his wife, Sandy, have made an estate gift to the McLeodFoundation and are members of the Dr. F. H. McLeod Legacy Society.
John is also a graduate of theMcLeod Fellows program and amember of the Foundation’s McLeodMen’s group.
A lifelong resident of Dillon County,John is grateful to McLeod Health andthe Foundation for supporting hiscommunity. “I served on the St. Eugene
Hospital Advisory Board for a numberof years, including the period when thehospital became part of the McLeodfamily,” said John. “That merger provedto be a real blessing for healthcare in ourrural community. If the hospital had notjoined McLeod in 1998, I believe wewould be like many other rural areastoday that no longer have a hospital.”
A board member for 11 years, Johnhas also observed the growth of McLeod Health to Horry, Chesterfield andClarendon counties. “As other hospitalsare leaving the rural communities,McLeod continues to invest,” he said.
In addition to being a donor andadvocate for McLeod, John has been arecipient of the excellent healthcareMcLeod provides. “From sports injuries
to my cancer diagnosis, I have receivedthe same level of high quality care thatthe larger and more well-knownhospitals around the nation may offer,”said John. “McLeod provides state-of-the-art medicine to patients in ourregion with excellent outcomes and first class compassionate care.”
John and Sandy’s children, JillBraddy McLeod and David Braddy, areboth physicians. “Thanks to funding bythe McLeod Foundation, our childrenhad the opportunity to come to McLeod Regional Medical Center andspend the summer between their firstand second years of medical schoolunder the direction of great physiciansand teachers. This experience madethem both better physicians and people.”
John Braddy’s connection with McLeod Health began nearly 64 years ago, when he was born at St. Eugene
Hospital in Dillon -- now McLeod Health Dillon. Today, he represents Dillon County on the McLeod Health
Board of Trustees, and is currently finishing the first year of a three-year term as Chairman of the Board.
John added, “Each of us has animportant connection to the future ofthis organization. It is our dream thatthe work performed to care for those in need in our region will grow andconstantly improve. My hope is that theorganization will not only survive thechanges in healthcare to come, butthrive because of its mission andoutstanding service.”
John recently addressed fellow andnew members of the Dr. F. H. McLeodLegacy Society during the annual dinnerheld each January. He closed with aquote from Mark Batterson’s book“Chase the Lion.” The book’s subtitle is “If your dream does not scare you, itis too small. We all need to believe in God size dreams.”

more meaningful to her in 2012, whenshe was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’sLymphoma.
“Marilyn believed in McLeod, themission, the culture and compassion andmost of all the McLeod physicians andstaff,” said Asa. “During her battle withcancer, our out-of-state relativesquestioned why we chose localtreatment. We tried to explain to ourfamily members the trust and faith wehad in all of Marilyn’s physicians. But,people unfamiliar with the medicalcommunity in Florence just could notunderstand. To satisfy our relatives andto confirm our own opinions, weconsulted with Marilyn’s oncologist Dr. Michael Pavy about going to M.D. Anderson hospital in Houston fora second opinion.”
Dr. Pavy understood what theGodbolds were going through and madethe necessary appointments for them inTexas. He also forwarded all of Marilyn’srecords for their review to minimize anyduplication of efforts and costs.
“When we met with the oncologist in Texas, he walked into the room andtold us that he agreed 100 percent with Dr. Pavy’s diagnosis and with hisproposed treatment protocol. He was a brilliant doctor who explained to usthat we were indeed receiving the bestmedical advice and care available in thecountry right here in Florence atMcLeod. He told us as we left that if we,or Dr. Pavy, ever thought we neededhim, he was available. However, he did
not expect that he would have to see usagain -- we were in good hands.”
Marilyn never doubted that she wasgetting the best medical care available, according to Asa. “When she wasdiagnosed with cancer, we knew we hada long road ahead. Marilyn decided toapproach this journey with the samedetermination and positive attitude asshe did with everything in life.”
While receiving treatment for cancer,Marilyn continued to work and giveback, serving as one of the first membersof the HOPE (Helping Oncology PatientsEveryday) Fund Advisory Committee.Marilyn and Asa also annually supportedthe McLeod Foundation through theChef & Child Dinner and Auction for theMcLeod Children’s Hospital as well as
An Evening of Hope, the annual cancerbenefit for the McLeod Cancer Center.
Two years after retiring fromMcLeod, Marilyn passed away inSeptember of 2017, battling cancer forfive years. Knowing how much theHOPE Fund and the McLeod CancerCenter staff meant to Marilyn, Asa choseto designate Marilyn’s legacy estate giftto the HOPE Fund. In honor ofMarilyn’s estate gift, the McLeod HealthFoundation has dedicated the fountainin the McLeod Center for Intensive Caregarden in her memory.
Asa added, “Marilyn left the legacy ofa giving spirit with not only our childrenand grandchildren but also with ourfriends, community members and thestaff and volunteers of McLeod.”
During Marilyn’s tenure, the McLeodVolunteer Auxiliary contributed $2.4million to the McLeod Foundation from 1990 to 2015. Marilyn saw thevolunteers’ generosity to the Foundationas an extension of their efforts to serveothers. The volunteers gave back to theFoundation to help support such areasas the McLeod Children’s Hospital, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the McLeod Center for CancerTreatment and Research, the McLeodHospice House, the McLeod MobileMammography Unit and the GuestHouse at McLeod. They also establishedscholarships to aid local students seeking careers in health care.
“Marilyn cared deeply for McLeod Health,” said her husband, Asa.“From Bruce Barragan, who originallyhired her, to Rob Colones who followedin Bruce’s footsteps, and Marie Saleebywho guided and supported her. Marilyncherished McLeod. She also loved everyvolunteer who ever walked through thedoor of McLeod, including Arline Aiken, her ‘right hand’ for 28 years, and the staffof the McLeod Gift Shops who werewith her for many years.”

A Little Life, A Tremendous ImpactOne year after beginning fertility treatments, Preston and Abigayle Shuey of New Zion, South Carolina, were
overjoyed to learn that they were expecting twins. In August 2014, they welcomed their son, Hudson and
daughter, Hadley.
On November 8, 2017, Preston and AbigayleShuey, along with their children, Hadley andHolden, presented six mamaRoo® infant seats tothe McLeod Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)in memory of their son, Hudson, who passedaway in November 2014 at three months old. These infant seats will benefit NICU patientssuffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome.
2017 McLEOD FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT 9
Due to low blood sugar levels,Hudson received care in the McLeodNeonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)for a brief time. After his dischargefrom the NICU, Hudson roomed inwith Abigayle while doctors continuedto monitor his levels.
Abigayle, Hudson, and Hadley weresoon released from the hospital, andthe family of four enjoyed everymoment of their new adventure --until the unthinkable happened.
In November 2014, Preston andAbigayle were devastated at the suddenpassing of Hudson at only threemonths old.
“Paula Boyd, Hudson’s NICU nurse, reached out to me to offer condolencesshortly after we lost Hudson,” recallsAbigayle. “It meant the world to us thatshe thought enough of our son to notonly still remember him three monthslater but to think enough of him toreach out to us during such adevastating time.”
In the days ahead, the Shueysexperienced an outpouring of love andsupport from family and friends.
“As we looked at everyone whoattended Hudson’s funeral, Preston andI realized that he had already made ahuge impact on the people in his life,”says Abigayle. “As time passed, however,my husband and I wanted to dosomething in his honor so that his lifewould not be forgotten.”
In 2017, Preston and Abigayledecided to donate to the McLeod
NICU since both Hudson and theiryoungest son, Holden, spent time there.Although unsure of what to donate, theShueys wanted to provide somethingthat Hudson also benefited from.Preston reached out to the McLeodFoundation and learned that the NICU was in need of mamaRoos®, a special infant seat that mimics thenatural motions parents use to soothe their babies.
“This was perfectbecause we had amamaRoo® with the twins, and it was Hudson’s favoriteplace to be,” says Abigayle.
The Shueys then learnedthat the NICU needed sixmamaRoos®. They did not knowif they could afford to provide all ofthem, but due to the overwhelmingsupport of friends and family, theShueys were able to purchase all sixmamaRoos® as well as inserts andcovers for each one.
On November 8, 2017, Preston andAbigayle, along with three-year-oldHadley and one-year-old Holden, presented the donation to the McLeodNICU in honor of Hudson. EachmamaRoo® bears a plaque withHudson’s name.
The infant seats will be used withNICU patients suffering from NeonatalAbstinence Syndrome, a conditioncaused by an infant’s exposure to drugsin the womb. Infants often go throughwithdrawals after birth and require a
quiet, calm environment. The soothingmotions of the mamaRoo® will greatlybenefit babies suffering from thiscondition while they undergotreatment.
“I believe if Hudson had grown up,he would be the one to help others,”says Abigayle. “He actually is part of thereason Hadley continued to grow
in utero because he helped her get thenutrients she could not get on her owndue to the way he was positioned.
“Though his life was short, Hudsonmade an incredible impact on everyonearound him, and Preston and I feelblessed to make this donation in hismemory so that he will never beforgotten.”
The Shueys gather for a family photo as they donate infant seats to theMcLeod NICU in memory of their son, Hudson.

Dr. Vera Hyman established ascholarship to assist McLeodMedical Technology students.
While attending the University ofSouth Carolina, Dr. Hyman realized thatscience came easily to her and so shechose to major in biology and declaredherself pre-medicine. At a time whenfew women considered this career path, Dr. Hyman’s father encouraged her tofollow her dreams. However, it was inthe 1950s and when she married the latePeter Hyman and he wanted to open hislegal practice in Florence, she put herdream of becoming a physician on hold.
Peter supported his wife’s wish towork in the medical field so he enrolled
her in the Medical Technology programat McLeod. Medical Technologists directlaboratory analysis for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Lab tests are performed on blood, body fluids, and tissue using complex preciseinstrumentation. The MedicalTechnologist then provides thephysician with accurate, reliable andrapid results to assist them in makingdecisions about the patient’s medicalcare.
Through this program, Dr. Hymanwas able get a closer look at the medical
profession which inspired her evenmore to become a physician. Afterhaving three children in four years andwith Peter’s encouragement, Dr. Hymanapplied and was accepted to the MedicalCollege of South Carolina. She recallsthat there were only two women in herclass and she was the only one tograduate.
Dr. Hyman went on to complete herresidency at Massachusetts General inBoston before returning to Florence topractice with Pee Dee Pathology in 1973.
During her career at McLeod in theearly 1970s, the hospital, like manyothers across the country, oftenexperienced difficulty finding qualifiedMedical Technologists. Dr. Louis Wright,Director of McLeod Laboratory Services, asked Dr. Hyman to re-establish theMcLeod School of Medical Technologyin 1977. Dr. Hyman agreed and served as the school’s Medical Director until her retirement in 2004.
“Dr. Hyman always had a vision ofwhat a professional MedicalTechnologist should be,” said VickiAnderson, the former Program Directorfor the McLeod School of MedicalTechnology. “One of her greatest assetswas her ability to evaluate situations andpeople. She always set high goals for thestudents and fully expected them toachieve those standards. Dr. Hyman alsoinspired us to try new things, to change, and to work hard to reach the potentialshe saw in each of her students.”
To ensure the future of the program,Dr. Hyman recently established ascholarship to assist McLeod MedicalTechnology students. “This is how Ibegan my medical career which hasgiven me great satisfaction andrewards.”
Since 1977, 187 graduates have beeninspired by Dr. Hyman’s legacy and nowmany more will have the opportunity tofulfill their dreams.

Providing for the Future Dr. Vera Hyman, a retired Pathologist with Pee Dee Pathology, has set an example locally for women in the

Marvin’s connection to children’shealthcare began long before hisassociation with the McLeod HealthFoundation. Inspired by his father Dr. James Owen, a McLeod OB-GYN,Marvin planned on becoming aphysician himself -- until his freshmanyear of college when he shadowed hisfather and observed him in action.
“I watched my father perform one C-section operation and quicklychanged my major to ComputerScience,” Marvin reflected with a laugh.
Fortunately, this experience did notextinguish Marvin’s passion forchildren’s healthcare. Today, Marvinworks tirelessly to ensure that hiscommunity has the best children’shospital possible.
“As an employer of 400 people, I seetheir children and watch childhoodmedical issues come up,” explainedMarvin. “I also have four children andsix grandchildren of my own.”
One of these grandchildren, Jack, hadto undergo open heart surgery at just
three months of age. “I learned firsthand how important
Children’s Hospitals are,” said Marvin.“Jack is now eight-years-old, and doinggreat.”
One of Marvin’s main contributionsto the Children’s Hospital is his yearlyinvolvement in the McLeod Children’sHospital Golf Classic. Marvin’s company,ACS Technologies, has been a sponsor ofthe tournament for five years, andMarvin serves on the tournament’splanning committee, working to bring inadditional sponsors from the businesscommunity.
“The Golf Classic is the premier golfouting in Florence, and all funds raisedgo directly to helping McLeod Children’sHospital,” Marvin explained. “It’s arewarding effort.”
The most recent Foundation-fundedaddition to the Children’s Hospital is anew treatment room in the PediatricIntensive Care Unit (PICU). Having atreatment room in the PICU -- wherechildren can have blood drawn, IVs
inserted, and other special proceduresadministered -- allows the patient roomto feel safe, eliminating fears andminimizing pain. The new treatmentroom features a child-friendly treatmenttable, vein finders (for accurate, one-time needle sticks), and fun, engagingdecorations.
As a donor and supporter of theMcLeod Foundation, Marvin’s hardwork and generosity continues to helpMcLeod Children’s Hospital add newtechnology and equipment to providethe best healthcare possible for theregion.
Marvin Owen, President of ACS Technologies in Florence, and his wife Beth Ann are longtime donors of the

Grateful for the gift of time, Michael andBrandi Rogers, along with their son, Lawson, and daughter, Haigan, spent preciousmoments with Emersyn following her birthon August 23, 2017.
THE GIFTGiving
Just eleven weeks into thepregnancy, however, Michael andBrandi’s joy quickly turned to concernwhen an ultrasound revealed fluid on their unborn daughter’s brain.Further testing led to a devastatingdiagnosis -- anencephaly, a rare andfatal birth defect which prevents aninfant’s brain and skull fromdeveloping properly.
Anencephaly affects approximatelyone in 1,000 pregnancies, and theNational Institutes of Health estimatesthat one in 10,000 infants in theUnited States is born with thecondition. Almost all infants withanencephaly pass away before birth orshortly after.
Heartbroken over their daughter’sdiagnosis, Michael and Brandiresearched the condition to determinetheir options. Brandi also joined socialmedia groups formed by mothers ofinfants with anencephaly to learnabout their birthing experiences.Ultimately, she and Michael decidedto carry their daughter to full term.
Several weeks later, a mutual friendintroduced Brandi to Teresa Bennett-Yates and Robin Hicken, mothers ofstillborn infants who founded Meaganand Austin’s Continued Journey, a
non-profit dedicated to providingCuddleCots to hospitals in SouthCarolina and North Carolina.
Significantly impacting the infantbereavement process, the CuddleCot™system cools and preserves a baby’sbody, allowing families precious timeto bond and make memories. Usedmost often with a Moses basket, thesystem can also be used in a bassinet, crib, or bed.
“In most cases involving infantloss, grieving parents have onlyminutes with their baby,” says Brandi.“However, the CuddleCot allowsparents and family members to haveas much time with their baby aspossible.”
On August 23, 2017, at 9:52 a.m.,Brandi gave birth to Emersyn LynnRogers.
“The nurse immediately placedEmersyn on my chest, where shestayed for the next 71 minutes of herlife,” recalls Brandi. “She passed awayat 11:03 a.m.”
With the help of the CuddleCotsystem, the Rogers family were able toextend their intimate and precioustime with Emersyn for a little longerafter she passed.
“We snuggled with her, slept with
her, hugged her, memorizedevery beautiful feature -- thingsmost of us do not think we needuntil we realize this is the only timewe will ever have with our baby,”says Brandi. “We captured familyphotos and videos that we willcherish forever, and our greatest joy inthis experience was being able to seeour daughter live.”
Michael and Brandi wanted to givethis gift of time to other parents, sothey partnered with the founders ofMeagan and Austin’s ContinuedJourney. Together, they raised morethan $6,000 to purchase twoCuddleCot™ systems for McLeodRegional Medical Center in memoryof Emersyn, which they presented tothe organization on November 17,2017.
“We could not imagine ourbirthing experience without theCuddleCot, and we want to ensurethat other grieving parents have theopportunity to make forevermemories with their baby,” addedBrandi.
Ecstatic to learn that they were expecting their third child, Michael
and Brandi Rogers of Effingham, South Carolina, began to prepare for
life as a family of five.
